Victims of sexual assault in Washington, DC, are not getting the effective response they deserve and should expect from the district's Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), Human Rights Watch said in a report released today.

I doubt the DC is the only place to abuse the handling of sexual assault or rape. If the talk about rape was not enough during the election, we also have John Boehner's pledge to end abortion in the next two years. I think these people are stuck in the mind set that rape just doesn't really happen, and abortion is a casual choice. It's sad that some women are in the same mind set, but there are enough of us to overcome them. The police are essentially following the lead of leaders. Not doing their job.

With leaders like this who needs an enemy?

Very tragically RAPE is not taken seriously by many police departments. Victims are re-victimized if they file a complaint.
You are spot on Kit!
Thank you for posting Carrie.

"Since being notified of the report’s findings on May 30, 2012, the MPD has implemented a number of Human Rights Watch’s recommendations, undertaking policy changes to increase supervision of detectives. It has also added staff members to the sexual assault and victim services units. These are positive steps."

Some things never change do they? It isn't like this is the beginning, this has been going on since the first rape occurred whenever that might have been. There are nations that take this more seriously than ours and then those who stone the raped but not the rapist. We are so far from civilized that we bear more resemblance to our tree living relatives than those who will follow us by a thousand years. Or more. Every time this happens the victim is victimized twice, the second time as heinous as the first, perhaps more egregious because it is committed by the people she should be able to trust the most, the keepers of our legal system. Horrible commentary on the male half of the human race in both instances.
