We are now three to five generations removed from the rural backbone that strengthened America. The world at large has undergone a similar transformation as the promise of easier work has created a migration to big cities.

I am all for self sufficiency - f nothing else it helps to make sure that your food is safer to eat.

However, self sufficiency requires you to have a place large enough to permit you to grow all or at least a large part of your food and that the location has the resources to do so. For most of us, this means we need to be able to own a home and a little bit of land. To do this, we also need a stable economy.

this is not very likely in a country of 300 million people and little resources to support such a change in lifestyle. And the knowledge gap is incredible! But change should come. Maybe it would be a better exercise if the occupy people became the "redesign America" people.

Good article and true, Tim. I teach gardening classes through the Master Gardener Program. I'm amazed at the growing number of people who are learning and producing their own foods, eating fresh, sharing with food banks, and preserving. It is healthy and feels so great.
