Fifty-five square feet of rainforest is destroyed for every quarter pound hamburger that comes from a cleared rainforest cattle farm. While most of us blame automotive and industrial emissions for pollution, climate change and global warming, livestock

i meet a lot of meat eaters who like to preach about recycling or fixing a leaky faucet and other things to save the environment but when you suggest they stop eating meat they scream about personal choice. i'm glad to see the tremendous damage done to the environment by animal agriculture finally getting more attention.

Veganism, that is the single most effective action an individual can take to help all ecosystems

When something goes wrong the knee jerk reaction of people from the president down to the schoolchild is to reject any possibility of personal responsibility direct or indirect. The case of deforestation is a classic one. I can remember in the 80’s having a Brazilian point out to me from an aircraft what the locals then called, “The McDonald’s Desert” and the “Burger King desert” and so on. He remarked that the US and others’ insatiable demands for beef would before long eat their way through all the forests of South and Central America. It is very easy to deflect the blame towards big corporations or the World Bank or corrupt politicians but what about the rank irresponsibility of the overfed morons queuing up for their oversized hamburgers that after all, creates the demand in the first place? What about those zoots in suits who crawl out of their offices into the steak house every evening and order an enormous steak they cannot possibly finish? The list is long and until the ordinary citizen in the EU, USA and elsewhere starts taking responsibility for personal consumption by exercising some discretion the forests will all disappear along with their inhabitants of flora, fauna and indigenous people.

Informative article. Poor cows. Cows don't kill rainforests...people do. And they kill the cows and every other living thing on this planet. This was a very good read. Thank you.
