Throughout its over a century existence, the Scouts have promised to safeguard our children while providing leadership and life skills; instead, it has safeguarded pedophiles by not disclosing suspected molesters to the police. In fact, a Scouts policy...

BSA and Roman Catholics set great role models for hypocrites and other vermin.

After spending so many years of my life working this organization, I have yet to see this accusation proven as factual. I would be the first in line to help prosecute any one attempting to harm these young boys and early teens. In my experience the BSA leaders were all good, honest family men that would not be inappropriate in any way with the boys.

Could there be a few creeps out there? Of course, but time alone with a boy is almost fully impossible, unlike within the church. Time spent together is either outside playing sports, at camp where the boys work together with two or more adult guides or within the unit club house. My own son is both an Eagle Scout and Order of the Arrow, now as an adult he carries on a family tradition of Masonic charity.

For young boys to be successful scouts requires family involvement and mothers are often at meetings and even at the camp sites. Most boys give their earned rank to their mothers, because without their constant support the boys will not be fully successful. BSA helps young boys without fathers, and with Dad at home an opportunity to become responsible men.

I'm sorry, Kit, but you would never know if there was a sexual molester in your midst. Most of them are people who seem perfectly normal, family orientated individuals. For any organisation to fail to report those it knows have committed such offences to the police is absolutely disgraceful. Shame on them.

Noted and signed, most scout masters are genuine...but I have read about instances where the masters knew what was going on in some places and did not call police...I just read about their secret file on molesters they had dismissed, they fired them, only to have these "vermin" thank you Patrick :-) go and serve somewhere else with different scouts and repeat there crimes. If the first scout masters would have dealt with these guys properly in the beginning and called police, this petition would not be here today.

That is just not true. People do exhibit traits, interests and inappropriate behavior. The boys were well aware and told repeatedly to report anyone that made them feel in anyway uncomfortable. I didn't say it has never happened or could never happened, rather that if it has actually happened it is rare indeed. Mothers again, are very active and involved some times Dads as well. These boys are not left alone with grown men with sexual dysfunctions. Don't attempt to destroy a fine organization because of rumor and innuendo. We had one scout leader accused - once it went to court the 2 boys making the accusation laughed in court saying they found it funny to accuse this man. Be very cautious and protective of your children at all times but don't condemn an entire organization for crimes not committed.

"...will not share [information regarding molestation activity] with anyone and only wish him[the molester] to stop all Scouting activity”, according to a recently released Scouts policy memo from 1972."
Now, even though 1972 is not recent, they still would like to change this policy.

thnx, Nancy!

Anyone that is willing to protect a child molester regardless of what the situation was or is, should be placed in a prison cell right along with the child molester as I feel they are just as guilty.

I was a Scout. Because we moved from time to time, I was in a couple of different troops in two different states. I also worked at a Scout camp for two summers as well as went to camp for a few summers.

The closest I ever came to being abused was trying to drink coffee made by a cook from Ft Leonard Wood in Missouri. I have never like coffee since. OK, that really wasn't abuse; it was just that my 14 year old taste buds recoiled in horror at that foul, watery liquid.

Anyway, I did see a lot of really good adult and teen leaders work very hard to give scouts new skills and great adventures. I also saw that all adult leaders were not equal in their abilities. But I never saw one do anything that was inappropriate or out of line. That is not to say that it could not happen. As far as I observed, it did not in any of the councils that I was part of.

Send a Green Star to Kit B.
Sending a Green Star is a simple way to say "Thank you"
You cannot currently send a star to Kit because you have done so within the last week.

This is a very serious story. I was born into a life of incest/rape almost from birth so even the though brings back memories.
I agree with Kit's comments because of her personal experience/her deep insite and knowledge... AND... the fact that my BEST FRIEND of 35 (whom will remain nameless for privacy)~ brings up the BSA constantly. He speaks so gratefully for being a member. In any of a million situations he brings up such knowledge acquired from his experience as a Boy Scout. He actually went to his troop leader when he was being molested by a family member. I still can't get my friend to "share his feelings" after decades of friendship. If parents, teachers, friends/family were as aware that there was a problem with a kid and took action, as Tims troup leader....it sure would be a step in the right direction to cleaning up the UNSPEAKABLE abuse that runs rampant amongst our kids.

I must say that YES, there are "creeps" {as Kit shared}. And it would be IMPOSSIBLE to find any org. that was Perfect. Once again I HAVE TO QUOTE KIT: "Don't attempt to destroy a fine organization because of rumor and innuendo."
Please don't attack me as I will not be back to this thread.

Obviously this is bothering me because of my past. I would gladly go to prison as I would kill a pedofile with my hands if I saw a child in this situation. But I will not sign this petition.

ThankX Cathy...quite an article.

Noted and signed. I was just wondering, if it's all rumor and innuendo, wouldn't the BSA showing their records put this matter to rest? I guess what happened with the Catholic church, all those horrible abusers being moved from parish to parish and essentially being shield from prosecution for their crimes, makes me very leery of ANY organization or institution rumored to having sexual predators within their ranks. I respect, Kit's account, as SuSanne P.'s decision. I just want to make sure any organization receiving unwelcomed scrutiny is given the chance to show their records before an accusation is moved to the more costly civil or federal court.

Sadly, Esther the BSA is now a part of the United Way and they NEVER give out records.

As I said - that things may have or could have happened is always possible, just never in my personal knowledge has it happened. I still work with BSA and the Council. I thank them to this day for helping me teach my son real life skills. Skills that aided him in elementary, secondary and college life, skills he applies today. I do not condone any harm to any child, I just believe that BSA has far more positive then negative. The comparison to the Catholic church is really unfair, they knew with certainly for centuries what was happening and did nothing, now they blame the boys and girls. Should a Scout leader come under scrutiny he is not transferred away to another troop, he is out and prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

This smells more like a witch hunt, then a search for truth.

The Boy Scouts began as a FASCIST organization, historical fact. It is *no* surprise that they are protecting and enabling pedophiles within the continuum of the organizations awful beginnings.
