Baby P was 17 months old when he was beaten to death by his mother, her boyfriend, and their lodger. He had already suffered at their hands, being treated worse than an animal.

Hi dear Barb, I signed this earlier today along with a very strong comment. I couldn't understand why this child has been diagnosed multiple times with bruising and other obvious signs of torture, yet nobody reported these abusive people to the authorities. There should have been some investigation at least! This was entirely preventable!!

Thanks Barb, very sad and frustrating.

The apathy we feel for the civilians killed in our wars of imperialism -- like a cancer -- spreads to our disregard for human life in our homes.

Revive humanity! Care about individuals!

While I am NOT an Obama advocate (which is not also to say I am against him), I value the words of this message.

Our children are our hope. Teach them tolerance, and revere their memories. We are the keepers of their trust.

Politics have become a separate entity from empathy.

(And that is sad.)

We've become nations of advantage, imperialism, subject of terrorist fear and retaliation -- and we know little of the truth behind the propaganda.

Our media does not carry the message of those who truly care.

WE must be the courier.

Signed dearest Barb! Made me think about what happened here in San Diego Last week...a Mother was Drunk and her baby was mauled by their dog while she slept...This was a Rescue Dog that had been thrown from the car and after she drank 5 cocktails she passed out...WT???????????????GRRRRRRRRRRRR

HUMAN Mothers (SOME) Uncarring, Useless, and just want something they can either call their own, or take care of them...Thus, Children having Children and so many deaths!

Sorry, Cranky and when I signed didn't get the number! FUSSY! So needless, a Animal would of taken better care of this child than this POS!

If you notice signs of abuse in your neighborhood or community, report to child welfare authorities at once.

OMG, this is hideous. If that baby had been admitted to hospital for previous injuries the medical staff is responsible to report this. Then the CPS is dutibound to investigate. The kind of injuries sustained by this baby clearly shows abuse. So whoever left this baby with these monsters is equaslly guilty. I hope all go to jail. I know they will go to hell. Signed, and thanks everyone for sticking up for this childs life, it should not be swept under the carpet, even the child welfare agencies involved need to be investigated. I always wonder why when I watch the news that someone gets away with killing a baby yet if they rob a bank and take 'money' then they go to jail for 25 years, when will the justice system get this right, a baby is a precious living being, money cannot be valued over life, especially a vulnerable dependent little fellow like this bub.

This poor child didn't have a chance! His mother abused him and allowed her boyfriend and lodger to abuse him as well. The doctors and nurses who treated him either didn't report his suspicious injuries, or their reports received no follow-up. Social services failed him completely. That poor child never experienced love, happiness, trust or freedom from pain during his very short life. I hope his mother rots in hell, along with her boyfriend and lodger. And I hope that the medical professionals who treated him, and the social workers who didn't remove him from his abusive surroundings, feel the guilt of the part they played in ending this innocent child's life for their remainder of their own.

Rest in peace, Baby P!

What a crying shame for this beautiful little Angel. May he RIP now. I'm w/Jim and many others, mother, boyfriend, social services, etc., should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law, and serve a long prison sentence. What happened in San Diego with a drunk mother, Marilynn's comment, is also sad. When it involves a baby, or child, I sometimes think that some people should be childless for their lifetime. Thanks, Barb for this post. Look up in the sky, a new star has been born, in the heavens above. xox

Noted and signed. Though what the mother and the company did is very horrifying, sadly it is not an isolated or rare case and similar incidents (abuses and eventual deaths of small children by their own parent/s) have been reported in Japan, too.
Most of those who commented above might not believe or agree, but often even such mothers desperately need help themselves.
As someone who works at a children's day care facility, I remind myself again to be alart, and watch carefully and be supportive to not only the children but their mothers.

Let me start first by saying that the eradication of child abuse (in all its forms) has been a chief cause of mine for more than 40 years.  It started as a child, but became overwhelming as an adult after I read this book:  Somewhere a Child is Crying.
I volunteered as a Child Abuse Counselor, and completed substantive training; then was released into the field as a counselor.  Naoko, I understand your concerns.  I, initially, had little respect for the mental problems of abusers -- and wanted only to deal with the children -- but, as fate would have it, my first assignment was dealing with an abusive (neglectful) parent.
There are different forms of abuse:  psychological, physical and neglect.  But ALL are damaging.  (That realty was driven home when I was forced to counsel a drug-addicted neglectful parent -- and direct my attentions to protecting the children, while educating the mother about healthy "coping" skills.)
For those who wish to know (and, in many ways, be haunted by) the true horrors experienced by this innocent child, this is the site I visited after reading this article:
NHS Doctor, Sabah al-Zayyat, failed to identify Baby P's broken back and ribs
I was grief-stricken by the lack of public notice to this barbarity!
Please join me in devoting some time to making the public aware of these atrocities!

Gillian M (218)

I am appalled that the doctors failed to pick up the abuse that Peter suffered but the NHS is massively overworked and, I am sure, that the odd mishap slips through. However, this was not an odd mishap and should have been seen and reported. Again, social services is stretched to the limit and a child on the At Risk register is supposed to be monitored by a senior social worker and the cases regularly discussed with supervisors.

Again, social services in the area that Peter lived in were stretched but there are provisions in place to ensure that no child suffered which failed. Because of the distress of the public over the death of this cute little boy, there were two public investigations. The Head of Social Services was dismissed but she went to tribunal (a court for unfair dismissals) and was found to be unfairly dismissed. I do not remember what happened to the rest of the people involved as this was over 4 years ago.

I do voluntary work with domestic violence victims from all backgrounds and see the result on the children too. There is no excuse for any of it, an abusive man is just that, abusive regardless of race, creed or colour (in the West they are predominantly white men but there are some in same sex relationships and there are some women against their partner). Counsellors and psychiatrists often enable them by falling for all kinds of myths that have been found to be untrue. The chances are that both the boy friend and the mother abused animals before, which is why it is so important that animal abuse should be treated seriously.

The worst part is that people turn a blind eye to child abuse where they would protest at seeing someone hitting an animal. As with abusive husbands, people do not want to believe that that person would abuse a child. I reported my neighbour for child abuse (I wasn't sure until the son came to me for help and was told that I was a nosey neighbour by an independent charity that I asked for help). Social Services investigated and found that the school and doctor were concerned and monitored the family until the younger child was 16. The other neighbours blamed me and refused to accept that there was a problem even though the kids assaulted theirs. People want to be blind. Still, I would do it again to ensure the welfare of the children.

I try to speak out against child abuse, slavery, war crimes (using children as suicide bombers and training them for war) and forced marriage. I talk to many people and so many are not aware of what is happening in other countries let alone their own. I wish more countries would join the international pact on child kidnapping, it would help so many parents and children.

WTF!!!!!!!!!! Do you mean to tell me that this baby had been taken to the dr. all of these times, and no one thought that there was something wierd about this? What is wrong with these people?!?! An ,as for the sentence,I have heared of people getting more time for damaging property than what they got for killing a baby.I signed the petition.I know that it won't bring him back, but I hope it is successful in getting justice done to these animals, and that a stiff sentence will be a deterrant from anymore children having to go through this.

Those that abused this child, and those that abuse and neglect other children should be dealt with appropriately, and not allowed contact with any children unless they are assessed as no longer being a risk.

But it is all too easy to condemn Social Services, social workers etc. before we know the full facts, espeically in this time of cuts in the system which mean that there are no longer all the support networks in place that were there a few years ago, and social workers have ever-increasing case-loads.

If people in these jobs have too much work, mistakes are bound to happen and, sadly, tragedies will occur. Condemning people whose jobs are stressful and difficult enough already won't help, especially when we don't know what constraints and difficulties they work under. But mistakes must be learnt from.

Lindsay, as you are probably aware, Tower Hamlets is an inner city area with a greater work load than some other areas. However, there had been deaths previously and Baby P should have been protected by the learning from those cases. I am aware of how overworked social workers can be but that does not excuse them from criminal neglect where a baby is in danger.

NHS doctors are trained to spot child abuse although they are overworked in such areas, it does not stop minimum criteria for care. An At Risk child is supposed to be reviewed differently and, if necessary, the police can be called for an emergency removal. None of this happened and this poor little baby was murdered.

As you may gather, I have spent time in social services and in charities that work with social services. Baby P's death was a travesty of the care and support that should have been provided. The police, the doctor, any day care, community nurse, health visitor etc would have been made aware of the situation and all should be involved. I do not understand why Baby P was not put into care, there was sufficient reason to do so.

I am also unhappy with the sentence and the fact that the perpetrators can be allowed out of prison so early (costs). I believe that the mother & boyfriend should have served MINIMUM sentences of 10 & 5 years respectively.

Apportioning blame will not bring Baby P back nor any other child but it MUST ensure that this does not happen again regardless of how busy anyone is.
