As we accelerate our efforts demanding that state governments oppose and repeal "Shoot First", we'll also urge federal officials to investigate how these laws protect and embolden those who commit hate crimes.

Step by step the power/money people are taking away our right to protect our children.

Tell me, if they take away our guns against the constitution which gave us self defense, what are you going to do when the intruder, who bought his gun off the street (so easy to do) is undressing your three year old to rape her.

For the rest of your life, your horror at watching your little girl be raped and killed, you will hear her screams for the rest of your life and wish you had not been against guns. Well, it's too late now.

But it isn't. It's still NOW. You still have the right to bear arms. This is your second chance to save that sweet little daughter who is not yet murdered while you stand helpless. For the sake of the children, we must keep our guns.

Only "good" citizens will be unarmed.

The bad guys can purchase as many guns as they want off the streets. And they will.

Ty Nancy ... Thanks for calling on elected officials to stand against Shoot First laws in your state. Can you ask your friends and family to do the same?

“We owe our children – the most vulnerable citizens in any society – a life free from violence and fear.” ― Nelson Mandela

This petition is NOT about disarming citizens. . .

I sign this as a past victim of a violent assault and attempted rape during a home invasion and robbery by a complete stranger.

Avril, it doesn't look that way, does it?

No doubt there are instances where having a weapon would be handy, but overall it is more dangerous to have a gun than not.

"...females living with a gun in the home were 2.7 times more likely to be murdered than females with no gun at home. "

"But there is a more fundamental problem with the idea that guns actually protect the hearth and home. Guns rarely get used that way. For every instance in which a gun in the home was shot in self-defense, there were seven criminal assaults or homicides, four accidental shootings, and 11 attempted or successful suicides."

Safer without a gun.

These laws canoe possibly be constitutional since they are, in effect, a right to murder.

These laws help create the situations in which people get shot. those who feel a need to carry guns, expect that anyone else, then, may be, or is carrying as well, which pushes them to shoot in anticipation, even if they see no gun.

S & N There are too many guns in too many hands in too many places. So many already paranoid people are carrying weapons and that is dangerous for the rest of us.

How many people have to die--how many innocent people must lose their lives--before the NRA is satisfied? I guess the NRA wants us to be a country of white, gun-toting, Republican-voting men, and won't be happy until the US is remade in their image.

Forgive my sarcasm and bitterness; no one deserves to lose their life just because someone else thinks they might possibly feel threatened at some time in the next two years. (Because the other party is a different race, after all, and most of all is poor! That kind of person simply can't be allowed to walk freely.)

Nope! Having the law is good but too many never read the law so they take only what the sensational news headlines and not think past that. SYG is absolutely necessary. Many people cannot just retreat because of other factors. Most people will never be faced with a life or death situation.
But when it happens a weapon is a very good thing.

Thank you Nancy. Shoot first laws are skewed and almost always in favor of the shooter thus letting them off the hook scott free regardless if they were right or wrong.

It is amazing that there are that many cowards, racist, and fear mongers in general in Florida to push for expanding SYG laws to cover ....'feeling threatened, even by unarmed persons...that it's ok to shoot them' I'm guessing....sigh.

Noted and signed the petition; as Dandelion said..."for what it's worth''.
