By Kathy Price, Colombia Campaigner, Amnesty International Canada

"The terrible news came via a skype call from Colombia. Juan Pablo Gutiérrez, the big-hearted, creative, hard-working advocate for the rights of threatened Indigenous peoples and collaborator with Amnesty Canada, told me about receiving an envelope containing a death threat from the notorious Aguilas Negras (Black Eagles), a feared paramilitary group.

The message warned that Juan Pablo was now a paramilitary target and would be killed for his work with the National Indigenous Organization of Colombia (ONIC), a coalition with whom Amnesty International Canada has worked closely in recent years.

The death threat had been delivered to Juan Pablo as he waited for public transit near his home, en route to work, making clear that the paramilitaries had been monitoring his movements and knew where to find him."

Thank you for taking action for Juan Pablo Guitierrez. Your voice is sending a clear message to the Canadian government to use its influence in Colombia to press for the protection of Indigenous peoples. Thank you!

I placed a story on C2 awhile back about the increase of murders of those on the front lines standing up for the justice of our environments, people, and animals. Is terrible and increasing all the time as more people are having to fight for the very existence of so many things.

Prayers for his life to be safe and protected and thank you for the opportunity to sign this. I hope it helps.
Ah, here is that link to story I mention about.

Wonderful news: thanks to you, Juan Pablo Gutiérrez has been given protection!
Thank you so much!
You helped us flood Colombia with urgent messages urging that Juan Pablo be protected.
And we just learned that the Director of the National Protection Unit has intervened on this case and will grant Juan Pablo the protection measures required.

This comes as an incredible relief to us, since we're fully aware of the gravity of death threats in Colombia, and the risks that face those who speak out to protect the rights of Indigenous peoples. Of course, we will continue to closely monitor the situation, since the protection measures he has been granted are just that - measures - and will be evaluated after a period of time..

In a heartwarming message to us from Juan Pablo, he says he is convinced that all the messages from Canada played a crucial role in this positive outcome:

"I have just heard that I have been awarded urgent protection measures in the form of a body guard, bullet proof vest, cell phone and budget that will enable me to get to work by secure taxi. Thank you to everyone who took action and created the pressure that has yielded this victory! But sadly I have to tell you that these protections are temporary, lasting only for the next three months, while the danger I face is unrelenting. For this reason, I ask you to continue to speak up and express concern for my safety so that the protection is extended. Thank you again from the bottom of my heart!"
