Whether one regards bariatric surgery -- last-resort weight-loss operations such as gastric bypass and stomach stapling -- as an essential treatment for obesity or as a failure of the fat person's will, the fact is, it

Not really! There are other studies that have found WLS has an almost 5% risk of death within the first year and many, many complications. These studies were not that well done either. The one in Utah compared patients who has WLS with obese patients who applied for driver's licenses. The group who received WLS obviously had access to medical care (and wls patients are supposed to get yearly checkups.) Those in the general population may not have gotten the same medical care. Not to mention, how many people lie about weights on their driver's license.

The one in Sweden seemed to be a bit more well designed. But difference was VERY small. Only 28 more very obese people died than the WLS group. Considering the fact we are being scared to death by marketing about "killer obesity" it is amazing how low the mortality rate for those in the non surgery group really was!!! NOt to mention, the researchers found that many in the surgery group regained much of their weight back. But the media won't tout that aspect of the study, no money to be made that way!

For all but perhaps extremely fat people, weight loss surgery is a dangerous operation that is a result of a society with out of control fear of fat. In 100 years from now, when we realize fat is a symptom of another illness (sometimes protective) and our society was McCarthy like in its persecution of fat people, they will look at WLS almost like foot binding. What was it Einstein said about 90% of people are never able to see outside the times they live in?

This surgery is not only dangerous, but life altering. Long term studies on the effect of decreased vitamin and other essential element absorption has not been done, as yet. This surgery should be reserved for the morbidly obese ( at least 200 lbs over standard weight) only. At the moment, it is being used by too many surgeons on poor candidates to make money.

Congrats to Sora Song for the best and most thorough article about gastric bypass reducing the risk of death. For many patients, the are obstacles to getting the surgery. See a bariatric surgeon, and follow his instructions. If you are 100 lbs overweight and have failed when attempting to lose weight by diet and exercise, then you should qualify for the surgery. If your insurance company denies you after that, contact Obesity Law at www.obesitylaw.com and they will help you get the money from your insurance company.
