Stop Stoning Forever Campaign

Urgent Press Release
No. 86-3-a

URGENT: A Man and a Woman Schedule To Be Stoned on Thursday, June 21

The news about the scheduled stoning of a man and a woman in Takistan, Ghazvin, was spread through mobile phone messages and the Internet. The office of Showraye Tameen of Ghazvin province has issued the order to stone and man and a woman in public.

The judge of Branch 1 of the Criminal Court of Takistan will be present in person to throw the first stone. This was scheduled to be done on Sunday, June 17, but the Office of Showraye Tameen of Ghazvin province postponed it to Thursday, June 21.

Mokarrameh Ebrahimi is a 43 year old woman and mother of an 11 year old who has spent the past 11 years in Choubin prison in Ghazvin after being sentenced to stoning. The father of the child has also been in prison for 11 years and is scheduled to be stoned with her.

According to the Meydaan, the official site of the Stop Stoning Forever Campaign, an informed source has verified the news and added that "the pits are dug and prepared in Behesht Zahra cemetery to implement the sentence."

This source also added that the sentence has been issued solely based on the judge's knowledge, and there have been no witnesses to the so called crime of adultery and having a child out of wedlock. It seems that the couple have lived together for a while and shortly after been imprisoned. There are different rumors about the woman's past. Some say that her husband had thrown her out of the house and she had been living with her mother for two years. Both the man and the woman have children from their previous marriages. Mokarrameh, who is the mother of three children, is very distressed and in sever disarray in prison.

It seems that after the appeal to the Judicial Commission for Amnesty and Clemency had been rejected, it is going to be carried out as the result of the perseverance of one of the judiciary officials in Ghazvin.

The official announcement about the stoning is going to be posted at the site of execution in order to invite the public to participate in the process in Takistan. This is while the Iranian officials continue to deny any stoning sentence.

The Stop Stoning Forever Campaign activists plea to the citizens of the world to take any actions they possibly can in order to stop the stoning of this couple from taking place.

Further detailed information will be provided as campaign activists are trying to obtain more knowledge about the case in Takistan. To contact campaign activists in the US or Iran please email Soheila Vahdati < soheilavahdati@gmail.com> or Shadi Sadr < shadisadr@gmail.com>.

Stop Stoning Forever Campaign

Send this petition to:
The Head of Judiciary
The Head of Parliament

Subject:
Petition to Eradicate the Law of Stoning

Petition:
To: His Excellency Ayatollah Mahmoud Hashemi Shahroudi
Cc: Mr. Golam-Ali Haddad-Adel, the leader of the Iranian Parliament

The act of punishing people by stoning them to death in today’s world is such an unacceptable and inhuman act of brutality that even the members of the government are ashamed of admitting to doing it, and have publicly denied that this merciless practice takes place in Iran. Despite the government’s denial, this penalty is a sanctioned part of the Islamic Penal Code of Iran and it is being carried out without any legal obstacles.

We, the undersigned are extremely alarmed that the punishment of stoning to death has been adopted by the country’s legal system as a reasonable and acceptable form of retribution. Although, in December of 2002, your Excellency placed a ban on carrying out this type of sentence, in reality stonings have continued to take place in different parts of the country. In May 2006, in the city of Mashhad, a woman Mahboubeh M. and a man Abbas H. were both stoned to death.

Prior to carrying out the stoning, prior to their death, these two people were treated as if they were dead. In accordance with the Islamic tradition, their bodies were washed as if they were lifeless corpses, and wrapped in the kafan or white shroud. Then their wrapped bodies were buried in the ground, Mahboubeh’s body was buried up to her shoulders, and Abbas was buried up to his waist. The crowd, who had gathered to stone the two to death slowly as specified by law, then targeted them with their stones. All this took place without any mention of it in the public media of the country.

Apart from the above mentioned two cases, at least eleven people, nine women and two men as listed below have been condemned to be stoned to death. Their situation is grave. It is also possible that there are other people who have been condemned to death by stoning and we are not aware of it.

1 Ms. Parisa A. (Adel Abad Prison, Shiraz)
2 Ms. Kobra N. (Tabriz Prison, Tabriz)
3 Ms. Kheireyeh V. (Sepidar Prison, Ahwaz)
4 Ms. Iran A. (Sepidar Prison, Ahwaz)
5 Ms.Malak (Shamameh) Ghorbani (Orumieh Prison, Orumieh)
6 Ms.Hajieh Esmailvand (Jolfa Prison, Jolfa)
7 Ms.Soghra Molawyi (Varamin Prison, Varamin)
8 Ms.Ashraf Kallhori (Evin Prison, Tehran)
9 Ms. Fatemeh (Tehran)
10 Mr.Abdollah Farivar (Sari Prison, Sari)-Male
11 Mr. Najaf A. (Abdel-Abad Prison, Shiraz)-Male

According to Article 6 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, signed and ratified by Iran in 1975, “in countries which have not abolished the death penalty, sentence of death may be imposed only for the most serious crimes”. Article 7 of the same covenant states that “No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhumane or degrading treatment or punishment.” Despite ratifying the above covenant, the Islamic penal code gives the judges the right to sentence the accused to death by stoning even when the crime of adultery has not been proved according to the same penal code’s standards and requirements. Article #105 of the Islamic penal code gives the judges the absolute right to condemn the accused to death by stoning solely based on the judge’s subjective interpretation of the case.

We the undersigned demand and stress the need to change all laws contrary to human rights. We believe there are no crimes that deserve the punishment of stoning to death and we insist that this inhumane practice should be abolished forever.

Dear Friends,

I had posted this news yesterday as soon as it was released. It has had no response and as we are running out of time to save this couple from stoning, ( we have less than 24 hours) I am asking you to please contact the Iranian Embassy nearest you to protest this action.

Their only crime was to be in love and have a child out of wedlock.

They have served 11 years in prison and their child has lived all those years without the natural parents.

As if this was not punishment enough, now they are going to be executed by public stoning.

You have recently heard of the death of Du'a, the 17 year old Kurdish girl who was stoned for falling in love a boy outside of her community.

This is the most brutal and horrific form of execution.

We appreciate every effort you can make to contact the Iranian Embassy and/or the Iranian Judiciary personally and to pass this on to all of your friends in your network and beyond.

Thank you in advance.

I called the Iranian Embassy in the US. They didn't know what I was talking about transferred me a few times. Then the man told me that they don't do stonings because they have enough problems. He wanted to know where I got the information. He said that he would check it out but that sometimes people "just make up news."

Bush has not made the conditions of women better but worse. In Iraq, for example, honour killings continue to happen . The safety of women is worse. Viking, who are you? What is YOUR agenda and who told you that women's rights get better by killing innocent civilians.?
Regarding honour killings, why do these people who support stoning don't go to jail?
LET WOMEN LIVE THEIR LIFE IN PEACE!!!!
The stoning of people is suported by those who ignore it as well. And those who do it are sick of hatred, ignorant people who should be in jail!

Adulterous couple spared death by stoning in Iran
Last updated at 21:37pm on 20th June 2007

Comments Comments
A couple due to be stoned to death today for adultery are thought to have had a last-minute reprieve.

A campaign had been mounted to save the Iranian pair who have already served 11 years in jail.

And last night an official in Takestan, the town where the couple were sentenced to die, said they would be spared.

Norway's foreign ministry, which has protested against the execution and threatened diplomatic action, also said it had been called off.

stoning

An Iranian judiciary has ordered a stay of execution on a couple sentenced to death by stoning

Amnesty International had urged the head of Iran's judiciary, Ayatollah Shahroudi, to intervene.

Mokarrameh Ebrahimi, 43, and her unnamed boyfriend were jailed in Qazvin province following the birth of their son.

Their case was raised by Stop Stoning Forever, an Iranian women's group.

A spokesman said the couple were living together when they were first detained.

"There are different rumours about her past," she added.

"Some say that her husband had thrown her out of the house and she had been living with her mother for two years.

"Both the man and the woman had children from their previous marriages.

"Mokarremeh is very distressed and in severe disarray in prison."

Amnesty's Steve Ballinger said: "We understand the pits have been dug in readiness for the execution.

"We have heard reports that there has been a stay of execution but we haven't heard anything official."

The executions were given the goahead after judges rejected a late plea for clemency.

Under Iranian law, adultery can be proved only by eyewitness testimony, a confession by the defendant or by the judge's "knowledge" that adultery has taken place.

In this case, the conviction was grounded on the judge's "knowledge" that the couple had had a child together.

An Iranian couple are thought to have been stoned to death in Mashhad last year for adultery.

Echo and all who have been so helpful here...I have an official update.

THE EXECUTION HAS BEEN POSTPONED BUT THE SENTENCE OF STONING TO DEATH HAS NOT BEEN WITHDRAWN.

The protest has caused a pause and I would encourage all to keep the pressure on as we do not know when they will be taken again to be stoned. We have bought them some time...that is all.

Things change so quickly and all cases in Iran are complicated and unpredictible.

Here is the statement just translated for me from Farsi. Please follow their recommendations as they understand the full history and complexity of the case.

They ask that we continue to advocate for them both.

Stop Stoning Forever Campaign

Press Release

No. 86-3-c

20 June 2007

Temporary Success: Stoning of Mokarrameh and her Partner Suspended

The stoning of Mokarrameh Ebrahimi and the father of her 11 year old illegitimate child was stayed by the written order of the Head of Judiciary in Tehran addressed to the head of the judiciary branch in Takistan. The stoning had been scheduled for Thursday morning, local time, and the order came less than 24 hours before the scheduled time.

The Stop Stoning Forever Campaign would like to thank all the individuals and organizations who have contacted the Iranian officials and plead for the lives of the couple. Despite the short time for action, many people and human rights organizations raised their opposition to stoning of the couple and shared their concerns with the Iranian judiciary officials. The Stop Stoning Forever Campaign owes this temporary success to the overwhelming support of the many conscience citizens of the world.

It is crucial to understand that the stoning sentence of Mokarrameh Ebrahimi and her partner is still legally in effect and it is only the implementation of the sentence that has been suspended. Another woman, Kobra Najjar, who is also the mother of four children and had been forced to prostitution by her husband, a drug addict, is also facing stoning to death after her appeal to the Judiciary Commission for Amnesty and Clemency was rejected for the third time last week. Furthermore, there are at least seven other men and women who are sentenced to stoning for having committed adultery.

In order to save the lives of Mokarrameh Ebrahimi, her partner, Kobra Najjar, and all the other men and women who have been sentenced to stoning, the loud opposition to stoning shall continue until the Iranian legal system puts an end to stoning.

In May 2006, a man and a woman, Abbas and Mahboubeh, were stoned in Mashhad for having committed adultery, and a woman named Masoumeh was hanged in Evin prison for adultery in October 2006. The Stop Stoning Forever Campaign activists fear that other forms of the death penalty might replace stoning, if the law is not changed.

We are urging you to please continue the efforts to abolish stoning in Iran. Together, we can stop stoning forever all over the world.

Dear Sandra,

Thank you for the link from Amnesty. They do have campaigns to end stoning as they also have for Reza and Delara.

In this case however, we are so short of time that we cannot wait for a letter to pass via AI to Iran.

Amnesty has also been having many of their letters and petitions blocked and marked as spam.

That is why there have been so many "visible" campaigns on behalf of human rights, which have included the Amnesty Bus Tour in Europe recently ( posted on our SaveDelara site on Care2 and at savedelara.com). that have taken to personally delivering petitions to the appropriate embassys to circumvent the block.

In these cases delay means death.

This couple have been on death row for 11 years. Now that the judiciary have moved to execute with less than 48 hours notice, we are forced to use the most direct route possible.

Thank you again. Send through AI but please also send your protest direct to Iran.

Lamargo, I have a war crimes archive on FWFJCW.

I have several pictures and videos re: stoning.

If you would like to create a thread for these images, we can do that. It would be very educational. A picture truly is worth a thousand words.

Renee, the execution was scheduled for 8:30 AM.

As we have been told that it has been postponed, we are still working to have the sentence lifted entirely. It could be caried out tomorrow in a secret location. Hence the request for the faxes and phone calls...

We will be informed if there is an execution, but so far all we know is that the protests have caused a temporary stay.

What does that really mean ?

? Not much.

To all the people of Iraq ---- Please step into the 21st Century, live your lives with compassion and empathy, not cruelty and barbarism!!!!! Everybody makes mistakes or does something at sometime that they shouldn't do, BUT they certainly don't deserve to DIE for it!!!!!!!!

Well, we can't count on our president to do anything, since, as govenor of Texas he allowed more exicutions than any govenor in any state, ever. Of course he might use it as another pretext for war.

First please know that these executions are in IRAN...not IRAQ.

Second, I must tell you that what the government is doing is NOT representative of the majority of people in Iran.

I would say that less than 20% of Iranians share the views and beliefs of their leaders....in fact it is much the same as America in this.

They are highly educated people, sensitive, passionate, gentle, kind, caring, refined and many are not religions at all. Most who are are liberal in their beliefs.

So we must remember not to generalize or stereotype.

That would be a very serious mistake.

Indigo

Who is this dumbass fool from the viking era ? He is okay with Idiotbush killing off thousands of inocent people, and then gets upset over others concerned about the killing of two. What on earth is he doing here, this is not the place for his primitive little brain ? If there is house cleaning to be done then clean up at home. As for kicking ass, kick some ass in the next election so that you can live by your constitution and not against it.

Are these people mad? I'm sure that most of Iran's people are perfectly ordinary people, but this-? Executed because they accidently had a child out of wedlock? Granted that raising a family has its challenges... but killed for it? Who have they ever wronged?

Please stay with these campaigns as Indigo and Kalima have been threatened with death if they remain on Care2.

Care2's response to this when they reported the matter, was that they were banned.

The perpetrator still roams freely on this site and no disciplinary action has been taken against him.

And this full knowing he has threatened many and like Indigo, each one was banned for reporting him and he remained.

There is no justice in this.

This was a politically motivated attack to stop her from advocating for the rights of women and children.

The perpetrator hates all Muslims and as Indigo supported all campaigns for them she was "taken out" and this plot was hatched long ago and finally took effect last week.

Members of the community who were aware of this are coming forward with helpful information that is being given to her lawyer and they are gathering more.

They will not be returning but Indigo is deeply concerned that these campaigns and all news items related to them, continue to gather community support and all the signatures, letters, faxes and phone calls needed to ensure a happy resolution for these people.

She is leaving this in your hands now and she also asks that you guard these items from those who hate.

If anyone posts derogatory or hateful comments, please flag them and report all abuse, demanding that their coments be removed from each thread.

This is especially urgent with all threads for the children of Iran.

Cherish them as she did and always will.

I am outraged that the man who threatened to kill Kalima and Indigo has noted this news.

For months he has dogged her steps !

Now the watcher is the watched as the community itself takes the matter farther.
