The most fundamental of civil rights -- the right to life -- was violated the night George Zimmerman stalked and then took the life of Trayvon Martin.

We can still seek justice for Trayvon Martin

A jury in Sanford, Florida, has found George Zimmerman not guilty of murdering Trayvon Martin.

It is appalling that a teenager’s life was taken in cold blood, and there is no accountability for the man who killed him. But we can turn our outrage, anger, and heartbreak into action. We can still seek justice for Trayvon.

Join me in signing the NAACP's petition to the Department of Justice asking them to file civil rights charges against George Zimmerman:

http://www.naacp.org/DOJ-petition

Thank you.

S & N, thanks, my friend. I watched the trial. I don't know why the prosecutor didn't hammer home the testimony of the girl he was talking to on the phone at the time of the encounter. Travon M. told her that someone was following him (every kid's nightmare) and then she heard him ask "Why you following me?" and then she heard a thud and him saying "get off me, get off me". It doesn't take a genius to figure out what was happening. Apparently the jury forgot that part of the trial.

I'd send Nancy a Green Star for this one, but I've already sent one today. Justice needs to be served. If the charges against Zimmerman were not sufficiently proven, then re-examine the charges. He MUST be held accountable for blatant civil rights violations!

Noted and signed. I hope the FBI will find enough and compelling evidence to file a case against Zimmerman. Also, the parents can pursue a case and hit Zimmerman with a jury award. The not guilty sentence is a sham, but what can you expect from a jury, some of whom are gun owners, and come from a very conservative, red, district!

Only in America (well not necessarily I suppose), someone can be walking along, who has committed no crime, is then shot dead by a person who confronts him, in 'self-defense', who is then found innocent of any wrongdoing. Who paid the price? The person who was walking along, having committed no crime.

The liberals have a big elephant in the room on the civil rights possibility. The President of the United States stated publicly to the American people early in this case "if I had a son he would look like Trayvon." Ouch....that had blatant racial overtones. When will Obama start to act presidential? Early in his presidency he had to call a "beer summit." Now, why was that? He opened his mouth publicly with his personal opinions and then had to back pedal. But let's not stop there let's move back......he also had to call Nancy Reagan for an insensitive comment he made about Ronald Reagan......but, no, let's not stop there.....he also had to call Timothy Shriver about an insensitive comment about the special Olympics.

So, suffice this to say, that the DOJ is going to have a really hard time bringing this case forward because of Obama's comment. It's on video. It's out there and it will be utilized.

The jury of six found Zimmerman not guilty because they didn't have sufficient evidence to charge him with murder. What part of that don't YOU understand? It's right up there with OJ Simpson killing his white wife and an innocent white friend of hers.

There are black youths murdering other black youths in Chicago every SINGLE day so where is your outrage there? Do the liberals need to have a white person involved in a situation like this to make it meaningful to them so that they can pull out the race card? Why aren't you outraged with a city that has the strictest gun laws in their city on the daily murders that occur there? Don't have a white person involved? Is that the common denominator you need to make it worthy of front page news?

Thanks for taking action! Trayvons parents hearts must be very heavy if they were not enough already.

Diane O (194)
Sunday July 14, 2013, 5:14 pm
I would think that all Americans INCLUDING MR. AND MRS. OBAMA would be more than concerned about the black youth crime in our country. Why aren't they stepping forward about this? Or....are they, too, only interested when there's an Hispanic man involved in the death of a young black youth or more importantly, a white person who shoots a black person?

The black community was rejoicing, dancing in the streets when OJ was found not guilty for shooting his white wife and her white friend. Where's the outrage there?

You people need to get in touch with your common sense and reacquaint yourself with it if you can find it.

Diane O (194)
Sunday July 14, 2013, 5:18 pm
I'm certain that George Zimmerman's family had heavy hearts as well. This type of situation is hard on both sides of the aisle. He was found not guilty. As a man who has been deemed not guilty by a jury of his peers what he has been through has also been monumental and it has virtually ruined his life.

Diane O (194)
Sunday July 14, 2013, 5:25 pm
Because that is their home town. The majority of the youth crime in OUR country is in the black community. Now, you may want to make that a racist statistic but you cannot change the demographics or the statistics. Not even you can change or even attempt to alter the truth. The fact is this....young black males are murdering other young black males at a record number in Chicago. That's a big problem. Wouldn't you say so or would you rather stay stuck on denial of a hard core fact?

You can pull the race card anytime you like but when you do you unveil yourself as a person without a retort to the facts. Yep, pull that race card out when you have nothing worthwhile to contribute to a conversation.

Zimmerman is now a free man but in name only. He'll have to watch his back I am certain. The prosecution failed Martin and essentially ended up putting this young man on trial instead of Zimmerman,

@ Diane O - Can you comment on anything without bringing up us "liberals" and President Obama and his wife? Your racial overtones are screaming on this site, be quiet!

@Diane O., yelling about others playing 'the race card'. Yet the first thing out of your mouth is accusing Obama of 'blatant racial overtones' regarding his comment about Trayvon. Obviously where YOU only see the skin color of Martin and Obama, others may see simply facial features or other qualities. You need to get a life other than being a fanatical Obama hater..

DIANE 0 -
I DON'T NORMALLY DO THIS, IN YOUR CASE I WILL MAKE AN EXCEPTION -
PLEASE READ CAREFULLY. I WILL NOT ASK, HOWEVER, WHAT PART OF THE FOLLOWING YOU DO NOT UNDERSTAND...
bigotry and bias have many faces.
FIRST OF ALL , THE JUDGE REFUSED TO ADMIT CRUCIAL EVIDENCE INTO THE COURT - THE AUDIOTAPES, WITH THE CRIES FOR HELP WERE MENTIONED, YES.
bUT THE WOMAN JUDGE, REFUSED TO ALLOW AUDIOEXPERTS. THIS IS UNCONSCIONABLE. THERE AND THEN, ANOTHER JUDGE SHOULD HAVE BEEN DEMANDED.
THIS WAS TANTAMOUNT TO "TAMPERING" WITH THE EVIDENCE.
ON THE BASIS OF THIS , ALONE, THE TRIAL WAS A MISCARRIAGE OF JUSTICE, IN THAT CRUCIAL, AVAILABLE EVIDENCE WAS DENIED AND SUPPRESSED.
SECONDLY, THE JURY, ALL WHITE FEMALES, EXCEPT ONE - DID NOT REPRESENT THE GENERAL POPULATION STATISTICS AND THEREFORE, WAS NOT A JURY OF "PEERS" AS STIPULATED THE COURT SHOULD BE PROVIDING.
NOW -- HOW THIS FIASCO TOOK PLACE, IS CLEAR TO ME. THIS HAS HAPPENED BEFORE IN LEGAL INEQUITIES ACROSS DIFFERENT STATES FOR DECADES!!! TO PEOPLE OF ALL BACKGROUNDS!
REGARDING YOUR OFFENSIVE COMMENTS ABOVE, I BELIEVE TO BE DISCRIMINATORY IN NATURE, OR AT LEAST MISGUIDED - THERE IS ALWAYS (IN ANY COUNTRY) MORE CRIME IN THE MORE UNDERSERVED POPULATIONS OF SOCIETY, WHETHER THAT BE, HERE OR ANYWHERE.
THIS IS A TREND, BUT IT DOES NOT IMPLY OR EQUATE IMPOVERISHED PEOPLE WITH CRIME, OR THE LOWER INCOME EARNERS WITH GUN OWNERSHIP OR MURDERS/VIOLENCE.
THIS IS WHAT IS CALLED "PROFILING" - SINGLING OUT A GROUP OF PEOPLE AND LABELING THEM - HITLER, FOR ONE, DID THAT. AND THERE ARE MANY OTHERS.

BULLIES DO SOMETHING VERY SIMILAR, IN FACT - THE DYNAMIC, IS LOW SELF ESTEEM AND MARGINALIZING OF OTHERS, TO FEEL A SEMSE OF POWER OVER, OR CONTROL.

I ENJOY HELPING IN SOME SMALL WAY , ON THIS SITE. I DON'T COME TO SPARK DEBATES, OR ANSWER IGNORANT COMMENTS, OR DEFINE THEM AS SUCH.

I WILL SPEAK OUT, HOWEVER, WHEN I SEE GROSS DENIAL AND UNRESERVED MISCONCEPTIONS, OR OUTRIGHT LIES.

THE BIG "CRIMES" OF SOCIETY ARE ALWAYS LINKED TO THE HISTORY, HEALTH AND DISEASES, OF THE UNDERLYING CULTURE, CURRENT AND PAST GENERAL ATTITUDES, PRESUMPTIONS, AND MISTAKES OF IT'S PEOPLE, AND ADMINISTRATIONS - FROM TOP TO BOTTOM, INCLUDING, FOREMOST - NOWADAYS, AND IN THE PAST - THOSE THAT CONTROL THE MEDIA, AND THE POWER BROKERS, WHO ARE BHIND ELECTIONS AND LAW MAKING AND BREAKING.

THE CORRUPT ARE THE MOST VIOLENT ELEMENT IN SOCIETY. AND THE PHYSICAL AND OTHER FORMS OF VIOLENCE, AND PATHOLOGYIES, ARE NOT ALL ORGANIC. THEY STEM FROM POVERTY, INJUSTICE AND THE RESULT OF WEALTHY ELEMENTS OF SOCIETY OFTEN ABUSING, AND TAKING ADVANTAGE OF OTHERS, IN LESSER CIRCUMSTANCES.
THAT IS HISTORY.
IT IS WRONG TO CLASSIFY ONE GROUP AS THE DOMINANT FORCE OF VIOLENCE IN AMERICA!!!

JUST AS IT WOULD BE WRONG TO BLAME KIDS FOR TEEN SUICIDE, OR ANYTHING ELSE, WITHOUT COVERING THE RELATED ASSOCIATED FACTORS.

ADULTS, ARE, NONE THELESS RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR BEHAVIORS, WORDS, AND CRIMES - ZIMMERMAN WILL BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE! WITH, OR WITHOUT, THE TACIT DISAPPROVAL, OR SUPPORT FROM ANY BIGOTED, DELUDED, OR HYPOCRITICAL RIGHTEOUS FOLK - "OUT THERE".

MAY YOU ENJOY YOUR FREEDOM, WHILST REMEMBERING WE ARE NOT ALL FREE, HERE, WHITE, BLACK OR WHATEVER OTHER SKIN TONE ANYONE CHOOSES TO USE.
P.S. I AM A PERSON, FIRST - A MOTHER SECOND - "WHITE" SOMEWHERE DOWN THE LIST.

FOR OTHERS "BLACK" OFTEN IS ONE OF THE FIRST MENTIONABLES - PEOPLE JUST AS EASILY SAY WHITE.
NO ONE IS PLAYING ANY RACE CARD, HOWEVER. THERE IS MUCH , THE PUBLIC NEITHER SEES OR IS TOLD.
ENOUGH OF THIS - IGNORANCE AND FEAR ARE DIVISIVE, AND SERVE THE PURPOSE OF THOSE, MANY NEVER SUSPECT.

Diane is so wrong again.. Whites Commit More Crimes Than Blacks, FBI Says -
www.ethicsdaily.com/news.php?viewStory=6384
.What is black. Is it when you are only half-black....one quarter black or have a black person way back in your ancestry that you aren't even aware of.
What matters is that we have too many guns and the fact that we have young children who are at an early age learning to be addicted to using firearms. So addicted it's become an obsession for many to own as many guns as possible. So addicted, they carry a pistol in a holster like Zimmerman did ....and not as jewelry but with the intentions of USING IT.

There is an article on AlterNet about one of the jurors having a book deal in the making on this trial. That is wrong on so many levels and should lead to a mistrial when this juror had a vested interest to find this killer not guilty. See here:

I think Zimmerman was in a really BAD mood that night. He should have stayed home until he could "see straight" as my Mom used to put it,

I see no reason why Zimmerman had to shoot to kill a teenage boy who was doing no harm. He was just being a youngster. As we look in his face we see innocence.

The POTUS should NEVER voice his personal opinion publicly. Never. Yet, Obama did. He stated that "if I had a son he would look like Trayvon." Obama's words not mine. At that very moment, Obama set the tone.

You need to remember that Obama's mouth got him into trouble before. He had a beer summit to apologize for his comments in the Boston situation. Then he had to pick up the phone and apologize for an insensitive remark he made about Ronald Reagan. And then he had to call Timothy Shriver and apologize AGAIN for making a very sensitive comment about the Special Olympics. I don't make these things up. This is at Obama's feet.

Yes, Obama set the tone and the black community began salivating that they could show this as racist.

That "teenage boy" beat the crap out of Zimmerman....attacked him. The jury knows this. We read in the media everyday where "youngsters" think Boston Marathon bombings where "youngsters" killed and took the limbs off of innocent Americans.

Think through what you are about to say......and when you do think about the "young people" who live to kill other people. We have plenty of examples of how deadly youngsters can be....check out the schools where innocent children have been gunned down.

It appears that the victim of this assault has the reasons to file the civil case. Zimmerman never should've been charged because there simply wasn't enough evidence to move forward. The verdict proves it.

The NAACP - The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. I would think in this day and time that our country has put many laws and grants in place for every African American to achieve and soar. However, it takes a desire to want to achieve. We have an African American president who took advantage of affirmative action and got a law degree. He is not the only one. There are thousands and thousands of African Americans who are very accomplished in our country. It takes hard work. It takes hard work for non African Americans in our country. It always comes down to a personal choice. We are judged on our personal choices in America no matter what color your skin is. The Hispanic community are workers and they want to be educated and self supporting. They immigrate to the US for a better life for themselves and their children. The same holds true for the Asian community. You never hear of the Hispanic and Asian communities blaming anyone for anything. People of all races can blame others for their lack of drive to become better but at the beginning of every day and at the end of every day they can't blame anyone but themselves if they have failed to attain their dreams. I will always add that this does not apply to our disabled Americans who through no fault of their own find themselves unable to achieve their lifelong dreams to be self supporting. If our government would clean up the $60 billion a year in fraud and abuse in our social programs we could actually lift up the disabled with significant cost of living raises because they deserve it and need it to survive. However our government won't spend anytime on helping the real people who need a helping hand up. They just keep sending out taxpayer funded checks to those who are actually milking the system for all it is worth. If we would elect a president who campaigns on attacking and cleaning up the $60 billion in fraud and abuse in our country, we could turn the corner on poverty for many deserving Americans who need our help. This topic will always bother me until we elect someone who actually finds it important to address.

Diane O. "The POTUS should NEVER voice his personal opinion publicly. Never" Really? Says who? lol Lots of times when a tragedy occurs lots of pres. have stated their personal feelings, whether sorrow of sorrow or outrage etc, as well as TONS of their personal opinions during various speeches during their terms about lots of things So wrong again, you.twist everything Obama does into something bad.

Diane O (194)

Says protocol, Ken. Because when a president does that he is "leading" American citizens into thinking his way which, as we know with Obama, can be wrong most of the time.

What part of he had to make three apologies since being elected for making insensitive personal comments is hard for you to process?

Kenneth L (314)
Wednesday July 17, 2013, 7:41 am
Every time a POTUS gives a state of the union address or any talk to some group, whenever he says 'I believe blah blah blah this or that about the economy or what needs to be done to pull this country together blah blah blah", or 'we need change and this is what we need to do' that's his PERSONAL OPINION. What do you think, it's fact? LOL. Ask his opponents if it's 'fact'. They have their own PERSONAL OPINIONS about those things.
You are simply obsessed with hating Obama. Fixated on it. I beginning to think you're a racist pure and simple, one of the big reasons you don't like him is he's black.
Which is why you never addressed your blather about his 'blatant racial overtones' regarding his comment about Martin. You only saw their skin color. Other people see facial features and other qualities.

You're the same one who made a big deal out of his wife forgetting herself and lightly touching the Queen. Oh how BAD that was eh Diane!
You are engaged in the oldest trick in the book---if you don't have something bad about someone, INVENT it and phrase it, formulate it in any way possible to make the person look bad.

Diane O (194)
Wednesday July 17, 2013, 3:05 pm
No, that wasn't me who made a big deal out of Michelle touching the queen. I made a big deal out of Obama giving her an ipod with all of his speeches downloaded on it. That, to me, was far worse than Michelle touching anyone.

Yes, presidents have their own personal opinions. But they don't take sides in a controversial issue. Obama doesn't have the polish he needs to be presidential.

You are welcome to your personal opinions and so am I.

Diane O (194)

This is all political grandstanding for the 2016 election. Now Hillary is out there disagreeing with the verdict and why? Why would she do that? Because she KNOWS she needs the black vote in 2016.

Get a clue, Ken.

Kenneth L (314)
Monday July 22, 2013, 5:42 am
No, I'm sure it WAS you. If I was really that interested in it, I'd go back and find it.
Me get a clue? you say 'Obama doesn't have the polish he needs to be presidential". But he IS the president! He's even been RE-ELECTED as the president a second time! Where does that put YOU? In the loser category. I imagine you'll be ragging about him not having 'polish to be presidential' up to his second last day in office LOL! On his last day you'll be 'feeling victorious' because you 'won'. LOL! You sure fight battles in a strange and weird way.
