Noted. How could they not know that it's not just the HSUS and ASPCA that is again the slaughter of horses. It is the super majority of American citizens. Close down all horse slaughter companies.

This link doesn't currently go to the article headline quoted above, but if the company in question has already been cited before for environmental degradation, they they should have no expectation of being granted any permit, ever!

I don't know what happened to the link, but this is what it says copied from "the Horse"

"The Valley Meat Co., fired the latest volley in the battle surrounding the opening of a horse processing plant in Roswell, N.M., this week when it sued New Mexico Attorney General Gary King for slander.

Horse slaughter has not taken place in the United States since 2007 when court rulings and legislation shuttered the last domestic processing plants. Prior to 2007, USDA personnel carried out inspections at horse processing plants until Congress voted to strip the USDA of funds to pay personnel conducting those inspections. In 2011, legislation reinstated USDA funding for U.S. horse processing plants and, in June 2013, Valley Meats Co. LLC in Roswell, N.M., received FSIS permit, which allows placement of personnel at the plant to carry out horsemeat inspections.

On Dec. 19, 2013, King filed a lawsuit in District Court in Santa Fe County seeking a temporary restraining order and an injunction against Valley Meats, preventing the firm from launching operations on Jan. 1 on grounds that the firm allegedly has a poor record of complying with state environmental rules. On Jan. 3 Judge Matthew Wilson extended hearing on the case to Jan. 13 in order to hear arguments from both sides.

On Jan. 6, Atty. Blair Dunn, who represents Valley Meats, sent a letter to the N.M. Department of General Services, Risk Management Division, announcing his intention to sue King for slander, libel, civil conspiracy, harassment, and malicious abuse of process.

“Mr. King’s conduct in this regard is ongoing and on top of damages for the harm perpetrated under these torts, we will be seeking equitable relief,” Dunn's letter said.

Rocky Unruh, of the Schiff Hardin law firm, responded by announcing the filing of his own motion to intervene "on behalf of four Roswell residents and Front Range Equine Rescue," his letter said.

Meanwhile, Phil Sisneros, King's director of communications, said the attorney general remains strongly against horse slaughter in New Mexico.

“It appears that this action by Mr. Dunn is simply an attempt to intimidate Attorney General King for acting to protect the state's interests,” Sisneros said.

The slander case remains pending."

According to an article from Nature on PBS:

"They gallop and trot, whinny and neigh, capturing our imagination — and our hearts. Indeed, horses are said to have done more to change human history than any other domestic animal, once upon a time carrying explorers to new frontiers and mighty armies to great conquests."

From "carrying explorers to new frontiers and mighty armies to great conquests," they're being herded to "horse processing plants" so that their flesh can be sold as food. We certainly know how to honor this noble species for its contributions to making America great. Corporate America has no loyalty, pride or shame. GREED is the vilest of the seven deadly sins.

Tell them to sue. We need to get the governments to start suing back. Everyday, someone is suing the government for their own personal greed. I will continue to fight opening slaughterhouses. We need to start making those that breed their horses responsible for the colts and kill off the livestock they don't want.

We also need to stop live transport across the country's borders. No horse should be taken to slaughterhouses in Canada and Mexico. The USA has a mentality that when we are done with something, we can just throw it away, but lives, all lives, including animals need to be treated with respect. All animals want to live as much as you and I do. They all have feelings. They know pain and joy. They depend on humans for their survival.

Thank you Carrie. Usually if a judge deems a suit frivolous the party bringing suit must pay all court costs. I hope this place never reopens. All horse slaughter is disgusting and is a product of overbreeding and the lack of horse owners to care for or humanely euthanize older or injured horses.

This is not a frivolous lawsuit. I could care less about Gary King's motives as described by the idiots filing this law suit. What is important is that we in this country do not accept the European notion that eating horses is somehow acceptable! We are above that kind of degenerate behavior!

Noted. Thanks Carrie. I believe Congress has signed into law, de-funding for horse slaughter inspections, which effectively halts horse slaughter plants from re-opening their gates of hell! This is, however, a temporary win. It is only good for this fiscal year, so, we all must keep working together to get the government to pass the SAFE ACT, ASAP!! That will stop American horses from going to slaughter, anywhere in this country, or being sold & shipped across borders to other countries like Canada or Mexico!

Thank you, Carrie, for the update. As you said, this is not a frivolous lawsuit and I hope they win, since there definitely has been slander, and libel as well, but that is also the case here in C2 with absolutely false and inaccurate comments made by writers here and from members who either do not understand the circumstances or believe that if the plants do not re-open, all cruelty and neglect will case to exist. That's like believing in the tooth fairy. Having legal options for those who don't want their horses anymore is just that.......providing another LEGAL option vs. either transporting over long distances or allowing a horse to die a slow and horrible death to starvation or neglect. Since slaughter has been illegal in this country, the increase in horses abandoned to die or just killed outright with a bullet by their owners has increased dramatically. If you want to believe that is not true, then do your homework........don't just believe what PETA says. It's their agenda to stop everyone from having even companion animals such as dogs and cats, let alone have larger animals such as horses that could "work" for their keep.
