A citizen of Belarus is facing a two-year prison term for operating an ‘unregistered’ religious organization. If he is jailed, he could be considered a prisoner of conscience. Aliaksei Shchadrou is a devout Catholic who was running a shelter for homeless people since late 2011. He provided those in need with food, clothing, a bed, and a place to the bathe. During the winters, he would provide space for up to 30 people in his home. He was recently charged with running an unregistered organization. This charge is against his right to freedom of association.

The charge states that Mr. Shchadrou was organizing at his place of residence an unregistered religious organization. This charge also implies a level of religious intolerance towards Mr. Shchadrou and his catholic beliefs. In his defense, Mr. Shchadrou maintains that the organization was more an act of charity than an organized effort to spread religion or provide real, lasting services to the homeless of the area.

As stated previously, this charge violates his freedom of association. The prosecutor in charge of the case must immediately throw out the charges against Mr. Shchadrou. Sign this petition and demand that the charges are thrown out and he is released immediately and unconditionally. The case against him is unconstitutional and violates the UN’s International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

S & N, thanks, my friend. What can be illegal about caring for the homeless? More people should be doing it. Free this man, he is needed by those who have no food or a place to sleep.

Yes Barbara, Aleksiey is "local hero".... But communistic gov. on Belarus doesn't like such people, which show many unsolved social problems. President Lukashenko represses everyone who does anythinhg regardless of his regime. :-(

While I'm not familiar with the laws of Belarus, this seems like a ridiculous waste of resources to punish a man for helping others out of his own home and pocket. I think that the only ones who could say if he were doing something wrong would be the very people he's helping. If he was issuing unsafe food or if the people he allowed to stay in his home were mistreated, that would be something worth prosecuting. But it seems he has done nothing that would warrant imprisonment. Thanks, Apolonia, I've signed & shared!

This is all working out of the same playbook. We have same thing happening in the USA. People being arrested and placed in jail for feeding the hungry and homeless.

The Elites don't want to help the poor, hungry and homeless. In fact policies have been to take away the little Governmental help there is. Anyone with a heart and the ability should be reaching out and helping those less fortunate.

But the Oligarchy wants to poor to disappear, starve to death if need be, not their concern. Cities making it so they can't even lay their heads down to rest else they'll be arrested. More bodies for the For Profit Prisons. I feel for you in that part of the World, it seems to be the Cancer spread to every corner.

Just like the law an the governments all over this "DOG EAT DOG NON-CARING HATEFUL HUMAN WORLD" when a human dose a good thing an try's shows a little kindness an caring to a human or non-human (in my case I care for the forgotten street cats an kittens in my area) instead of helping them they throw them in jail an try to close down what ever they are doing but they will stand behind and help crooks like the banks an credit card company an call them hero's now I see why the numbers are so small for people who want to help human an non-human life live a little better when they have nothing not even a pot to piss in so why is it illegal to do "GOOD" an it is alright to do "BAD" this old hippie would like to know??. =^..^=

This is utterly stupid. What that beautiful man is doing is not for himself, but for his fellow man who is not as fortunate as he is. The government should be glad he is doing that. It gets people off the street and allows them to feel like humans not forgottens on the street

Jesus would have understood and helped this wonderful, loving and noble man. But of course even Jesus and his good works would have gotten him arrested! Especially if Jesus were to go to Wall Street. Heck we might even put him on a cross and let him die, oh wait that did happen 2,000 years ago. We are not progressiving much are we. Sad on all levels.

For goodness sake! This is so lacking in logic it's a wonder the country can run at all. But then again most of our nations have equally ridiculous, counter-survival laws and actions. No wonder so many are completely apathetic to the idea of a future, our present is completely insane apart from a few pockets of sanity and love. If you find one of these pockets hold onto it, support it with all you have, they are our hope and our future.

Why would it be criminal to help people? This man has opened up his home to help the homeless, he put a roof over their heads, food in their stomachs, clothes on their backs, warmth for people and their pets and this is criminal? He is doing what the state should be doing for the homeless. Do you realize how many people will be on the streets again homeless & hungry & cold, if it wasn't for this man? This state should be a shame of themselves. If anything the state should kick in some cash$$$ to help this guy keep his home open to these people.
If the state is worried about the food quality Mr.Aleksei Shchadrou provides it certainly can't be as bad as these people going through restaurant garbage bins looking for scraps. How ridiculous.
The charity this man is giving these people should not get him arrested.
The state needs to drop all charges and kick in some $$$.
