"With compromise talks at a standstill, Senate Republicans unexpectedly offered Tuesday to hand President Barack Obama new powers to avert a first-ever, potentially catastrophic government default threatened for Aug. 2.

Under a proposal outlined by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, Obama could request — and likely secure — increases of up to $2.5 trillion in the government’s borrowing authority in three separate installments over the next year, as long as he simultaneously proposed spending cuts of greater size.

The debt limit hikes would take effect unless blocked by Congress under special rules that would require speedy action — and even then Obama could exercise his authority to veto such legislation.

McConnell made his proposal public a few hours before Obama presided over his third meeting in as many days with congressional leaders.

Obama, meanwhile, told CBS in an interview that he could not guarantee that Social Security checks would go out on Aug. 3 “if we haven’t resolved this issue.”

“There may simply not be the money in the coffers to do it,” he said. AP"

That is not a very good deal when Obama has to cut spending of greater size for each one. And we know what the Rs want cut.

I'm really sick of their childish behavior. Septugenarian Ninja Turtle McConnell's proposal will probably not fly.

Ol' Turtlehead's mouth is moving again. And we all know what that means. Don't believe a single thing that comes out of his pie hole.

The Founding Fathers had the right idea and many patriots would like for America to continue to be the best place to live.
Vote all the leftist(demigods and republic alike) out of office.

I meant to add, that if any spending cuts were to be made, they should include all the GOP representatives' salaries and benefits, so that they would be on the same level as the most affected American would be, if their standoff had succeeded. Also they would have to be prevented from taking any money from lobbyists and corporations.
After that, they could argue for spending cuts.

They(republicans) have stated it many times that their first priority is to make sure President Obama is a 1 term president. What does that tell us all? They're a bunch of hypocrites who pretend to care for the American people, meanwhile many of us may have to go without a paycheck early august. Will they???

No such deal without provision to raise revenues, not just cut spending. Cutting spending in a bad job market like this is economic idiocy. This is just a desperate grandstand play because the GOP realize their conduct is starting to offend most Americans

We can all state our opinions on this forum and they are all good but we cannot do a damn thing about what they are doing. They all lie to get in office and then cover their own butts. They should have the same benifets we have, not everything paid for them and then I bet they would whistle a different tune. Lets cut some of their salaries and benefits and see what they think about that. God help us all.

Nothing important to say here, I just had a thought of how this reminds me of how teacher strikes always come about a week before school is supposed to start...

It's time for President Obama to dig in his heels and tell them all he will veto any bill that does not increase taxes on the rich and halt the tax breaks to huge (record breaking profits!) corporations. Then he needs to add in that Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security are off limits. The stubborn republicans think they hold all the cards, but they don't, because the President can, and should, invoke the 14th Ammendment.
Enough nice guy, Mr. President. Stand up to the thugs and do your job for (we) the people.

Slimy Scumbags, I have gone passed tolerance and have had no filter on my anger for some time now with these small brained tyrants. Nail these morons to the wall, call them out and let the chips fall. These people are taking us down no matter what happens unless they get their butt kissing masters EVERYTHING they are screaming for whether it makes sense or will help pull this Nation out of the muck and mire we're in. I'm sick of these lying SOB's going on TV and saying THIS is what the American people want. Lying sacks of skin and whoever voted for them in the 2010 election better get their heads on straight and look at just exactly what the hell they've already done to America and individual states. They are determined to take the USA down and kill off the middle class ONLY for their revenge of Obama winning strong in 2008. I guarantee this family will not abide by their unscrupulous and filthy laws they want to pass or hypocritical morals. No more accepting their insane actions and intent. This country needs to kick every single republican out of office in coming elections then we'll work on the democrats with the padded pockets that are corrupt to the bone too.
