Guess I have been living outside the US for too long since I doubt I consider many of these items to be environmentally friendly.

Blecch! Of course it' s better to give recycled gold or bloodless diamonds if you have to give such stuff, but this does perpetuate the silly stereotype that women require fancy and expensive gifts.

Is there a corresponding list for mens' gifts?

Or better yet what I far prefer (understatement I will not wear jewelry) give in my name a donation to a children's charity in a country that has been affected by blood diamonds, or waters polluted by mining.

I think you guys missed the point of the article, which I think strikes a nice balance between eco-nut curmudgeons and Jimmy Choo-stepping reality. If you think anyone is going to give up material goods altogether to save the planet, you must be living in the stone age. Environmentalism isn't going to move forward without supporting companies that are changing traditional means of business to more eco-friendly and socially responsible operations. Your balking at either is just ridiculous. I can't imagine any of you are truly eco-friendly by your own standards. Are you running naked? Only eat food you grow on your own? Only walk and never take any means of transportation that you didn't engineer and build yourself? Come on. What closet do you live in? Women like pretty things... We do!

I liked the lighthearted nature of the article and its appeal to the average consumers. It wasn't condescending and pious like so many eco-articles, and gave people more ideas beyond planting trees and making hasty donations to unresearched causes.

All the featured products are geared at changing people's mindsets, which is the most important thing of all. There are really very few eco-friendly products out there at all. Any effort to get people thinking in the right direction is a good thing.

BTW... I'm glad the CFLs weren't included, because it's a overhyped bandwagon by the manufacturers. CFL's are highly toxic and hurtful to the environment, and when they break the dust is a serious health threat to pets and children. LED lights are the way to go, not CFLs. My extra $0.02. Peace out.

Maxwell thanks for mentioning CFL's I have a house full of them, and will use them until they burn out, but if I had known the content of mercury..............no puchase would have been made in the first place! Hopefully CFL collection and recycling facilities will open up to correct this big eco misshap and in the future LED's for sure....

Again, it's a nice selection of real gifts for rational people.
