Congress shamefully failed to work together to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) last year. This year, the new Congress must put partisanship aside and the rights of ALL women first.

"Congress shamefully failed to work together to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) last year."

LAST year the cowardly lions were allowed to get away with their no votes by using straw man arguments like those in the bill the House subsequently passed its own measure (omitting provisions of the Senate bill that would protect gay men, lesbians, American Indians living in reservations, and undocumented people who were victims of domestic violence). The two versions were never reconciled and so the bill never got to the President for signature.

What the ALCU had to say about this legislation "...VAWA is one of the most effective pieces of legislation enacted to end domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking. It has dramatically improved the law enforcement response to violence against women and has provided critical services necessary to support women in their struggle to overcome abusive situations."

So now the "fear" is that some in the LGBT community might fall under the protection of this Act and that, gasp, Tribal courts would have jurisdiction for non-tribal members captured on tribal lands after having violated this Act. Patently ridiculous and offensively racist and sexist. There is NO excuse for this bill not being reauthorized and law once more. People are more important than ideology and if the Congress is NOT there to protect all the people of this nation, then just what on earth are they good for? Besides posturing and making fools of themselves. THAT they are good at, but not much else. People before dollars, always. Such a simple rule it is a wonder republicans can't understand it.

From USAction / TrueMajority: BREAKING: Senate passes Violence Against Women Act!

This just in: the Senate passed the Violence Against Women Act, with no help from 22 Republican male Senators. This is great news, but the fight is far from over as the bill moves to the Republican-controlled House.

Last year, Republican obstructionists in Congress did the unthinkable. When the previously bipartisan Violence Against Women Act expired last September, they did everything in their power to stonewall its renewal, putting millions of women’s lives in jeopardy.

Why, you ask? Because the new version of VAWA would extend provisions to immigrant, Native American, and LGBT domestic violence victims with its full protections.

Will you send a message to your Representative, and demand an immediate renewal of the Violence Against Women Act today?

Sorry, unable to sign as street address could not be identified and needed a 9 digii postal code.
I wanted so much to be able to sign this petition as violence against women has been of great interest to me for many years. I hope it will go through the House, but with some of these republicans I wonder.
Thanks Carrie.
