The whole world is reeling after a milestone referendum in Britain to leave the European Union. And although leaders of the campaign to exit Europe are crowing over their victory, it seems many Britons may not even know what they had actually voted for.

If I had a nickel for every time any person on earth voted for something (or against something) they didn't understand, even just in this century, I would suddenly be a part of the 1%.

Noted. Thanks, John.

From what I've been reading (I'm no scholar on this subject), it seems the working class has been heavily damaged by European austerity. They feel much the same way our working class in the US does. Many believed, it seems, that a vote for Brexit would help them financially.

In my opinion, the unfortunate truth seems to be that the working class was going to continue to 'take a hit' regardless of how the vote went. And, they would be blamed either way.
The wealthiest were going to benefit if they 'played their cards right' if the vote went for Brexit. And, they do benefit from austerity.
Because of the strong pushback by Podemos in Spain, the 'Occupy' and Bernie movement here in the US, and other populist movements---the wealthiest have become deathly afraid of the working class, and are confusing the situation by entangling things like pensions in the markets. Pensions & retirements should be put in funds that are stable----to me, that is the bottom line. Our money should not be put in a place where it can be gambled away by dishonest thieves who have profitized it.

Higher taxes must be placed on the wealthiest, Corporate loopholes & trade agreements have always hurt the underclasses. A strong majority wants countries to stop funding wars and start funding social programs.

Lois, that was an excellent post. I can only differ from you in respect to voters motives.
While the economic news has been "rosier" in the U.S. Things really have improved here faster than in the UK.
I know that I barely survived the recession, and though my wages have been flat for the last 8 years I make a good wage. Nothing I can complain about compared to people that work minimum wage jobs for the same amount of time. My feeling is that the voters in the UK have been in the same boat but for a longer period of time,( 4 years longer), still waiting for trickle down to kick in while the rich get richer and they lose jobs, homes etc. This was a way of poking a sharp stick in the eye of the "elite". It can happen here in November as well. Best to open a discussion now that a surprise later. Thank you for sharing.

It was the banking houses in London that were embroiled in the "LIBOR" scandal where trades and interest rates were rigged to enrich greedy individuals who wished they were "Elite". It must have been very embarrassing to people who pride themselves on compassion and understanding. I noted that London voted Remain while everyone wanted out. Seems that in color of the above article the Brits can no longer claim intellectual superiority over Americans for electing Bush or even Trump if it is to be. They are still good people. Frustrated as all get out, but the good remains. I think that will make the struggle worth while in the end.

fear AND ignorance was what drove this vote. I hope they wake up soon and see that they were LIED to. Then they must rejoin the EU.

"eight hours after the polls closed, Google reported that searches for "what happens if we leave the EU" had more than tripled." Pity they didn't do the research before!

This was one impressive protest vote.

The problem, however does not lie with the EU, it is much closer to home. If the voting public stays vigilant and engaged, this will make both Brittan and the EU stronger, if not well, good luck.

We'll need a little more than good luck.

Perhaps if the right-wing press/media machine had a attack of conscience, something would stir. . . .

Sounds about like here. Must do all the research BEFORE voting and make sure you we are not falling for lies. I hope the UK can recover soon.

Sod off remain trolls, there will be no 2nd referendum.

Pro remainer Theresa May must be stopped from succeeding in her attept to become PM, we got rid of one traitorous pro remainer, we will not accept another pro EU'er.

Brexiter Andrea Leadsom is the rightful candidate

Theresa May must not be allowed to become PM.

She is a deceiver, tricking people into believing she was a pro Brexiter, but she was nowhere to be seen or heard when the Referendum was upon us, she only resurfaced days afterwards and it was then she showed her true colours that she was a pro remainer.

She is reported to want muslim sharia law in our country, this is not and never will be acceptable to our people and country.

She has failed time and again to protect our people and country from or get justice for our people and country in removing muslim terrorists / criminals from our country, on the one occasion she did so, removing Abu Hamza, it took ten years and a lot of our peoples money to do so, and yet Hamza's family is still here living at tax payers expense, there is a huge number of foreign nationals and muslims whom have committed crimes and are still in our country, and why ?, because of the interference of the EU and the European Court.
If May becomes PM, with her being a pro remainer, you can be sure that she will continue to allow the EU and the European Court to interfere in our country's affairs and continue to prevent muslims and foreign criminals from being removed from our country !!

There is a petition waiting to be submitted, it requires a number of signatures in order for it to go live.

If you are a UK resident, Pro Brexit and Patriot, then you must sign.

In the Referendum Patriots prevailed against those whom would subvert our country, sovereignty and control of our country's borders, Pro remainer Cameron was kicked out, but now Pro remainer Theresa May is attempting to take up where he left off, she has got to be stopped.

We voted for Brexit and therefore we want, need and must have a Pro Brexit PM, and May is not it.

The next PM must be Pro Brexit Andrea Leadsom

We have voted to leave the EU. We want article 50 of the Lisbon treaty to be invoked immediately.

The remain trolls are spewing they're garbage.

Pro remain campaign blatantly and disgustingly used the death of MP Cox in attempts to influence the vote.

Cameron used £9 Million of tax payers money for Pro Remain leaflets, he should be tried and found gulity of theft !!.
