So---are we saying the courts should remain silent on this issue because the public might not like it? Is the author suggesting that judicial rulings in civil rights cases shouldn't have been issued because people in the south might not have liked it?

I don't think so....

The courts must lead the way because the Constitution guarantees equal rights for everyone... including women, gays, minorities..
If we wait for social ideologies to change, people will be waiting for their rights for far too long.
