"Shocking quantities" of "potentially unsafe" rat meat are being sold illegally in London marketplaces, BBC reports. The news organization discovered that Ridley vendors were not only selling "smokies"...

Countries need to be more vigilant about bush meat. How are such huge quantities being smuggled in? Vendors should lose their licenses if found with such meat.

wow :/ If they did find this out, I agree with Suz that they should be shut down if they had knowledge of what the meat was

There are so many, many reasons people should stop eating meat. But who would have thought this would be one of them! Go vegetarian, save your health and save the planet.

Well, is the filthy chicken, our confined mistreated cow any better? This should be a warning to those that eating meat from any source is detrmental to your health. Go veggie.

At least "grasscutters" can be raised in captivity for meat as a source of income for impoverished people in developing countries- far better than actual "bushmeat" which can include endangered species. A grasscutter may be related to rats but it's more like eating a rabbit than a sewer rat (I'm a vegetarian, so I'm not eating grasscutters, rabbits, or any other animals- but I would rather people raise grasscutters than hunt endangered primates...)

You would be surprised the amount of bush meat that does get smuggled in.

As far as I'm concerned, anyone who eats bush meat deserves to get ebola or some other deadly disease.

Maybe they want to become immune to the Black Death? I think possums are related to rats (at least their tails look like it) wouldn't want to eat that either, but people do.
I think a tire sauted in BP oil would be more appetizing.

I thought Africans were eating bushmeat more because they need it for food. Why would they be importing it?? I worry about eating the odd bit of chicken or beef on non-veggie days.....so guess I don't have to be tempted to eat any strange meat.

Might be poetic justice that the same animals we hook by the nose, budgeon, wring their necks, and then boil in hot water or an oven eventually end up killing us with excruciating cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and other debilitating disease?

It's one thing to eat animals as a last resort when you straving to death. It's another thing to build up an entire industry on the confinement, slaughter, and eventual killing of these animals.
