You're welcome my friends! It just breaks my heart into teeny-weeny pieces to see these precious meerkats turned into pets!! It's like that blankety-blank gas station owner who stole two tiger cubs from the jungle forcing them to live in his gas station. One of them died and now there's only Tony who lives behind steal bars and has a concrete floor and he has to inhale gas fumes. And on top of that, people throw things at him!!!!!

I thought it was forbidden to keep meerkats as pets. It's really sad....meerkats belong to the Kalahari and live free in their groups, not in cages!!

Noted, signed. I'm also a Meerkat lover, rescue some of them myself from abuse by people. And I am strongly advice people not to keep Meerkat's for pets, they must stay in the wild.

Thx. BarboKat, Signed. A few years back Animal Planet ran a weekly series for four years of a family of Meerkats. I loved that show just as Actor Denis Leary (dreamy) does. The Whiskers Clan and Flower was the Matriarch . I cried when she died but I cried more for Mozart who had a tough life till the end. I recorded it so I can show it to my grandchildren some day.

The pledge says to comparethemeerkat.com ti support CAPS' campaign and discourage people from buying meerkats as pets. I went to comparethemeerkat.com, but I could not find any way to send then a message. I could nto even figure out exactly what the site is all about. Does anyone know what to do? Thanks BarbCat

How is it possible to import meerkats in the US ? Is there no law avoiding import of wild animals ? Strongly forbidden in Europe, only possible if the species is in danger of extinction and only for specialized governmental institutions. Endangered species are kept for reproduction and then, when possible, re-installed in their environment.
Of course I signed ! This gives me the creeps !

signed thank you. Meerkats should never be kept as pets. They are adorable. I was so ticked at Animal Planet when they , ahem, "allowed" a snake to in the den and kill Flower. To me that was a set up and really rude. I have not watched it since. I have had ferrets, but I let mine out of their cage for most of the time. I cannot stand having them where I cannot interact totally. I love holding my animals and smooching on them. I go through a lot of lip balm.

Though it also helped to know the species better, I fear the Meerkats Clan Saga (dunno how its called in English, it's aired in French here of course) is doing more harm than good, actually... because it might give some bad ideas to some people such as "oh, meerkats are so adorable, I want to adopt ONE".
But ONE SINGLE meerkat, even if not kept locked in a cage as shown in the article (!!! total shame) shall never make a HAPPY meerkat. The welfare of the species, and it's perfectly clear in the program, lies in its ability to build strong groups of families and relatives, exactly like wolf packs.

Leave them alone, for God's sake!!! (huh, what did I just say? Well, I don't mean "alone" in the "lonely" sense - just in the "no human intervention" sense of course.....)

I loved that show ( Meercat Manor ) too , Vinnie M. It was sad alot of the time though , because one day a baby meercat might be lost , alone at night , and the next day one gets a bad injury somehow , etc. etc. ! Very dramatic show !! :) But that's where they belong , out in the desert. Not in a wire cage or box !!
Signed pledge and noted .. TY BarbCat

As a person who adores meerkats and faithfully watched "Meerkat Manor," I know very well how these little critters love to run, and dig, and hunt, and sun, and play, and groom, and fight to defend their turf which ranges over quite a bit of territory. To see them languishing in CAGES like this is a terrible affront. I can only imagine how terrible they must feel. FIE on anyone who would cage a Meercat!!!!!!!

Yes, Catherine, I think meerkats probably are one of the planets most charming animals! Way too cute in the environment they were meant to live.

Meerkats, DO NOT belong in cages & most definitely, DO NOT DESERVE to have some selfish, ignorant human, controlling, suppressing & restricting, their every movement, when & what they can eat, when & if, they can come out of their cages etc.
Wild, exotic Animals, need to be left to live their lives in the wild, as they were designed to do, with NO interference from pig headed, show off humans!!!
I propose a test, to see if some humans will make good pet owners of Animals from the wild.
If they can last 6 mths. with a Badger, a grizzly, or a Tasmanian Devil, then they pass the test !
If, by some miracle, a human is still alive after the 6 mth period, I also strongly recommend, some education classes about Animal Health & welfare.

Petitions signed. What's wrong with these people. Usually those that want exotic pets do so because they think it will give them status, but it doesn't. You earn respect from others. Having an exotic animal or a fancy car doesn't buy you respect.
