Hypothyroidism Gains a Higher Profile

Health & Wellness  (tags: condition, hypothyroidism, weight gain, exhaustion )

a doctor she'd consulted for an unrelated condition began asking questions about her general health. The doctor wanted to know if Tamosaitis gained weight easily and for no reason. Diagnosis? Hypothyroidism, or a sluggish, underactive thyroid.

I'm glad to see buzz on hypothyroidism, however, it does bug me that it states that synthetic thyroid hormone (Synthyroid) "doesn't leave her with adverse side effects". This is untrue. I can cause a 13% bone mass loss among other things. I know from experience, I took it for 23 years and was out of work for 1 year because of the bone mass loss and wasn't able to take care of myself due to it. Also, Synthyroid only has T3 and you thyroid actually makes T1, T2, T3, and T4, so you are missing other key componets. That's my thoughts. Like I said I'm glad people are more aware of Hypothyroidism.

I've already been tested, but have been thinking of having another one done. I've had several of the symptoms lately. Hypothyroidism is a big problem and I believe (in my city at least) it is due mostly to environmental causes. Two of my sisters have it and we have no previous family history. It's no secret that the water here is bad.

Anyway, more needs to be done about preventing environmental causes and also diagnosing it. Thanks for the article.
