The law, approved by the cabinet on Monday, is aimed at protecting people from "all forms of abuse" and offering them shelter as well as "social, psychological, and medical aid," according to its text.

It's a good first step but there's the bit - applying the law "will take time due to administrative delays." Curious to know what administrative delays can prevent a woman or child from getting abused...

Making a new law is one thing, but applying it is something different. Women have to face the policemen behind their desks if they want to have their abuser charged. And that may be a formidable obstacle for most women, as other countries in the region have shown. If the police doesn't cooperate and slows down the paperwork, the women can't go back to her abuser or she'll be in for more abuse. Getting the charges to court may be another story altogether.

I'm very curious to know how this law works out in a year or so.

I agree with Lona. Men simply don't respect women in Saudi Arabia --they treat them like possessions-- and it's hard to believe that men will enforce laws that give women the upper hand over a man --even if he is cruel and abusive.

I believe it when I see it. Just having it on a piece of paper does not mean it will work. But at least it is a start. Thank you.

Thats good news. Better than the news that the chemical weapons in Syria originated in Saudi Arabia.

We'll see how it goes. Usually, it's the woman that gets the dirty end of the stick.
