Should the person who caused this go unpunished? One count of misdemeanor cruelty is the charge, Should this person be allowed to receive Suzi back again? Even if found guilty the horses are to be returned to the owner. Protest now - ACTION!

Thank you Anthony for letting me know about this abuse. I have posted it as a news story for you - so that the animal activists at Care2 can protest the return of these two horses to their owner!

What Is Going To Happen?
If no one cares, and no one acts, this is what will happen: Keum H. Lee will be found Guilty, or found Not Guilty, of misdemeanor animal abuse. If found Guilty, she will pay a small fine. The horses will be returned to her--despite the statement of the examining equine veterinarian and the observations of the clinic veterinarians that these horses suffered, were starved, were abused--despite the documented agonies she has already inflicted on these animals: the horses will be returned to Keum H. Lee.

======================================================================================
You can make a difference. Person by person. Caring heart by caring heart, we can make a difference in the lives of these two horses.

1. Call, write, and fax the following people and politely and intelligently DEMAND:
* that the correct felony charges be brought against Keum H. Lee for her willful extreme neglect and abuse;
* that Keum H. Lee be charged on separate counts for the abuse inflicted on two different animals;
* that Keum H. Lee NOT be allowed to receive these animals back under any circumstances;
* that Keum H. Lee be required to pay for all related veterinary care provided;
* that Keum H. Lee be refused the right to care for any animals as long as she lives in the state of New York.
2. Please forward the story of Suzi and her companion, and how they have suffered and are suffering still, to everyone you know, and ask them to stand up with you in support of helping these two horses to a life of health and safety.

Noted with thanks Eureka.

I grew up about 30 minutes from Middletown. I went to college there and did 98 percent of nonfood shopping there while growing up. I wasn't aware of exactly where the Township bldg was but just printed out directions to get there. I now live about 90 minutes from there and I am going to try to get there on the 24th with my signs. I usually live too far away to get there in person to actively get involved but this one I can get to.

I have worked with horses my entire younger life and have never seen anything as brutal and sickening as this. It leaves me speechless. This needs mass attention and should be seen by all 11 million members of Care2. We need to make an impact here. If this was child abuse..............

SUE, there are only THIRTY THREE noted here.........

Maybe Care2 members can't handle the cruelty anymore? The impact of thiese pictures caused me to almost vomit. And then my heart just shattered. In a country like the USA, for it to even being considered to return these animals to this CRIMINAL b i t c h is abhorrent!!!

For this 'thing' of a human being to just receive a piddly little fine is a DISGRACE!!!!

I've seen some terrible things with dogs and cats in my travels around the townships when volunteering for veterinary clinics - one dog with both back legs gangreous, had been lying down for a month with both legs broken!!!

But I've never seen a horse(s) as bad as this. Is this another 'hick' USA town, where animal protection means nothing???? No offense to my USA friends, South Africa is full of hick towns too, and fillled with bastards who abuse animals.

Only 33 noted??? I've already sent 3 faxes. I can't email them - they are blocking South African IP addresses........

Sue, any way you can help to get more attention to this PLEASE. For the USA PETA members - please get them involved now - before the hearing!!!

Oh,god - the pictures are unbearable!
It beggars belief that there's even the slightest chance that these poor creatures could be returned to the evil clutches of that disgusting savage! How can this be - surely when someone is guilty of such horrendous cruelty, and with such graphic pictorial evidence - they would be barred from having animals!

And how on earth could it be regarded as a "misdemeanour" - something I imagine as being along the lines of naughty schoolboys putting firecrackers in letterboxes!
I sent an impassioned - but polite! - email - which so far has not been returned........

Eureka thanks for sharing this heart breaking news with us. I am stunned to know how people can live with their conscience intact after committing such a horrendous crime. Why on earth should the authorities that be return back the poor harassed animal to the owner Keum Lee after her abusive action on the poor horse. This is pure injustice I say! My heart bleeds for the poor creature who must be groaning in terrible pain.

Members of Care2 I am ever so grateful to you all for taking up the cause of these poor dumb creatures who cannot fend or protect themselves. You are all angels my dear and have certainly lived up to the spirit of Care2 in that it really cares be it for animals, humans or planet earth. Once again I thank you my friends for rendering your kind services for the cause and the plight of these suffering and voiceless animals.

However, even however much angered I may be, yet I feel that we ought to pray that Keum Lee (whoever she may be for that matter) is brought to book and will change her attitude completely in her treatment meted out towards these beautiful creatures. She will certainly reap what she sows I guess!

Just a note on how to make your voices heard. Some internet servers regard unsolicited emails as SPAM. They may even accept a few emails, tally the totals and decide that you have now sent enough and then block your IP (internet address). Therefore, for those who do have fax machines or is willing to walk the extra mile here - print the page from the link (click on the header of this news story) and then write your own STRONG comment and sign it. Then fax it - PLEASE.

I am sickened - vomitously sickened by this - and the authorities should catch a huge wake up call here. Their knee jerk response to this incredible cruelty shows that whoever they are, they are not fit for public office.... And the public should tell them exactly that.

Thank God I don't live anywhere near this piece of human scum, because so help me God,....

Why would this person want these horses back? Is she so ignorant that she feels this is the right way to treat animals? They are hardly small enough to use that old excuse about forgetting to feed the rabbit or other little critter in a hutch! I never cease to be amazed at the stupidity of the law in some of these cases. The animal is reduced to a piece of real estate to be determined in ownership but apparently not responsibility for it's welfare. Absolutely disgusting, someone needs the proverbial boot up the backside! The morons that deliberately harm a horse are sick enough but to deliberatly and wilfully neglect such a problem is almost worse!

Even if for some reason she didn't go out there and see these horses the smell alone had to have been strong and putrid. As horrible as the photos were I am so glad I don't have the ability to smell the rotten flesh. That any official would even think that this woman should ever own these horses or any animal ever again (hell they shouldn't even let birds fly over her house) is an outrage and just plain idiocy. I'd find a way to keep these horses out of her hands if I were the law. I will work my way through the email list and pray for these sweet babies.

UPDATE!!!

I went there as promised today and will be posting some pictures in my albums hopefully tomorrow of the protest group (about 30-35 of us). We got there at 11:00 with our signs and Keum H Lee was scheduled for 12 noon. The chief of police came out and told us 12 would be allowed inside the courtroom. I was lucky enough to be asked to go in. The judge had sent word out that this would be one of the first cases on the docket (probably to be rid of us) and we no sooner sat down in the courtroom and the judge adjorned the case until August 5. This is good news! There is an excellent chance that felony charges will be made and at least for now, both Suzi and Whiskey will be able to stay where they are until the judge makes her decision in August so they are safe right now and continuing to heal. The rescue group now has my information and promised to keep me up to date on how they are doing. I am already planning on returning on August 5.

Gail Costic (496)
Wednesday June 24, 2009, 2:29 pm
I should have added.....please continue the calls and emails. If Suzi and Whiskey are returned to this woman it will surely mean their death. Not only are we hoping she will never get her hands on them again but we have also asked that the judge declare she never be able to own another animal of any kind as long as she lives in New York State.

Noted Eureka with the anger Songbird expressed. I have never seen such abuse and for the life of me wonder what took so long for someone to do something! This did not happen over night! The brutal truth is these animals may be caught between a rock and a hard place because of thier situation. The owner has no business getting these animals back. Then the burning question is Who will take them so that they're not sold for slaughter.

Horses are damned because of the laws that view them without mercy nor respect for the wondrous creatures they are. This is another heart breaker to add to the many! I firmly believe that the nobel steed should be treated as the national treasure they are.

UPDATE: Here is the latest news I have received. Please keep the pressure on for the safety of Suzie and Whiskey. Thank You to all of you ~ Gail

"At this time, as previously stated, the case against Keum H. Lee is under review by the felony unit, and will go forward, from there, to presentation before a grand jury. We will keep you posted as to the progress of this review, which is expected to conclude shortly.

Keum H. Lee is currently scheduled to come before the court again on August 5. All reviews must be completed prior to that date.

The best news of all: the last x-ray taken of Suzi's wounded areas reveals no new infection tracts in the wound--an important finding. Prior to this, the infection in Suzi's facial bones was not responding to any given therapy, and if the infection continued to degrade, her prognosis was grim--the infection would very likely travel into the brain cavity. But now, at last, there is reason to be hopeful that healing has finally begun. Though the prognosis is still guarded, this finding provides good reason to be hopeful that Suzi will heal. And she is looking so much better! We will continue to be positive, and continue to hope for the best."

NEW UPDATE: I just received the following this morning!

THE FELONY UNIT DECISION

The DA's Felony Unit concluded their investigation of the case against Keum H. Lee and recommended a felony abuse charge be brought against her for the cruelties inflicted upon Suzi, a horse seized from her care in April of this year. In addition, the misdemeanor abuse charge for her neglect of the other horse in this case, Whiskey, formerly dropped, has now been reinstated.

A re-examination of this case, and a review of appropriate charges to be brought against Lee--these are things that have happened as a direct result of your phone calls, letters, and faxes. Thank you so much for seeking justice for these two horses--who have documentably suffered so greatly over the last year. Your direct involvement--your expressed outrage at the suffering these animals were forced to endure--is what made the difference between a shrug directed at Keum Lee, by the justice system, and a knockout punch in the face.

THE GRAND JURY HEARING

As is the protocol when felony charges are recommended, a Grand Jury was convened, and the evidence was produced to indict Keum Lee, and possibly her husband, for felony and misdemeanor animal abuse. However, before the grand jury could retire to render a verdict, Lee asserted her right, via her lawyer, to testify on her own behalf. A second date, was scheduled at which time Lee would speak to the Grand Jury. On that day, however, she claimed illness, and so a resolution of the charges has been delayed. The ADA has, at this time, made it quite clear: no more delays will be tolerated.

And so, we wait. At this time, however, I'm writing to ask that any among you who may be writing strongly worded or threatening letters and emails to the DA and investigators representing the DA--please, refrain. The new ADA on this case is compassionate, and totally committed to bringing felony charges to bear against Keum Lee.

A personal note to me also stated:
Hello Gail,
Thank you so much for going to the courthouse in support of these 2 horses. I will continue to forward to you the most recent updates - written for us by Linda Brink. We think that the 8/5 will be changed to the Goshen Courthouse as it looks as though felony charges may be pursued. Thanks again.

Pamela, interesting point. You know this had me thinking. What if one could agitate for a law whereby all animal and human abusers have chips implanted - to track them? Or a non-removable ankle bracelet that measures the emotional frequencies around them too. So when the register 'registers' emotional pain in anyone around them, they get an electric shock! Rad, but hell's bells, these people gave up their rights the second they harmed any sentient being. Nice thought!

NEW UPDATE: I was asked to forward this to any who are writing, emailing and/or faxing for justice for Suzi and Whiskey.

"At this time, I'm writing to ask that any among you who may be writing strongly worded or threatening letters and emails to the DA and investigators representing the DA--please, refrain. The new ADA on this case is compassionate, and totally committed to bringing felony charges to bear against Keum Lee. This is not a lip service investigation, but a thorough gathering and examination of all of the facts relating to the condition in which these two horses were found--a condition that reflected almost surreal suffering. Interviews and extensive investigation of the Lee's, and all aspects of the events leading up to the initial placement of charges, are being scrutinized and reviewed.

The ADA has been to visit with Suzi and Whiskey, as well.

Please, we asked for justice, and the pursuit of justice is exactly what we are getting in return: the investigation is proceeding full steam ahead. Although emotions always run high in cases like this, as well they should--in this case, we simply cannot complain. A great deal of work has gone into gathering the evidence that will hopefully convince a grand jury felony charges should, and must, be brought against Keum H. Lee for the crimes she is accused of committing. The ADA is aggressively pursuing the felony charge, and a conviction.

And so: we need to work with the legal system in a respectful way, at this point. We need to thank them for listening. We need to thank them for caring. And we need to thank them for taking aggressive action to achieve justice, for Suzi and Whiskey. Taking action for these two horses is sending a message, loud and clear: abuse is punishable in a way that will truly hurt those who inflict it.

The public won't stand for it. The police will react to it. The justice system will punish it. In Orange County, NY, perhaps we'll make a difference that will echo throughout the state. And beyond. A start. A first step forward. Justice for horses. Justice for all animals. For the silent victims who have waited--in nourishing fields, in filthy sheds, on chains, in dark basements, starved, beaten, abused, neglected--silent victims who have waited far too long to hear, a caring voice.

Linda Brink"

It is so important that when we take action, that we are respectful. Use venues such as we have here on Care2 posts to share and vent our full anger and disgust but we must be careful that we do not make matters worse with the legal system. Our legal system is a horrible system which more often than not, protects the guilty instead of the innocent but for now it is the only system we have and our only hope in changing it, is to push forward in ways that our system cannot shut us out. I am still waiting to hear if a rally is planned for the courthouse. Since this case will not be held at a local muncipal courthouse due to the felony charges, there may not be a rally and there is no need at this point to have a demonstation since the previous one did it's job. We now have the felony charges we wanted. A large gathering with signs may hurt us at this point more than help. I will definitely go if there is a rally. I will post an update as soon as I have any news after the court appearance. Thank you all for everything you have done to not only help Suzi and Whiskey, but also because of your efforts, things have already changed for the better in that area.

UPDATE: I have just received this update and it is extremely disturbing to me especially after the last update I received which sang the praises of the way the ADA was handling this case and the feelings that the judicial system was working hard in defense of Suzie and Whiskey. ~ Gail

(This was put together by Linda Brink, Director, Sunnyskies Bird & Animal Sanctuary, Warwick, NY)
Dear Friends of Suzi and Whisky:

It's been weeks now since Keum H. Lee last appeared at the Wallkill Courthouse. Although, surely, the case must be progressing, we have become greatly concerned by the amount of time that has passed--even since the rally. Our calls to the ADA remain unreturned.

At this very important juncture, we feel it is absolutely essential that all of those in support of justice for Suzi and Whisk once more contact the ADA and DA's office and let them know: cutting a deal with Keum H. Lee, after the suffering she has allegedly inflicted, is absolutely unacceptable.

It will be too late, after the fact, to express your outrage. The silence is--very disturbing! We all know: the law seems to change when the victims are animals. We all know: in the eyes of the law, too many times, the suffering of animals is dismissed as inconsequential. And how many times are the animals returned to the very monsters who hurt them? Too many times.

PLEASE, take a moment to once again raise your voice in support of justice for these two horses, who have been through so much. Their suffering is representative of the suffering of so many, and pursuing and enforcing felony charges, and reasonable punishment, will not only achieve justice for Suzi and Whisk, it will help so many other animals now living in despair. Horses in particular, ignored, starving in fields, wounded, in need of medical treatment caregivers see no reason to provide --this case, if properly handled, will state loud and clear: somebody does care. I care! You care! There is such a small chance of punishment, when the crime committed is abusive to animals--no matter how heinous. A positive resolution of this case can, and will, send a message to all those who shrug off their abuse: you will be prosecuted. You will be punished. Because: we care.

PLEASE, for Suzi and Whisk, make one more call,
send one more fax, write one more letter--and roar.

For justice. For animals who can only, themselves, suffer in silence.

The message: No deals for Keum H. Lee. No compromises. Only: justice. This is a felony abuse crime. If convicted, Lee deserves felony abuse punishment. For the crimes she allegedly committed against Suzi. For the crimes she allegedly committed against Whisk. Be their voices--and roar.

NEW UPDATE:

Dear Friends of Suzi and Whisk,
After considering the prosecutor's evidence, the Grand Jury has essentially thrown the book at both Keum H. Lee, and her husband, Chong S. Lee, for the suffering endured by the two horses in their care: Suzi and Whiskey.

Information now in the public domain confirms that Keum Lee has entered a Not Guilty plea to the two felony (injuring and torturing an animal) and two misdemeanor (aggravated animal abuse) charges now pending against her. The case will resume on September 16 with a conference regarding these charges, and her plea.

In addition, her husband, Chong S. Lee, has also been charged with two felony counts of injuring and torturing an animal, and two misdemeanor counts of aggravated animal abuse. Dr. Lee, a New York physician, has pled Not Guilty to his charges, as well.

For a practicing physician, one usual consequence of a felony conviction, or even a misdemeanor conviction, is the suspension of their license to practice medicine. The State Board of Professional Medical Conduct will, upon conviction, review the case and make a judgment as to whether the physician will lose the license to practice or not, and if the license is revoked, whether this action will be permanent or temporary. Early cooperation with the prosecution has the documented effect of reducing the licensing penalties. The felony and/or misdemeanor convictions do not have to be of a medical nature for the physician to have the license revoked. So: there is now a large, dark cloud on the horizon of Dr. Chong. Dr. Chong purchased Suzi and Whisk, and was the owner of record at the time charges were filed against both Keum and Chong Lee.

The case number is Orange County 00497-2009. The Lees, though separately charged, are both part of one numbered case.

Heartfelt thanks, again, go out to all of you who stood up and demanded justice for the suffering imposed upon these two horses by two cruel people. Though eminently educated and clearly enjoying a very comfortable income, they allowed, and are responsible for, the days and weeks and months of anguish endured by these two horses.

Not Guilty--they have both declared.

We will keep you posted on where things go, from here.

NEW UPDATE: This came into my personal email inbox this morning:

Thu, 01 Oct 2009

Hello Gail,

I apologize if you have not been updated recently. The case is still on going. The next date is 10/26 in Goshen - Judge Berry's Court. They were charged with 2 E Felonies and 2 Misdemeanor charges each - the husband was added to the charges at the August appearance.

The horses are doing wonderfully. We are hopeful that their fate is not in jeopardy and that they will be turned over to us at the next appearance. Right now though, all is in limbo.

Thank you for you concern regarding their well being.

NEW UPDATE FROM LINDA:

Dear Friends of Suzi and Whisk,

On October 26, yet another conference took place between Judge Berry, the Orange County ADA and the lawyers representing Keum and Chong Lee. And once again, the case has been continued--to November 23.

But folks, this is not bad news at all. There is every indication that the DA is continuing to stand strong, and has no intention of negotiating on the felony charges that have been brought against this husband and wife duo--leaving us to speculate the negotiating points, at this juncture, are focused on compelling the Lees to plead Guilty, rather than Not Guilty, in exchange for a lesser punishment--but not lesser charges. If they refuse to change their individual pleas, of course, the case will be resolved in the courts.

And there is even more heartening news, as we've learned that two Orange Country legislators, recently made aware of the horrific specifics of this case, have personally contacted the DA on behalf of Suzi and Whisk. Their message: please do not reduce the charges brought against people who have allegedly acted in such a cruel and unconscionable manner. Such abuse cannot, and will not, be tolerated in Orange County.

I'm hoping to report more fully on this aspect of the case in the next day or two.

Again, a few short months ago, Keum Lee was the only person charged for the documentably agonized suffering imposed upon these two innocent creatures--and the charge was a single misdemeanor. I continue to believe your input has made all the difference: each call, each letter, each fax. Without so many individuals standing up and expressing their outrage, Suzi and Whisk might very well, at this moment, be back in the hands of their alleged abusers. And I personally can hardly imagine a worse fate, or a more egregious miscarriage of the concept of: justice. A more twisted version of the ideal of: compassion. A decision more lacking in empathy for those creatures with who we share a planet that belongs every bit as much to them, as to us.

Thank you so very much, for caring. Your caring has, for these two horses, brought them a life tended by loving hands and hearts and minds. Because of such a resounding public outcry, I cannot imagine them ever being returned to that place from which they were taken. And just as important, the prosecution of this case at the felony level might yet make a difference for so many others who, even as this is written, suffer rather than live, each day of their wretched lives. Prisoners all, in conditions of legal torture we can, truly, hardly imagine. There is no substitute for strong animal abuse legislation and precedents established in regard to existing law. Unless enforced, any law is useless.

So--thank you.

Linda Brink

You are very welcome, Eureka. I will continue to monitor this and keep everyone posted as news becomes available. The most disturbing thing to me is how the court system procrastinates when such obvious cruelty is evident. The cases should never be allowed to drag on so long. The innocents whether they are animals, children, the elderly....whoever the innocents may be, should be the courts primary concern and justice should be swift and severe when there is no doubt whatsoever to the perpetrator's guilt. When there is doubt, absolutely there needs to be time to fully investigate so there is no miscarriage of justice but in such blatant open cruelty, the guilty should be punished severely and immediately. I am so thankful that Suzi and Whisk are now safely recovering and loved so much where they are.

So many of these cases the guilty appear to want back the animal they have abused. Surely they cannot all be relalted to Bush or Blair in in the arrogance and insensitivity department! Sadly the courts and justice system are a "Law" unto themselves surplanting God in their very personalised self interest group whilst crowing about fairplay and justice. The injustices that occur and the contempt shown for the sufferrng that brought the miscreants before the courts is contemptable in itself. The much vaunted "independance" of the judiciary has made some of its actions the subject of calls to inhibit this indepentance if it is injurious to natural justice! Between the army of high powered defence lawyers and disinterested time serving judges the victim is way down the list of priorities! There has to urgent action, which I suppose in Judicial terms is more like geological time to reform the fast tracking of dealing with the side effects of the sloth of the justice system such as animals being held till they either die or the case comes up and similarly with children and other vulnerable people that get caught up in the every so slow deliberations of courts and lawyers! These persons needs should be paramount and at least temporary decisions made in the interest of those persons which can in the interests of justice either be challenged later by the parties aor dealt with as part of the court proceedings when the instigating case is heard! In short they should punish the guilty and compensate the victim!
