Jennifer Castilleja told KTRK that she offered to come to the school Wednesday morning and pay for the breakfast but Barber Middle School in Dickinson ISD refused to feed her 12-year-old unless it got the money first.

I do not understand how anyone could do this to a child. And don't for one minute think that Texas is the only place that things like this are happening!

And y'all thought I was just pullin yer legs about how Baggers act down here. This isn't unusual but rather common....what's unusual is that it got reported in media. They ARE that callous and they ARE that frikken cruel. But they call themselves 'good Christians'........can I gag now.

Yes, the majority of TX has lost what brain cells it had and it's gone off the deep end. I loathe living here because of what these Fascist Fundys get away with. Disgusting. Just think what goes on in the classrooms and cafeterias around this state......depraved. I feel sorry for the kids who are treated this way.

For some children, a school lunch is the only meal they will get a day. What on earth is wrong with the school to humiliate and deprive the child like this? Noted and shared...thank you for posting this one Carrie...hope you are feeling well today! Peace, Light and Love.

As if closing all Planned Parenthood clinics isn't bad enough - now this! Texas may believe in protecting unborn children, but once they're here they don't give a [bleep]. Those creeps at Barber Middle School are cruel enough to make 99% of all movie, TV and comic book villains look like saints of unsullied compassion. All over thirty cents? PUH-LEEZE!

Pit-T-ful...NO excuses for such depraved indifference. I wish I had been standing there when this happened. I worked in the restaurant industry for years and watched cooks toss entire plates of incorrectly prepared meals or leftover specials at the end of the day, that didn't sell, right into the garbage instead of either feeding the staff or letting them take food home to their families. Our wastefulness is beyond over the top, its criminal.

There may be nice people from and living in Texas but so far I've only read about 10s of thousands of assholes. I would have to conclude that this is a representative sample.

Do any of these good Christians think "What would Jesus do?" Or do they give a damn! I think not.
Fundamentalists are just fundamentally twisted!!

Noted. Thanks, Carrie.
Reading this and thinking about that poor kid just brought tears to my eyes. 30 cents! Am I just a sap to say that I would've just taken it out of my own pocket? Of course, if this is a recurring thing, the parents need to be spoken to. Maybe they couldn't afford 30 cents and need to get him into a "free" lunch program.

When I was little, I forget my lunch and had no money. The school fed me anyway :) The next day I paid them back. We must learn to look out for the world's innocents. Speak out, step up.

how nice to have a school system who cares. not only was the kid hungry but then the poor kid was humiliated. Way to go Texas.

Isn;t it too bad they just didn't secede around the Civil War era when as they threatened/promised?

I lived in Texas for 5 years, including my own 6th grade year (albeit a few decades ago). And yes, much as I'd like to call this an aberration, much as I'd like to say that it usually isn't like this, that most people in Texas are kind and caring toward all people--well, I can't.

I'd have been surprised if this had happened in any *other* state, to be honest...

Now, Phil. Kit B lives there and she is a polar opposite of this disgusting behavior. And then there's Wendy Davis. I certainly grant Jeremy's experience and the point he makes, although Alabama and Missisippi come to mind as contenders. Frankly, it just sounds Republican to me.

This is outrageous. You do not let a child go hungry especially when the mother said she would come in and pay the $.30. Give me a break. Would they have gone broke without the $.30? This is just another example of the rotten state of affairs in Texas. Get rid of the idiots in charge and put in people who know what life is.

It might be a good thing when Texas leaves the United States since their inhumanity and general disgusting behavior is giving the rest of the nation a bad name.

Why wouldn't one of the workers simply give the child the thirty cents. I would have if I was there. But maybe there is a Texas law against that too.

I think "Nurse Ratched" needs to find another line of work --specifically one that doesn't require any level of human compassion. For 30 cents she made a child go hungry and let a perfectly good breakfast go to waste. I bet she's a big fan of Representative Louie Gohmert. They share the same level of sensitivity and similar IQs.

Had to know what to say, this is so appalling. How could anyone let a child go hungry, then throw the food away in front of them? The unpaid-for food was wasted anyway.

Signed and noted.
Methinks Barber Middle School is a good school to avoid if their behaviour over a 30c meal is anything to judge them by.
How on earth can people who are charged with the education of our children justify throwing a meal into the rubbish bin instead of letting the child eat it? Their behaviour sets a terrible example to the children and achieved nothing other than causing stress to an innocent child and totally wasting a meal.
The idiots who sanctioned that decision should be brought to book and severely sanctioned.

To those that feel we are all like this in TX (thanks my peeps for standing up for those of us who ARE NOT like this--I love yas) WE ARE NOT ALL BAGGERS OR FUNDYS DOWN HERE! There ARE real Progressives and dems here who really do care about animals, children, the old, the poor, the homeless, those who have nothing or even less than nothing. We are NOT all GOMERT'S, CRACKHEAD CRUZ'S, or Sieg Hiel PERRY'S. But, I DO have to agree with many, the MAJORITY of Texans ARE like this.
