I Want to End Child Slavery in Haiti

Offbeat  (tags: Children, Slavery, Poverty, PLEASE SIGN THIS PETITION )

More than 200 years ago, in 1804 Haiti became the first nation in the world founded on the abolishment of slavery. Unfortunately extreme poverty and inequality forces over 300,000 children to live today enslaved as domestic servants.

How sad and shocking. Every child on this earth deserves an education and better conditions than this.
Thank you for the petition and for calling this to our attention.

noted and petition signed it's a sad thing that some children have to live this way but this isn't the only country that has this problem. What about are homless the ones that have to sleep on the streets andd prositute themseles to surive or work for praticaly nothing to surive. this goverment doesn't protect all of us. I don't mind helping other children from different countries but why can't we clean up our own backyard first?

Noted and signed, Jocelyn. Thank you.

But for an accident of birth, any of us could have been one of those children. I agree with Tammy that this is not the only problem, but there are so many problems that it is impossible to prioritize. The only thing we can do is try to do everything that we can possibly do.

To rescue even one child from slavery not only helps that child, it makes the world that tiny little bit more of a better place than it was before, which is the only reason we're here.

Sometimes referred to as bonded laborers (because of the debts owed their masters), public perception of modern slavery is often confused with reports of workers in low-wage jobs or inhumane working conditions. However, modern-day slaves differ from these workers because they are actually held in physical bondage (they are shackled, held at gunpoint, etc.).

Modern-day slaves can be found laboring as servants or concubines in Sudan, as child "carpet slaves" in India, or as cane-cutters in Haiti and southern Pakistan, to name but a few instances. According to Anti-Slavery International, the world's oldest human rights organization, there are currently over 20 million people in bondage. Thanks for bringing this to light Jocelyn. Its 2007 and we still have slavery worldwide.

Noted and signed. Such a poor country. They need a stronger economy. Is it better to be a slave and live, or die from starvation? One of the CNN heros from Florida featured raises money to deworm the children with swollen bellies who go from being tired and listless because the parasites consume 20 per cent of their food to being bright and smiling with gratitude. He spends a lot of time in Haiti and considers them his children, and he's a young guy. If only people cared more about each other, this world would be such a better place.
