Sequestration, on top of other budget cuts over the years, has meant that nearly half of respondents to a new survey of 3,700 scientists have laid people off or expect to soon, while more than half have had a colleague who lost a job or expects to...

It is true that NIH now approves about %5 of the grants it is sent. That includes renewals. Many scientists are losing their livelihood. Many highly trained people are losing their josb. It is disheartening at least.

The GOP have succeeded in ruining the USA - all those research jobs will be going abroad - they have created a brain drain to other countries - probably mostly to China. What will the great Universities do without them? They will not be great any more, that's for sure.

If there ever was doubt about the US slowly losing its lead, this article takes it away. It's not only losing good scientists due to the brain drain Pat A. mentions, but also the chance of gaining the lead again soon, because the universities are loosing their good teachers as well as their researchers and no new generation is trained to follow in the footsteps of those that left. By that time the GOP/1% will pack up and go to China and India where new money is to be made.

It is indicative of our downfall. We value a 7 Foot Guy who can dunk a basketball more than someone who could be the next Tesla or Einstein.

It seems like our public education system is doing everything it can stomp out Critical Thinking Skills in our young people. And look where we are. Now we have new inventions like "Twerking" (Thanks to Miley Cyrus I now know what this is).

I do believe we are to bear witness to the "Fall of Rome", so to speak.

Does this mean that our country no longer gives a s--- about science? If so, the US of A is headed straight to Hades in a handbasket.

And the band played on.

Sequestration is very bizarre and the right wing across the world moves to downgrade the sciences. In Canada without a Sequestration, prime minister Harper is on a one man campaign to drag Canada back to the stone age with all of his ridiculous government cut backs.
