An internal Army investigation into the episode concluded that the platoon suffered from lapses in discipline and security in the period before Sergeant Bergdahl disappeared into Paktika Province, two officials briefed on the report said.

yeah but come on carrie. where would you have put an idiot like Bergdahl who has a much better grasp of crochet than he has about being a soldier. would you have put him a a crack well oiled unit? you'll get your top and most expensive soldiers killed if you did that.

Justin, my youngest son is a career soldier ~ just made the number two spot the E-8 list this year ~ and I know what he would say ~ that type of unit should not even exist!

Noted. Thanks, Carrie. Seems like that surge in Afghanistan was indeed a bad idea.....I was against it myself. This is not the only unit that was a "mess" from what I've been reading.

Maybe this is getting news in the military world but this is totally being ignored in local news.

Pretty naked attempt to shift the blame from personal responsibility here and that's worse than a rush to judgement. Let the case play out and stand on its own merits. What you "report" is rumor at best.

a colleague of mine who is military had the following comment...."its not that he left, its that the others let him get lost"....i.e. where was the camaraderie, friendship, support, teamwork???

John G, I agree 100%. Bottom line....Bergdahl walked away not once but twice. No matter what he is a deserter. What others did in his platoon has absolutely nothing to do with the personal choices Bergdahl made for himself.

And of course Diane, since you were there and part of the unit ~ you know all the facts.

Actually it's the twice that makes it NOT desertion. Since he came back the first time, it could not possibly be proved he intended to stay gone the second time.
Also, no one has even attempted to answer this question: if the army had the faintest, most remote reason to believe he was AWOL, then WHY did they PROMOTE HIM TWICE, not once but twice, while he was in captivity?

This reminds me of the comedian who would say, "The Devil Made me do it, honey."

By the way, according to the Telegraph (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/northamerica/usa/10882800/Taliban-claim-Bowe-Bergdahl-played-football-with-captors.html)
the Taliban claim that Bergdahl played football with his his "captors", was supplied with fresh fruit and other food he asked for, and spent time reading books in English about Islam.

He sounds like a very disturbed young man, whose father was probably a few marbles loose, too. Is this the fault of Bowe's unit and a continuation of the irresponsibility/blame it on somebody else theme?

That's a routine military procedure.

No, I don't know all of the facts but the facts I do know clearly label Bergdahl a deserter. To swap 5 high level terrorists for him is way out of the park. This shows how grossly incompetent Obama is on just about every level of leadership. Obama never should've been elected in 2008. His own democrats are saying they have had enough of him.

Patricia, you nailed it! Many liberals in the US do not believe in personal responsibility. They believe when Americans make bad choices for themselves someone else is obligated to fix it....namely the taxpayers.

Bergdahl needs to be court marshaled like every other military deserter. We haven't had leadership in the US for a long time. The American people will do something about that in November and in 2016. Obama keeps breaking the law and he will have to face that as well.

Shame on the NYT's this is getting to be a habit of nothing. I will not label him, but why did he leave the unit without his gear in an unsafe land.
I did listen to his unit and they feel the same, why did he leave them without notice. It is a logical question

I think making excuses up and blaming others for something is as bad as complete condemnation of someone for something when we all lack the facts, or at least all the facts. Our assumptions and reasoning matter not here.

However, in this situation, I think trying to pass excuses or reasoning for this guy at the cost of the other soldiers who are speaking out or those in this unit is completely the wrong thing to do.

I also believe we let loose some people who we will more than likely here of or from again. Not in a warm fuzzy way either. Just my feeling on it.

So, Bergdahl didn't fit in. When young soldiers want to make a soldier disappear, they get the job done. Mark my word, This story is bigger than we think. It's the MIC in an illegal war.

Diane, many conservatives in this country lack compassion and believe in rushing to judgement before knowing all the facts, ~ especially if it can further their personal hatred and bigotry toward our Commander In Chief. I would say that is lacking personal responsibility.

Carrie, I would say those traits are not exclusive to any one group. You will find people like that in every demographic.

You have no facts to support that many conservatives in this country lack compassion and that they believe in rushing to judgement. I would consider that an emotional comment.

Give me one reason why Americans should respect Barack Obama. He was never presidential material. He was elected for all the wrong reasons IMO. Obama's own democrats have had enough of his lawlessness and lack of transparency. Obama stood before the American people and lied over 30 times that they would not lose their private health insurance and they lost it.

I feel the pain of the democrats who are now left with regret for voting for Obama. He is grossly incompetent and as others have stated, "he seems bored with being president." It shows and it has had a serious effect about the US presence around the world.

I just want Obama to take his family and leave in 2016. Enough is enough.

Thank you , Carrie for this post. And, Diane I voted for Obama twice and still admire him. I do not think he acts bored at all. In my opinion, he is a moderate and not at all incompetent! Can we agree to disagree?
