I don't even know what to say but ...How could anyone do such a thing? #SoSad :((

This is very sad. In particular it is the male that determines the sex of the child not the woman. Not that it should be a reason for anyone to be murdered. More education must take place in these villages, is the only way to stop this, or at least lessen it.

I am grateful the locals are standing up against the crime. The article said:

The Director for Kunduz Women's affairs, Nadira Gya, condemned the incident saying: "it was a brutal crime committed against an innocent woman".

Local religious and tribal elders in the district also condemned the killing, saying it was an act of ignorance, and calling it a crime against Islam, humanity and women.

Many women held responsible for the gender of their offspring have been murdered. In Western countries too. In England, Queen Anne Bolynne was beheaded for delivering a healthy girl and two still born sons. She was accused of high treason, incest, and adultery. But what she did was not give birth to a living son.

Kudos to the activist group who brought her murder to the attention of the media.
Surely, in this day and age, they are aware that the male carries two chromesomes, not the female.
Hopefully, they will find and punish (slow torturous death!) this man and his mother.

It is the ignorance in always blaming the woman for the baby's sex that perpetuates this misunderstanding.
BTW Bee Hive - Anne Boleyn was only married to Henry 8th for 16 months - she had one daughter and 2 miscarriages true - but that was not the reason for her being beheaded - she was constantly interfering in the politics of the day and ran afoul of Lord Thomas Cromwell - who poisoned Henry's mind against her.

Completely agree with Dandelion G - couldn't send you another star yet as the computer won't let me - sorry! Thanks for this terrible story Nancy - but at least the local civic and religious bodies called it a crime against humanity and Islam - but it will still take decades for education to teach people the true error of this woman's ways.

And we think that by our presence we can bring these people around to accepting our values and beliefs? You can only help or change someone that accepts that what they are doing is wrong, unfortunately I don't think they are yet at that juncture. How sad, thank you Nancy.

Thank you Cal, for publishing this story - which is acutely unfortunate but a a horrific practice against women and humanity in general and is prolific and widespread globally. Ignorance and illiteracy is the main root of these barbaric actions and in some Indian and Chinese cultures, getting rid of girls is a good thing. The very sad thing is that this archaic way of thinking and reacting is not going to stop anytime soon.

Which makes this story all the more poignant and is a warning to wake us all (living in the civilised world) to speak up for these voiceless young girls and take a stance to let the relevant authorities know that protection laws must be put in place to help those girls get out of hell here on earth.

Nancy would you be starting a petition to The Director for Kunduz Women's affairs, Nadira Gya, and Khanabad's police chief, Sufi Habib - to help push through (new) government an education reform on the values of women to Afghan society and execute both preventative and severe conviction measures - to at least avoid another wasted life and to bring the country to a civilised state?

Please do let me know if you start a petition - I will rally support for the petition all the way.

My prayer for strangled innocent Stori and all the abused, tortured, exploited and murdered victims

What a tragedy.

The awareness of women's equality and rights needs to be raised throughout the world and it can't be done quickly enough.

how cares what the woman had, as long as the baby is healthy, but unfortunate in this countries women don't have rights or a choice when the men rule, very sad to hear that, they need to stop being sexist.

" Local religious and tribal elders in the district also condemned the killing, saying it was an act of ignorance, and calling it a crime against Islam, humanity and women" Killing is not only a crime ,it is also a sin. There is no reason to justify killing. Blaming women for giving birth to a girl is ignorance that women are its victims. .

For once I agree with Abdesalam, this is an appalling act but it is not an unusual one. Another woman had her nose cut off and America brought her in for plastic surgery. On another occasion a new born baby girl In Pakistan suffered abuse from her father, he dropped acid into her ears, mouth and anus. There are many many such stories.

Other Muslims will use their little baby girls to pay off debts and the Hadith will tell the lucky paedophilic hubbies how to have sex and how to sexually abuse them. They could be married at a very young age, say 6, and forced to have sex. If Dad doesn't like something the daughter does then he will throw acid at her. If he doesn't like a Christian, he will do the same thing.

Then we come to honour killing because the daughter has been raped, usually by a member of her own family including her brothers, this often includes being buried alive. On other occasions they will be hung by a court or stoned to death whilst the male gets off scott free.

Then there is the legalized prostitution where they marry a girl to a man for a day or so.

Islam regards women as less than third class citizens, only useful for having children, preferably male. If pregnant they could be a suicide bomber. It is time that the West woke up to this appalling religion which uses and abuses women. They degrade women and gilrs and refuse to allow them medical treatment. They are not allowed to inherit and force them out onto the street into prostitution to survive and feed their children and them blame them.

Their behaviour is appalling, Sweden's police say that ALL RAPES are by Muslims. They attack and abuse Jews in Sweden and the Netherlands as well as other countries. They complain if someone criticizes Islam yet they will continually criticize Christianity, Jesus and Judaism.

The oppressive, patriarchal religionist culture of Afghanistan makes all Afghan women targets for violence. It is time for Afghan women to pick up their kitchen knives and their axes and whatever weapons they can find and defend themselves. Change will come when Afghan men are afraid to sleep at night.

The problem is that in such tribal societies Islam does not have a civilising influence since the local inhabitants may not be able to read the Quran, which is written in classical Arabic and local religious leaders do not
always inform them about the fact that nobody may take the law into their own hands. There is a body of Islamic law called Sharia and there are courts. There are also positive passages in the Quran on the treatment of women. Adherents of this faith are also expected to practice the virtue of mercy, one of the attributes of the deity in all three Abrahamic religions.
Personally; i fail to understand why the British taxpayers are paying to prop up the corrupt regime
of Karzai by providing direct aid after British troops are withdrawn. By all means let us provide humanitarian aid but it should be done exclusively through NGOs such as Medecins Sans Frontieres and others with proven track records who are transparent and open to inspection. Direct payments to the national government are in many cases diverted into the pockets of corrupt officials.

It's an agrarian society where sons are more valuable than daughters because of survival and acquisition of property via marriage where the male gets the property,

This case very sad- but not isolated. The Afghani women were better off when the atheist Russians were in charge and religious oppression was not allowed and women were educated and encouraged to work.

America's child like obsession with 'respecting' religion and multiculture is not helpful to humanity when it encourages turning a blind eye to oppression and abuse of human rights.

"In the present circumstances, no one can afford to assume that someone else
will solve their problems. Every individual has a responsibility to help guide our global family in the right direction. Good wishes are not sufficient; we must become actively engaged."-- His Holiness the Dalai Lama, from "The Path to Tranquility: Daily Wisdom",

"Better be unborn than untaught, for ignorance is the root of misfortune." - Plato

What Plato says is absolutely true in its own way. But if an individual cries for God realisation and the perfect manifestation of his inner divinity on earth, then he has to come into the world, no matter how abysmal his ignorance is. Ignorance is and may be the malady of today's life, but tomorrow's life can and must be otherwise. Tomorrow's life can be flooded with the soul's glowing Light. The life's journey has to start from where it is. The healthful hunger for the divine Light, more Light, infinite Light is not only today's necessity, but also tomorrow's inevitability. The Goal Supreme is neither behind us nor with us. It is ahead of us. It is in the Heart of the Beyond. The Goal is beckoning us. Let us walk, march, and run toward the Goal, We need not hesitate to go to our Goal. The Goal is ready and eager to embrace us with our ignorance. Once we are embraced by the Goal, what remains is to bathe in the Sea of our Goal's eternally infinite Light.

The only positive aspect I can find in this is that the community and religious leaders condemned this crime. I can only wish they would do so as well in so many other instances of violence against women.

It is hard to even conceive that this still continues to occur, but the sad truth is that as long as our "civilization"has determined that females are a worthless entity, not worth the food available to be fed or to provide any value to the family , these acts will continue. True education is needed that it is the male who determines sex. Contraception- yes, but if may not be allowed in many countries or by many cultures. That is where education is needed. So Why are the "pro- lifers" not outraged by this incident?
