The Washington Humane Society says it's "grateful" for the donation the Obamas made in honor of the arrival of their new pup, Sunny. In honor of Sunny's arrival, WHS will offer a 25 percent discount on all adoptions of an additional pet through August.

We own two rescue dogs, so quite obviously believe that is the best way to go. Most of you know that a little over a year ago we lost our 14 1/2 year old American Eskimo Dog. He was pure bred and I had delivered his litter. Even though he had had epilepsy since the age of 2 (two), and we spent a small fortune on meds and vet bills ~ he was a real little treasure. We always wanted another "Eskie", but there no rescue groups in this part of the country, so the only way to get one is to purchase. We couldn't and wouldn't do that, so we have a wonderful little mixed breed girl to keep our Zoe company and help us all mend our broken hearts. I would still love to have an Eskie some day, but I don't see it happening.

My point is when you fall in love with a dog ~ sometimes falling in love with the breed comes along also. If you have specific reasons, like acute allergy problems which eliminate many breeds ~ sometimes you do the unthinkable and buy a puppy. At least the Obama's made a donation to their local Humane Sociey which will benefit others. Regardless of their reasons ~ they did a good thing.

We lead by example and we learn from our peers, having said that hopefully a lot of people will have learned the lesson being taught from the Obama family. This is a great story and Sunny is beautiful, wishing Sunny and Bo a long healthy life. I do agree that dogs need to be in pairs and I to have two adopted shitzu's and love them to death. Thumbs up to the Obama family.

I'm so glad to hear of the Obama's donation It will go along way to help find homes for needy animals with lower cost adoption fees. What a great photo of the dogs here--I saw a video of them too---they're beautiful!~ Thanks so much Carrie!!!~

PS Dear Carrie, I am so sorry about your loss. When I lost my Golden Retriever, in 1996, I thought I would never recoup. 7 Months later, I rescued my precious "Simba," who I now miss more than I can say. I rescued my sweet "Tara," almost 5 years ago now---she is a sweetheart!!! Thanks so much again for this share!!!~

It's too bad the Obamas didn't actually rescue a dog though. It would be great to have a rescue dog in the White House.

it's a tough call, first you want homes for the animals but if people cant afford the adoption fee how are they planning to pay for food and vet services

I wonder how difficult it is to find a Portuguese Water Spaniel rescue ~ probably even more difficult than me trying to find and American Eskimo rescue in New Mexico. Just saying that falling in love with a breed and finding one for rescue doesn't always work out as planned.

From all I have read this is quite literally the "first dog" in all respects. It appears none of them ever had a dog before. I'm betting that because they got such an enchanting fellow in Bo ~ they needed another Portuguese Water Spaniel. It really sounds like they found the perfect little playmate for Bo and the rest of the family ~ especially Michelle and the girls.

Carrie, I'm so sorry you lost your beloved friend but, he will always be in your heart, because those we love are always with us.

I hope this discount on adoptions will help more animals find loving homes.

Sonny's so cute. I think the President and The First lady are getting ready to be empty nesters so they will get more pets as time goes by.

Carrie seems to be the only person here who realizes that there are such things as allergies. Come on, folks, the girls both have allergies, and if they don't react to Portugese Water Spaniels, then that's what they need to have. The donation I would call putting one's money where one's mouth is, and I am delighted to see it, and wish we could see more of it from our President (such as, both girls having allergies, they also need clean air, how about pushing that harder).
