Almost all of the food stamp cuts come from 16 states and the District of Columbia--the rest of the nation is left virtually untouched.

SNAP: The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as the Food Stamp program, provides food-purchasing assistance for low- and no-income people living in the U.S. It is a federal aid program, administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, under the Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) Administration, though benefits are distributed by each U.S. state's Division of Social Services or Children and Family Services.

SNAP is the largest nutrition assistance program and is estimated to have served more than 40 million low income Americans per year in recent years. ...

Income Requirements

For income, individuals and households may qualify for benefits if they earn a gross monthly income that is 130% (or less) of the federal poverty level for a specific household size. For example: the SNAP-eligible gross monthly income is $1,245 or less for an individual. For a household of 4, the SNAP eligible gross monthly income is $2,552 or less. Your gross monthly income is the amount you make each month before any deductions, i.e. taxes, insurance, pensions, etc

A summary statistical report indicated that an average of 47.6 million people used the program in FY 2013...
As of 2013, more than 15% of the U.S. population receive food assistance, and more than 20% in Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oregon and Tennessee. Washington D.C. was the highest share of the population to receive food assistance at over 23%

MN is known for being Democratic - except for the occassional big lapse in judgment like M Bachman...still trying to live that one down. I got emails from my three Congress people, all Democrats - two Senators & one Representative. Each one was excited about the new farm bill after four long, evidently hard and hot, years of wrangling.
Not one word about the SNAP cuts. SNAP is a federal program. How do they get to select which states will have their SNAP cut - usually it's across the board cuts. Strange that a federally funded program will be so very selective...or will it be in all 50 states and we just aren't being told about it...
Getting sick & tired of revising an almost nonexistant budget every time our wonderful Congress cuts us down. It's at the point for many of us that there's nothing left to cut down.
Sent emails, and mesages to MN Senators and the Rep...what aren't we back in MN being told about this latest round of SNAP cuts. Think they're all getting a bit tired of me by now. But this affects way too many people, including myself.
Thanks for the info David...I need about $400 to get to that individual level...Sigh.

What is this the civil war again. Stop pitting the poor of the south against the poor of the north and west. No more cuts to the poor. I'm tired of the poor paying for the wealthy to continue to live too high on the hog.

"It seems utterly psychotic to live in a society that chooses to spread poverty to its young." Les Leopold Executive Director of the Labor Institute New York

"It also seems psychotic that cuts to Food Stamps are also good for the poor while at the same time saying that it's OK for billionaires to pile up unearned, tax sheltered income. The fact that we are putting up with all of this should be driving us all insane." Les Leopold

There was a petition on care2 called "PASS THE FARM BILL!" and 14,000 people signed it. I was appalled that it was on the site, and also that so many of my friends names were on that petition. Worked hard against that farm bill. Cutting food stamps, giving away billions to big farm corporations and had petitioned congress so many times saying that it needed to be passed CLEAN with no riders, or removed. NO FARM BILL. Well, people got what they asked for and I am really sad and sick about it.

look at the LIES this petition is spewing!
America's family farmers and ranchers — whether selling fresh tomatoes at the city farmers markets or enlivening rural economies with jobs — are the bedrock of many communities that members of Congress call home.

The Farm Bill presents a tremendous opportunity to revive programs that help keep farmers on the land, ensuring communities remain strong and healthy. At the end of the day, it's not farmland without farmers.

The Farm Bill includes programs that promote farmers markets, support local foods and help beginning farmers. But bitter politics and budget cutting posturing overtook the Farm Bill process and now many of these programs are currently without authorization or funding, leaving stranded farmers and communities that rely on them.

Time is short. Tell Congress to pass a new Farm Bill and protect America's farmers and ranchers.

Perhaps the blue states have been too "generous" (or perhaps we should say wasteful) in the administration of the SNAP program (and how many other programs).

People living in those blue states should really take notice of the Democrats in those states who have voted for the Farm bill. They obviously haven't been paying attention and aren't worth the salaries they get.

If you live in one of these 16 states, sign and send our petition to your senators—urging them to reject the Farm Bill when it comes to a vote on the Senate floor.

Unfortunately, I cannot sign this, i live in a deep red state that doesn't give a rat's southern end about people in general let alone people on food stamps.....we are all on our own in this state.

S+N -- My own scenario works out very slowly, since my SNAP was discontinued as of last September due to a "bureaucratic error" (?!) - I think it was purposely done and the entire fiasco since has been BS! But, then again - I'm angry about it, since I had surgery during the summer which prevented me from recertifying by mail, and I had to go to a very distant facility to reinstate, now they claim I never went there and they have no record of it and "did I get a receipt"? A RECEIPT? Well since my SNAP was discontinued I've been trying to save to renew my license - which now presents the "catch 22" to my story - because without SNAP the money to change my license and pay full price on food in NYC - has made it very difficult - finally got the license on Feb1st! Now I have to go to another remote facility in Harlem to renew my SNAP - hurdle one is over, but I will not make the same mistake, I'll get a notarized copy of the fact that I was there (whenever I can make it up there) - not easy for a disabled "victim"!
So yes my saga goes on - and of course I signed! Thanks for the post!

Roxy, this is what happens on petitions when so many do not FULLY understand what they are signing. People need to do a little bit of educating of issues, is how so many scumbags got into office. Anyways my name is not on the petition either.

Lee you are not the only one in this circumstance, my daughter has had this run around every time her review of the Food Stamps come up. There is NO office, not even long distance to go to. There was a little office for a few years with a single woman who sat at the desk and could do NOTHING for you. There was a locked box one could drop verification forms into, use the phone to call someone in the Capital, or use their computers to apply. She couldn't answer any questions for you, she could only say, there is the phone, computer, drop box.

Now even that is gone, so one must use the library computers and if you can't get a library card you are toast for you can't get a library card unless you can prove you are a resident, and many homeless can't prove that. My daughter has been on the phone for days trying to get someone to pick up the phone, because if you leave a message no one ever gets back to you. Never ever gets back. If you do everything via the computer there is no room for grey areas......it is either this or that.

She has mailed in the same verification over and over again, they don't have it, must of gotten lost in the mail or they just hang the phone up on her when she tries to explain she has sent it 3 times already. Meanwhile time marches on, she has a child, and that doesn't seem to motivate them either.

The Food Pantry offers little now in the way of help, too many people needing help, and a lot of people with the same complaints go there saying the same thing. Which is we are eligible for Food Stamps but we can't get the issue or problem fixed! We can't talk to anyone, we can't reach anyone, they loose our papers, I have no more money to fax them, mail them, call them, and I've no computer to reach them. And when I do call them still the issues drags on. One time my daughter went 9 MONTHS for the people to fix her problem that THEY CAUSED. They had misread a form that was sent in and used her monthly income as weekly income......so she was denied.

I'm trying to feed the 3 of us when this happens and that means that my small income now must stretch a bit further, the soup gets a little thinner with adding some extra water. So just because you are eligible for Food Stamps doesn't even mean you will get them.......these States have made it darn near impossible to get onto a program set up to help the most needy. Sort of like the Roe vs Wade, that is the law of the land, but if there is no place to utilize that right to a medical procedure it is the same as not having that right. If there is a program to help hunger, but they make it harder and harder to obtain that help, it's like it isn't there at all.

Noted but would not accept my zip. This is such a terrible situation for so many people, it sickens me to think how many people have been duped by the farm bill. Food banks are running out of food as soon as they get it, and I feel now is the time to make the 1% rich to pay taxes, witch may help the SNAP program. While trying to let on that there was no real recession, people go hungry - is that not what happens when there is a recession??? I can't even imagine what it would be like to not have enough for food. I am a Canadian Senior, and so far the pensions haven't come to any harm., so I consider that I am really luck compared to so many others. Thank You Nancy.

Well, I signed the petition back on September 03, 2013...that was before I knew it was going to include SNAP cuts. Since finding out abot cuts, have been posting comments and signing petitions against it everywhere I can find, even voted and commented on PopVox. Evidentl this was one of those I signed without reading the entire thing. Sigh! (doing alot of that today)...
