North Korea is often seen as something of a joke: a strange, secretive place in the grip of cartoon communism and under the thumb of crazed dictators. Rare glimpses behind the bamboo curtain fuel the fascination, with images of mass games, military...

With 1/3 of the world not-free.....we cannot be the world's police ....we already tried that and failed to change anything. (example) When we left NAM it became a tourist attraction.

It is not a joke for people who live there, unfortunately.

North Korea reminds me on Hitler times and the former Russia. I find them dangerous and scary.

A sad reality for the NK people..they are tortured, starved, can't speak out about anything, must worship them, they are far from a joke to their own people

It is often so easy to make fun of things that disturb us and dismiss them as 'something we cannot do anything about'. North Korea is a relatively small nation and something could be done. It seems that communism is not on the menu of ideological threats anymore. A few decades ago, communism was the global enemy and much effort and money was used to spy and attack those countries. These days mass media is telling us our enemy is now islam and thus effort and money is being spent spying and attacking those countries while the few remaining communist powers get away with murder, torture, brainwashing etc.

Similar to what's already going on in our own backyard, We should start there, strength in truth and be willing to stand behind those beliefs, helping other like-minded people whenever and however.

So far free, but weakened.

Don't understand - Who thought N Korea was just a joke?? Not, me, but then my stepdad fought in the Korean War, that wasn't a war but a police action...Lots of stories from these vets.

Noted. Thanks, Carrie. I lived in South Korea in 1973-74 for several months. My husband was in the US Air Force, sent there on an "unaccompanied tour" only weeks after our we had to live "on the economy" rather than a comfortable military base. By that time, it seemed many So. Koreans were more angry than afraid of the head of the N. Korean state. They were used to his outbursts, and it seems not much has really changed over the decades, from dictator to dictator.
While there are basically no "civil rights" in N. Korea, and prisons where people are tortured, the UN seems to be on track with what they are doing. In fact, if logic follows, the UN would have to also condone the US for its own torture. Getting harder & harder for us in the US to "call out" other countries after the long, horrible journey in attacking & invading other countries based on lies, as well as rendition, black sites & torture.
