Speed zones require most boats to slow to 5 mph to limit wakes and prevent collisions with manatees, but a quarter of the mammals' deaths in Brevard and statewide are the result of boat collisions, officials say.

The most effective measure to implement -- instead of replacing signs that aren't quite right -- is to restrict water surface traffic in known areas of manatee populations. Establish "red zones" not slow zones.

This may curtail recreation in some areas but, ya know, Florida is a pretty big place with lots of water areas for recreation. A bit of sacrifice on boaters and their plans but I'm sure they shouldn't mind. Right?

These peaceful creatures show the scars of their run ins with boaters who carelessly ignore all rules. They should have their boats taken from them if they hit a manatee, and pay the cost to help it recover. Sometimes the pocketbook is the only thing people pay attention to.

These peaceful creatures should be respected. People can learn to slow down and when they don't hit them in the pocket book - raise the amounts so high that they will think twice - also make them work w/the manatees who are hurt - make them pay the medical bill. Somehow people must be taught empaty. How sad.
