Ecologists Preparing for Boom in Urban Wildlife 'Invaders'

The recolonisation of British cities parallels what is happening elsewhere in Europe and also the US. American scientists warned last week that wolves, mountain lions and wild dogs could soon be a common sight in densely populated cities.

my initial reaction is "good for them, and best of luck (they'll probably need it)", but on reflection find it unlikely that reclusive, normally human-shy animals like wolves and mountain lions will make anything but "emergency raids" in heavily-settled areas. my only real reservation is that colonising species may overload resources for existing/surviving native ones.

A doe had twin fawns in our neighborhood in Chicago. Animal Care & Control didn't have enough manpower to pick them up until the doe was hit by a car.

Humans are the invaders, not the other way around. Humans overpopulate and destroy habitats for our misuse.

-Good news! Our human habitat is not yet too toxic or sterile to support other life forms.
- People, especially children, will have the opportunity to discover what is or isn't possible in sharing the earth with other species - what we and they stand to gain, or to lose.
- This is OUR responsibility as custodians of the neighborhood.

Yup Paula, I have seen the period of incredibly fast paving and destruction of wildplaces.

Those who can easily adapt do return to their homes - Coyote is quick, raccoon even quicker. Snake is killed too often. Bear has always just followed her nose when men built into her land. She does try to tech her children to be very wary, but it can all smell too inviting.
I never mentioned to Sierra neighbors that the prints in the morning snow were the local mountain lions', and for the deer who struggled in the roadside snow I often tramped a path so they wouldn't have so much difficulty getting through the plow berm.

But I don't have a jackhammer to take the sprouting freeways down.

Verbally ABUSE those using Roundup!
