There are only four U.S. chlorine factories left that haven't committed to stop using mercury. They use an outdated technology to manufacture chlorine that was developed back in 1894, even though modern technology is good for the environment & business...

Thanks so much guys. Just picture it...if we stop this at the source, our waters, our fish--will once again be safe. You won't have to worry about your child getting brain damage because he/she had more then two servings of tuna in one month. I remember when the public became aware that CO2 emissions from oil refinery smokestacks were out of control, it was mandatory that they were updating with newer, cleaner technology. I don't think that it is too much to ask that the same be done for these chlorine plants, especially when faced with the alternative--mercury poisoning and death.

I apologize to all our Non-US friends. As you all know, you are no less important, and this issue effects you no less. I really see no reason that you should not be able to sign, because these fish migrate so widely that they eventually end up all over the world. Not to mention that after they are harvested, they are shipped worldwide. Also, on one final note, ocean currents are so pervasive that virtually any substance anywhere in the world will eventually end up anywhere else in the world given enough time. Granted, by that point it will be vastly diluted, but still. Just thought you should know.

Thanks, Daniel, signed! Remember the Mad Hatter in Alice in Wonderland? do you know the historical reference? Hatters in England used lots of mercury when they made hats (don't know why!) and as they were poisoned they began to display very erratic, crazy behavior. Children are so much more susceptible to heavy metals. I wonder if not just fish, but the air, soil and water polluted with mercury are the cause of the rise in autism and "hyper-active" kids.

Thank you, Daniel, for bringing forth this very important issue with a petition. I have long been concerned about the alarming rise in the level of mercury in our water systems. This has manifested itself in fish as well and I read several scientist/physician statements that encouraged pregnant women to limit their consumption of fish to no more than twice weekly. I am currently taking 3,000 mg. daily of fish oil under the direction of my physician because of very high triglycerides. I have gone along with this unwillingly and it has indeed helped but I am quite disturbed thinking that I must be loaded with mercury at this point. I appreciate your sharing this with everyone very much.

NOTED & SIGNED. I am very allergic to chlorine e.g. in swimming pools/etc. - but the irony was that when I clicked on the "Visit Site" button & it was brought up, the web "ad" that popped up alongside it was for none other than frickin' CLOROX BLEACH. Q.E.D. - "quid erat demonstrandum" - proves my point.

Big Business is still at it. After the Bush Administration permitted the fox to guard the hen houses, President Obama has a lot of corrections to make. The Republicans will try to stop him every step of the way. They don't care about us, LITTLE PEOPLE, as Big Oil described us. What's a little mercury, here and there? Don't forget, now, we average citizens are expendable. There are plenty more where we came from.

Strange that it asks for a postal code but then does allow you to enter one. I'm thinking it may be a technical glitch so I've sent them an email to ask. Will add a new comment here if they get back to me.

Let's just stop using chlorine This may seem an ignorant comment, but swimming pools are very environmentally unfriendly and so is bleach. Stop using chlorine and put them out of business.

It seems that you only care about mercury coming from Plants, what about fluoride in toothpaste and water? How about that Mercury they have in the flu shot they give you every year that brings on Alzheimer's Disease and Parkinson's Disease? Why aren't they doing anything about that? And they shots they give babies when they are born, giving them autism and asperger's syndrome? My nephew was fine until he got his shots, they he got Asperger's syndrome. This country is killing us. When you get that flu shot every year with Mercury in it it goes right to your brain!!!!!! Let's stop that instead!!!!!
