Despite the fantastical scenery, talking armor-wearing polar bears and even a swarm of flying witches, "The Golden Compass" is getting more attention not for its use of fantasy, but instead for something very real: Religion.

...reaching the Magisterium – located in the alternate universe of Bolvanger – she realizes that they have been capturing children, removing their souls and preventing them from being touched by "dust," a substance that is eluded to be representative of the free will the Magisterium is trying to avoid and eliminate.

Which the church sees as itself - well that could also be seen as some governments or even the pathetic "leave no child behind" school policies now. And just like the controversy over Harry Potter, it is time for a reality check. A wake-up call to organized religions everywhere to do some self-evaluation - if they are brave enough. And as with so many things that organized religion is against...if you don't agree with abortion - don't have one....if you don't agree with the movie - don't go to it.

I agree with you Ariel H. When the church is amid scandal(such as the many sexual abuse cases among boys) it tries its hardest to cover it up. That's why I claim no religion ,I'm an infidel and proud of it!!! I will be going to see the movie with my son and daughter.

I am always amused by religious believers when their fear of the truth or a fantasy that may expose religion to a closer examination. If religion is so weak it doesn’t feel it can survive if people go to see movies like Harry Potter and The Golden Compass then maybe it is time humanity abandoned this false doctrine and began thinking for themselves.
