They may just be chickens, but they mean a whole lot to 3-year-old J.J. The DeBary, Florida preschooler has autism, and his pediatrician recommended that his family adopt a pet to help. Research suggests that having a pet can help kids with autism to

Please go to change.org to sign the petition. They also created a website to educate others on their fight against the council and a a Facebook group called "SAVE JJ HART'S "Ducks" to gain support and petition the ruling.

I'm glad this got posted, I saw it in the AOL message board this morning. Definitely signed! A few chickens do not make that much noise and they do not turn it into a farm. I've had chickens. The neighbors need to stop being so selfish and care more about others.

I so hope this little boy is allowed to continue to care for his feathered friends, if the set-up works very well for both the chickens and the boy it's a win win from what I can see. Shame on any bureaucratic-jobs-worth who tries to destroy something that works well and helps those in need.

Thanks for drawing my attention Barb - found the link to the petition & signed ...
Wish the counsellors would exert themselves more to helping neighbours understand the importance of this project as a means of enabling JJ to learn to communicate and to cope with his "difference", rather than choosing to act in a way that would be incomprehensible to any small child - let alon one just learning to trust & communicate.

Noted/signed with comment. Thank you. Autistic children are special and they should have whatever is necessary to help them.

So absolutely signed! I grew up with autism, and my cat helped me enormously. Animals (non-human ones, anyway) are not judgmental and can play a very important role in helping autistic children learn to become contributing members of society. Look at me - very active on Care2, decently employed, and a leader in my community.

UPDATE Dec. 13 -- The Orlando Sentinel reports that the DeBary City Council will vote to allow J.J. to keep his chickens on December 18. The resolution comes as a special accommodation for him, because of his disability. He will be able to have up to three chickens.

The decision to move forward in this manner came after the family's attorney threatened to sue on the basis of violating the boy's rights under the Federal Fair Housing Act, Americans with Disabilities Act and the Rehabilitation Act.

"We're very happy," J.J.'s mother told the Sentinel.
