How Fox News Created a New Culture of Idiots

Assholes largely share a thick sense of moral entitlement. Just as hypocrisy is the homage that vice pays to virtue, late 19th and early 20th century businessmen like Cecil Rhodes, Albert Beveridge and John D. Rockefeller all felt a need to invoke...

Excellent article, thanks Carrie - and I do tend to think that Faux Noise does attract them - then make them even thicker and more prejudiced than they were before!

"The newer style of asshole is more disquieting because he is harder to pin down. His thinned-out and shifting rationalizations won’t necessarily settle into any particular sustained moral perspective that we can confidently identify and challenge as wrong. Instead, his sense of entitlement is mainly identifiable in functional terms, as the stable disposition to come up with some such rationalizations or other, as the situation requires."

Wonderful article, wickedly funny. And devastatingly true. I grew up in a different time, no cable, our news guys were Huntley and Brinkley, Cronkite and Edward R. Murrow. Serious men for serious times. Now we have ass clowns like Trump who are famous for being famous. The only thing the article missed was the radio version and I admit all I know of them is Rush. And all I know of him is the clips I see on the Last Word on MSNBC, with Rush waving his arms around wildly spewing insanity and saliva as he rants about whatever he is on about that moment. Fox isn't news, it is tabloid journalism on television, Rupert's creation and as much a caricature as he is. Empty suits masquerading as people. pthh...

Green star to Gene J - I remember those days, too, when the news was REALLY true news. Now the only place you can get factual news is on MSNBC!
Now, when I'm watching MSNBC and they show Rush sputtering and spewing his hatred...he is so makes me laugh! Really laugh!

I'm with Gene....grew up with news commentators who NEVER allowed personal opinion to enter into a news story...people with intelligence, articulate speech, honor and a commitment to TRUTH!

Fox "news" is an distorts the most basic principles of network news.

Unfortunately, far too many Americans are too ignorant to recognize it. (And before you begin waving your torches and flinging your pitchforks...."IGNORANT" means untaught.)

Noted...Gene, I'm sorry I'm out of green stars for you, but I love your comment!
I've gotten in the habit of calling them FuxNoise, and I never watch them either....get my clips from The Daily Show & Colbert....sometimes Bill Maher. As the pendulum swings, it will come back to knock them on their butts.

Self delusion is a key characteristic of the Faux News acolyte. Climate change is a case in point. They will continue to deny it's existence until it eats them.

FOX is not a news channel, but rather an opinion channel. A very Conservative and skewed opinion channel promoted by the GOP who have no concept or acceptance of anything that resembles truth.

Those who follow FOX are unable to think on their own and need reinforcement of their very narrow views of the world. People who are conservative and selfish by nature and uneducated in the ways of the world and society in its entirety.

How are the clowns from Fox any different from the rock star wannabes at CNN? The media is totally controlled by a small rich and powerful group of people; just as our politics are. There are many other independent sites on the internet to get news from. It is our responsibility not to drink the kool-aid; but to triangulate several sources in order to verify the conclusions; and to formulate our own conclusions and opinions.

I don't consider myself a Democrat. I AM a Liberal, or more accurately a Progressive. (I mean what's the opposite of progressive, stagnant? Regressive?). I'm not sure I agree with Aaron James tongue in cheek assertion that, well basically everybody, is an A hole, although it would be difficult to argue that point after watching the current political cycle unfold. There are many things the Republicans rant about which I agree with. However I feel the bulk of their arguments are short sighted and tunnel visioned. Having a huge house, a fancy car and gobs of money in the bank now won't do you much good if you can't breath or find food tomorrow. Or if those you are repressing rise up and go all French revolution on your wealthy butt.

Given that Fox news is known to occasionally continually pervert the English language in order to further its agenda. Then there is the December 2010 University of Maryland study which showed Fox News viewers aren't merely the most uninformed, but the most misinformed. Fox News always seems to exploit the mathematical illiteracy of the public by using graphs distorted beyond what mere incompetence could explain. Then there is the obvious fact that Fox tends to lean more to the right than a man who's just had his right leg blown off, so claiming they are fair and balanced is really just taking the piss.

Fox News IS unbalanced. Its owner, Rupert Murdoch, is a criminal, so why do people take his news network seriously? The people of Canada didn't want it and went to great lengths to ensure that Murdoch's garbage didn't pollute the Canadian airwaves. Could it be that they're more concerned about hearing the truth than U.S. citizens?

As always, Suzanne.....I think you've hit the proverbial nail on the proverbial head!

There's a large segment of our society which doesn't care if it hears really wants COMFORT!
