It was unclear how long the dog had been in the back seat or if heat played a factor. Temps in Alpine reached over 100 degrees on Friday according to the National Weather Service.

I had a picture the K-9 but guess it didn't make it. For more info on this sad story please go to policeone.com. The officer was 22 years old top of his class and yet he left his K-9 in the patrol car in over 100 degree weather? Something's not right here!!

Such horrible news Barb. You would think that this officer, being at the top of his class, would have more sense than to leave his K-9 dog -- a fellow officer, in a locked car in 100 degree weather!!! Maybe he should be made to sit in the car and experience just what the poor dog had to go through. I tried it once and I didn't last longer than 5 minutes before I had to get my butt out of the car!!! PLEASE people, don't ever leave a child or animal in a car alone unattended ever, no matter what the temperature!!!!!!!!

noted with sadness...another innocent victim due to human stupidity...i really hope he feels as bad as he should but he should have known not to leave that poor dog in the car in 100 degree temperatures....i just hope he wouldn't do the same with a child!!!

The article also states that the case is under investigation, as it should be! I agree wit you Ramona, HE should be forced to sit locked in his car in 100 degree or higher weather!!! Once back in the late sixties, my mom took me and my poodle Nicky shopping with her. We rolled down all 4 windows for Nicky and by the time we got back he was barking and wagging his tail at us. But mind you, this was 1969 not 2008. My mom was way before her time!

The next time we took him-aside opening all 4 windows an inch-we even put a bowl of water on the floor in the back but the silly dog was so anxious to see us he didn't drink any. Instead, he knocked the bowl over and soaked the floor!! LOL He also got out of the car and started doing a little poodle dance and jumping up and down on Mom!!

Thanks for noting everyone. It isn't my favorite type of story to post but I felt I needed to. Oh yes, he's with his animal buddies at Rainbow Bridge waiting for animal lovers like us!

Those people should never work as police!
How stupid is that?
And they call that protection?
He doesn't even know what it means when he has it before his eyes to take care of!
Sorry Barbs, but this is so cruel.I don't want a guy like that working as a police.

I feel so sad when I read that this kind of thing is still happening. What's most impressive is that it happened to a top of his class police. What kind of WEED did you smoke my dear Comissary? Is that TO PROTECT AND SERVE when he isn't capable to take care of his own dog?!!!!

First we give a FOOL a gun and then we call him a COP! "TO PROTECT AND SERVE"...yeah, right.

How heartbreaking AND it happens so much with police officers and the dogs that they call "partner". Makes me sick to think that if they cannot even take care of their own partner, how the hell can they protect the public. Noted with great sadness. Candles for this Belgian Malinois ~K -9 ~ officer.

I agree with all your comments. He was 22 years old, a young cop. Both my nephews are cops and they'd never even CONSIDER doing such a horrid thing!!

noted. this is a sad and horrible story but what's even sadder is that this is not a one time thing. i fear this this will not be the last time a K9 officer will die because of people's stupidity and cruelty. i live in Illinois and the K9 officer here is forced to stay in the car sometimes all day long with no food or water and no matter what the temperature is. people have spoken out about it but the police department here just doesn't seem to care. don't they realize that the K9 officer is part of the force too? would they make one of their human officers to sit in the back of a hot car all day long with no food or water? i seriously doubt it. if an officer does not know how to or cannot take care of an animal properly then they have no business being responsible for the K9 officer. i agree with Bill McGlone. the police r supposed to "protect and serve" but what happened to protecting their own officers??

This is one cop that needs to lose his job!
Y'know, when a private citizen kills a police
dog, that person is tried on charges of murdering
a police officer.
Do you think this guy will face criminal charges of
murdering a police officer?
Not likely. The "thin blue line" isn't THAT thin!

Thanks, Barbcat.

This cop is obviously careless, irresponsible, and negligent. He's unfit to be a cop and must be sacked immediately!

Wow. This happens though. I worked for the state in Central Services, over Motor Pool, having to write nasty letters to employees, that abused their state vehicle, like speeding or vacationing out of state. One K-9 person left the dog in the SUV and went to a movie. People tattle. Luckily, the dog was okay from the heat. They must have gone into the theatre to get the employee to help his dog. They are expensive dogs, specially trained to save people. We don't want to lose them.

Noted with thanks Barb.

****PARKED VEHICLES ARE DEATH TRAPS****

PeOpLe need to sit in a parked car to see how bad it is,
with only cracked windows...(grrr)

(animals dont sweat and THEY HAVE ON FURCOATS!!!)

70 OUTSIDE can climb to 90, 100, or higher inside a parked vehicle,
a thermometer tossed in there might be a good reality check.

Last summer I got water for a long haired german shephard after he jumped out the window of an old truck while the guy in the g.store was buying his beer. It was about 4pm and this dog was running on scalding hot pavement in a busy parking lot. He finally got behind the grocery store on some grass and drank some water until the owner came out and collected him.

grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Thanks GBreeze, what sad story but with a happy ending. I wish these so-called animal lovers/pet owners would take more responsibilty for their pets. Thanks for giving the GSD a bowl of water.
