Mitt Romney's Role as Mormon Bishop Shows His Extremist Religious Beliefs

One winter day, far along into her pregnancy with her second child, 21-year-old Peggy Hayes received a phone call from Willard Mitt Romney. He wanted to talk to her, he said. Could he come over?

......"Yet when it comes to stepping into the 21st century on women’s equality, gay civil rights and sex—as many ordinary Mormons would prefer-- the Mormon Church has dug in its heels.

And this is where Romney comes in."

Who know where he stands on anything. The man has flip-flopped so much over the years no one knows what he's for from one minute to the next, and that's what is disturbing.

I agree with Cynthia, but in case of his religion, I believe he stands firm with them. IF Mitt and Paul get in and/or republicans take over, we will certainly go back to WORSE than the Bush years. More like the DARK AGES for America.
This country is already being controlled by a few greedy billionaires. Should we let them continue and make it worse?

Romney's allegiance to his religion will only make the Republican's war on women a much higher priority on his agenda. Women don't need the government involved in their personal lives! If it was smaller government that the Republicans truly believed in, this wouldn't even be an issue! For women, government will be more intrusive than ever under Romney's and Ryan's leadership!

Thanks for this important post, Carrie! One more very important reason to keep Mitt out of the White House!

I feel quite conflicted about bringing Romney's religion into this debate, but since he has chosen to run for the highest office in this country, I must ask questions. Romney's obvious subjugation of women is quite unacceptable, as well of his stance on all women's rights.

This has less to do about religion- and more to do with equality for all women.

There is nothing in Mitten's background to suggest that he accepts separation of church and state as a basic principle of American government.

I was actually watching a documentary that was on TV the other day about there issues, and showed a lot of videos from the time he was preaching in the mormon church! All I can say is, he better not become president! And he sure seems to claim to 'forget' a lot of things he did and said to people in the past.

Does Mitt Romney have a single thought in this head that is actually his own.
The problem with the people that are so controlled by a religion is that they have to do such violence to their own, beautiful nature, that they find themselves completely deformed. Then they have to deform others. With passing generations it appears to be worse. How dare he walk into a single mother's home and demand that she give her baby up for adoption. Then on top of that he lies.
What a deformed monstrosity his mind must be - how lacking in compassion.

Pay attention to this man! I personally don't care how he interacts with his invisible sky pal....but I DO care when he wants to tell others how to live their lives!

That's the problem with religions when they're out of control....THEY ARE DANGEROUS!

I was a single parent, Mormon (inactive) and I got more help from the church/bishop then anyone else. I never got a visit from any man from the church alone. They forbid one man from the church to enter my home when I was single including the bishop and I totally respected that.
I don't know this bishop (Romney) nor the gal making the accusations, but in the defense of the Mormon church that I got help from, with no strings attached and they were always willing to help me. I was never threatened to be excommunicated and they had several reasons why they could have.

Thanks for the post. Let's hear more about the Mormon church.

We have had enough of the damn disgusting war on women!

The dictates of the totally patriarchal Mormon church are even worse than the patriarchal Catholic church. My friend, who was a Mormon, says that everyone in the church has a "calling"---and that most women are "called" to be mothers and homemakers and serve men. If Willard wins, I guess it 's true that they will take America back to the 1940's or 1950's---very scary!

Lois Jordan, you are wrong.

If elected he will not take America back to the 1940's or 1950's; he will take America back to the 1600's.

Romney is just another religious extremist that needs to keep his church at home and out of our politics.

It's true they don't go to the house of a single woman (oh my! what could happen?) but come in twos. My ex husband (Mormon) wouldn't help me with some housework on sunday ("its the Sabbath") but he an another guy were more than happy to go visit a single woman that day and do yardwork.
I think he figured I was a lost cause, and she had soul redeeming Mormon gold stars potential. Maybe that's why Mitt shrugs off the 45% as going to hell in a handbasket losers. Maybe his temple garments will make him vanish with a puff of smoke during the Rapture.

Romney is the perfect poster boy/shill/robo-signer for the Christian Taliban of America-Repug-Tea Bagged-Corporate Alliance in the White House. He vaunts his religious donations and background with a 'trust me', he 'pays all taxes due' confirmed with a 2010 return and a retro-engineered 2012 tax return both of which he can amend and summary all validated with a 'trust me'. His policies are vague or have math that does not function in a 2+2=4 universe and explained with 'trust me' to do right AFTER THE ELECTION. Sorry but I sure as hell am not going to 'trust' a professional money changer who has spent his entire business life exploiting every loophole and exception in tax and non-tax law for his own profit.

The fact Romney is a Mormon Bishop and LIES on just about any and every subject is what really is appalling to me.

And I suppose Obama's 20 year relationship with Rev Wright is ok. And then his turn your head the other way for Muslims...that's ok too. At least TRY to be fair.

No one should vote against Romney because he is Mormon. They should vote against Romney because he is an incompetent, stupid, spoiled brat who is totally clueless when it comes to any important issue.

These stories are icing on the cake....the man seems to not have any compassion at all.

If people are condeming Romney for his mormon religion, then you need to open your eyes and look at the study of Muslims, that is who our existing President is. I think I would take Mormon over Islamic any day of the week. Islamic is our biggest threat at this time, especially women.

I just posted a comment (actually a diatribe) where a lot of our members lambasted our President and (I think) decided that Romney and Ryan were better leaders than Obama. In this post, it seems that Care2 members have changed their minds. I still can't figure out why so many think that Obama was a Muslim just because his father was - but even so, to me, as long as he, or any citizen, practices his own faith and doesn't try to force it down the throats of other citizens. That's not what American freedom of religion is all about.

My own faith, if anyone cares, is a combination of my childhood Episcopalian faith; yoga and low-key Hinduism, AND New Age thought. My father once told my oldest son that in the United States, you could worship a mouse if that was what you believed. I doubt very seriously that Obama is trying to overthrow the doctrine of freedom of religion - but the two Republican candidates - well, I've said enough on the subject. Think about it!

I wish people would stop it with the misspellings! It's kind of annoying in an otherwise excellent article!

It's spelled "MORON" okay. Please spell it correctly and spread the word. Others around the world keeps misspelling that word.
