Across the country, food banks that were already struggling to feed the millions of U.S. citizens who need nutritional assistance are now bracing for a surge in demand for help as deep cuts in the food stamp program take effect.

I wonder whether or not a revolution, hopefully at the voting booths next year, will not get started over this issue, in which so many people have been told, again, figuratively "Let them eat cake!"
Got to get those Rethugs out of congress!!

Over a million homeless kids and so lets help starve them and other children, elders and the disabled--increasing the costs to our society in exponential ways.

Should have reminded people that Bush the first claimed that charity and churches would pick up the slack of safety net programs cut or not increased to meet the need that never did happen and still doesn't as more money filters up to those who do not give and those who used to give now need to receive.

Shouldn't be unexpected. Next month will be worse as more cuts are taking mine.
Mitchell, as for cake, maybe then Michelle Obama will get involved and tell the people cake's unhealthy. The message there would be - eat nothing and lose weight...

GGma Sheila D. I know how you feel, having starved on a few occasions in my life. I am a pre-war, pre baby-boomer person and later I had the misfortune to be married to a gambler. Ever since I have had the greatest compassion for starving people and have spent lots of money, time and effort to help people in that situation.
It does make one distressed and angry to see people starving.
However, please leave Michelle Obama out of it. When she tried to address the problem of obesity in the USA, she was trying to help people with the problem of malnutrition. Neither she not the president are responsible for what the Koch brothers,, their tea party and the Ayn Rand besotted have inflicted on your country. They are psychopathic, extremely well funded bullies and the president has dome well to stand up to them to the extent that he has. Vote them out of power in Congress and see the improvements.

This is just numbing, to know that there will that many people suffering from malnutrition, especially children. The food banks haven't even been able to keep up.I am hoping that the President can find a way to bypass the Republicans and give to the people starving. A lot of members of the senate and freaking millionaires, and don't give a d...n.
Noted with disgust.

How many of those people are there due to globalization; outsourcing and Corporatization that began with Clinton and is now continuing to escalate? How long before Americans cede all their rights and freedoms to escape the stress and agony of these economic times? America is now feeling the burden and pressure of austerity economics. Canada isn't far behind either.

Starving the Children and Elderly is just unacceptable. I work for an organization that has a food bank and I am proud to say that from 9am to 5pm yesterday we raised $37 (by donation of customer's change only after they spending money in the store) Yes, this is not a huge amount but if the store did that everyday for a year we could help even more people than we do already. What the government is doing to the general public in my words is murder by starvation. My family, likes others struggle everyday to pay bills, fill the gas tank up, etc... We must vote out the people in government that don't give a damn about the children and elderly.

Feeding America says they would need to double what they get and do to make up the latest SNAP cut--and a further and bigger proposed cut is on the table.

Very sad news indeed. No one should go hungry, regardless of the reason. Thanks for the story.

This is what happens over time ... while greed slowly replaces need and despair slowly replaces hope. We all own a part of it through unawareness, lack of commitment and concern for other than self, etc. 'Nuf said ...
