Ban Assault Weapons ACTION

World  (tags: arms trade, world, guns, weapons, politics, law, violence )

Mass execution would not be possible without such high capacity weapons. How many people have to die before we ban those weapons? Close to 80000 signatures.

First let's get terminology correct here. What your calling assualt weapons are in fact only look alike assualt weapons because real assualt weapons are fully automatic machine guns like thoise used by our millitary and police. Assualt weapons and all other automatic weapons are allready banned and require special licensing to own. Second, the Clinton assualt weapon ban did nothing to reduce either the overall crime rate or mass killings. Every mass killing we have had recently has been in an area where the rights of legal law abiding citizens has been restricted or no protection has been provided where it should have been. This anti gun opportunism does nothing to stop murderous rampages. Taking away of guns from law abiding citizens does nothing to stop these kind of events and potentially forces the use of even deadlier explosives to be used. I would remind you all that the Wisconsin shooter did not use either an asualt weapon or high capacity mags. Think before you act, this kind of knee jerk over reaction does no one any good.

Time to read your constitution Doris, your ignorance of the "Bill of Rights" is unexcusable. Throughout most of our history the most advanced weaponry has been in the hands of civilians. Sharpshooters with rifled barrels brought their own guns to war through the Civil War and beyond. Machine guns were not outlawed for private citizens to own until the 1920 because of prohabition and it's gang activity.

Thanks Nancy. I've said it time and again there is no reason in the world why anybody would need tohave access to these types of weapons.

Welbec Hamm, obviously you love your guns and have no intention of signing the petition. This is not about taking away the right to bear arms completely, only restricting the type of guns people should have access to. As far as your argument that stated , "Taking away of guns from law abiding citizens does nothing to stop these kind of events and potentially forces the use of even deadlier explosives to be used." Nobody is forced to do anything unlawful. If these people feel so strongly about gun restrictions and feel they must use explosives for any reason then that's just proof they have no business having access to firearms to begin with and probably need to have a mental evaluation.

58 Murders a Year by Firearms in Britain, 8,775 in US

Number of Murders, United States, 2010: 12,996

Number of Murders by Firearms, US, 2010: 8,775

Number of Murders, Britain, 2011*: 638
(Since Britain's population is 1/5 that of US, this is equivalent to 3,095 US murders)

Number of Murders by firearms, Britain, 2011*: 58
(equivalent to 290 US murders)

Number of Murders by crossbow in Britain, 2011*: 2
(equivalent to 10 US murders).
For more on murder by firearms in Britain, see the BBC.

The international comparisons show conclusively that fewer gun owners per capita produce not only fewer murders by firearm, but fewer murders per capita overall. In the case of Britain, firearms murders are 30 times fewer than in the US per capita.

Do hunters really need semi-automatic AR-15 assault weapons? Is that how they roll in deer season? The US public doesn’t think so.

* British crime statistics are September to September, so 2011 is actually 2010-2011.

Ty, Nancy.

Sorry Jim but you don't get away with that stunt in my presence. Looking at only gun deaths and compairing us to a Socialist country with anti gun laws is ignorant. If you want to compair murder rates do it across the board per 100,000 of population then you are compairing apples to apples. What you will find is that Englands overall murder rate is about equal to our largest anti gun areas here in the USA, like New York City and LA. Taking guns away from law abiding citizens increases crime rates. You site 12,000 + murders by gun in the USA, more of our College students die every year binge drinking, many times more die by car accident. On top of that over a half Million people defend themselves effectively without killig anyone every year which reduces the overall murder rate. If you don't like the price of freedom your choice is clear, as I feel much safer in my world than your self serving utopia.

Toni A. show me such a gun dealer, that is an outright lie and you know it. Not even a street dealer would be stupid enough to sell any gun let alone an Ozzie look alike. A real Ozzie is illegal for the vast majority of gun dealers to even sell because it is a fully auto weapon not a semi atuo firearm and requires a totally different licsence. Get your facts straight people..

The NRA is one of the most corrupt, insane, and humanly oppressive organizations on the planet, and they're , well, the 'big guns' behind, the big civilian guns for the most part.
Magnifying the retarded rhetoric of pro-gunners, everyone should be walking around in full body armor and driving tanks....for the 'best' protection against those pesky criminals (until you come up against someone with a bigger tank of course)...
Most fanatical pro-gunners are paranoids.
As for the criminal argument, unless a person has a previous criminal record, no one is a criminal...until the moment they commit a crime. So that means everyone is a potential criminal that you 'have to protect yourself against'. Retarded logic.
The 'right to bear arms' was a quick way to muster armed farmers and civilians long ago in case of foreign attack (British). They didn't have to be official soldiers in other words. Creating a billion dollar gun industry from selling guns to the public since then and paranoia has produced the gun insanity of the U.S.A.

Welbec Hamm (1)
Friday August 10, 2012, 4:12 am
Kenneth L., The NRA is the worlds premier Gun Safety organization formed for that purpose. No other organization on the planet has done more to reduce firearms deaths than the NRA. The NRA didn't become involved in the second ammendment battle until the formation of the modern anti/gun movement, then did so in our self defense and at our request. As for the Rhetoric of progunners, it's called our constitution, and we will back it against socialists like you to our death. As for retarded rhetoric, read your own.

The use of fear to sell something is as old as human history. It's essentially extortion.
Regarding the gun insanity of the U.S.: : If you can scare someone enough, and you are touting your product as 'protecting' them, your product sales will go up. And the more people you can scare, the more your product sales will go up. And your product sales depend on keeping and maintaining enough people being scared enough.
Which is where the term 'Fear Merchant' comes in. Such individuals, and through the use of organizations, create fear and sell it and depend on it. They have a vested interest in it.

Welbec Hamm has no friends. He has a poor understanding of facts. He spells words incorrectly often.

The use of fear, and fear merchants, that is exactly what the anti gun side is doing, we are sticking to the facts. As for you Jim, if your going to call me a liar at least have the courtesy of telling us all what I lied about. As for bullying, who is trying to take my guns away. Which half of my statements are incorrect, as for misspelled words, anyone who belittles someones ideas over misspelled words is trying to cheat that person out of being heard. This is a blog not a letter to the editor butthead.

Welbes: please check some facts before writing your comments: Britain a socialist country? Where the hell did you find that one?

Just one more thing: nobody (that is: no one) fired back at the Aurora shooter to defend him/herself or the others in the cinema.

Welbec Hamm (1)
Friday August 10, 2012, 3:03 pm
ewoud k. yes I do call England, the home of Socialism, a Socialist Country with it's guilty until proven inocent criminal law. As for that statement about no one firing back at the Aurora shooter, you are correct, because no law abiding citizen was allowed to carry a concealed weapon in their theater. Worse than that after denying the public the right to self defence the owners of this theater provided no security protection to safegaurd them, the this has become the common denominator in many of these mass shootings. Read all the words not just the ones you want.

Pathetic Jim, you still fail to challenge my facts in any realistic fasion then call me pathetic. Emotioally based half truths and lies have fueled the anti/gun movement all my adult life and have become the only rhetoric available to a group desperate to turn public sentiment back in their minority favor. The last honest figures I have seen on this battle put the hardcores on both sides of this issue at about 18%. I suspect that has change only slightly, what has changed is the shift of the other 64% against more foolish top down government control. We don't have to speculate much as to the Socialist aspect of this since it has been enacted by virtually every socialist state on the planet as well as being promoted by their mouthpiece, the UN.

John Doe (22)

The second amendment is almost as idiotic as the US gun lobbyists More guns = more gun deaths. How can anyone be foolish enough to believe that assault weapons should be freely available to the general public? - Get real America, civilization is laughing at your outdated gun ownership laws..

Welbec Hamm (1)

It's easy to make stupid statements when you hide behind ananimity John Doe. If you don't like our Bill of Rights you are welcome to move to any antigun socialist country of your choice. By the way the statistical data absolutely does not back up your lie that more guns eqauls more deaths. Second we do not sell assualt rifles we sell look alike assualt weapons. Third I don't give a rats backside what socialists are laughing at, our gun ownership laws are just as realavent today as they were when they were enacted. Statistics indicate that for every person killed by a gun, nearly 100 defend themselves with guns without killing anyone. If you can;t stand FREEDOM leave.
