The mind boggles at the brutality involved in ripping out the bull's tongue, gouging out his eyes, suffocating him with soil, causing excruciating pain to his genitals, and kicking and trampling him to his eventual death. SIGN -Petition link in comments!

I cannot believe this is happening in my own country. This is Satanistic rituals - cloaked in the 'cultural' coming of age BULLSHIT. President Zuma - if you are indeed a man of the twentieth century and if you indeed want world credibility - than outlaw this barbarity. The days of us humans still running around like savages, is long gone. Do you have a cell phone Sir? If you do - then I find it damn hard to think that you can condone this. I feel sick and I'm ashamed of my country!

As I've said before ther is no justification for animal cruelty for religious or cultural reasons SAs lack of condemnation of this Zulu savagery on the grounds of it being a cultural tradition is manifestly evil and bull killing in this sadistic way is on a par with Namibias seal clubbing and the white mans canned hunting! Shame on you South Africa your only saving grace is your Eurekas and others like her! Perhaps the Government ministers would like their genitals twisted and tongues torn out! Well at least they would not be able to tell us so many lies afterwards!

Eureka, your country is not the only one that does shocking and cruel acts towards animals, in fact I don't think there is a country on our planet that is cruelty free. Personally, I love my country but the animals always come first and I will put my country down when it comes to animal cruelty but what I am ashamed of is being part of the human race.

i live in cape town ,& it is about a year since i've seen this petition on circuit again.
but it's not just the bull kill rituals & all that - this effects individuals elsewhere- ramifications - e.g. a young man will try to psychograb you car tyres or steering wheel , or your legs , or break objects with mind powers or women's organs -everything is seen through their eyes , everything must surrender to their kill authority.
any person or animal when alive , is not safe to breathe , rejuvenate , have moisture in mouth , drink a sip of water , think , sleep etc nowadays.
& this country is the worst when it comes to getting the law passed : animals casn have equal rights status .

Oh, it's really getting to be too much to bear - all this savagery against bulls in the name of "tradition!"
No matter what they call it - it's nothing but the most monstrous sadism, pandering to the bloodlust of ignorant and inadequate young savages, how can they imagine that cowardice like this makes them "manly!"

Where were the "heroic" Zulus when their fellow South Africans were being brutalised under the apartheid regime? Keeping a very low profile no doubt, much safer to torture defenceless animals. Shaka must be turning in his grave!.

Eureka Morrison (228)
Sunday October 4, 2009, 5:54 pm
Rosemary - sorry I must protest your comment. The Zulus were working in the mines, in compounds, without their wives and children - treated like vermin for the profits of the Afrikaners.

And Shaka will not turn in his grave at all - this is an ancient Zulu custom - going all the way back to Shaka....

The world is drenched in the blood of animals. When mankind is not busy slaughtering them for food mankind is busy torturing them in the name of culture or in the name of science in vivisectionist labs.

I am sick to my stomach - the shame - Oh God - the shame.

Guys come on...We all know that diffrent cultures have weird and uneccaptable rituals to us. I dont think its right but I cant say the Zulus are horrid people. Change comes slowly look at spain and the bullfights look at us and our crappy things going on here, or look north to canada and the seals....Cultural rituals are hard to break but they will happen maybe not as fast as we want but you have to keep the pressure there on them. Yes these bulls DONT deserve this and it is horrid. To teach compassion for all animals is what we should be doing. Education and the Governments willingness to see that this is just not acceptable to the modern world anymore.....Very Outdated...

This is an appalling gesture of inhumane treatment to say the least. Eureka is right, times have changed. It’s wrong to believe that it’s ok to take a live with ones on hands, so to speak! But the Government has the choice to change the way things are and create a better way not only for the lives of animals, but a more positive outlook for the people of their own Country. I ask that they make the right decision!
Thanks Eureka!

Thank you Eureka and Gorrilly Girl for pointing our that this "tradition" goes way back to the dark ages and that white South Africans are not, and NEVER WERE, involved in any of it! It is extremely hard to change the "traditions" of savages. They keep creating new ones - like the necklacing of ANYONE who does not agree with whatever their current protest is about. ALL South Africans cannot be classified as savages or evil sadistic scum bags! SOME of us actually do work very hard to get rid of this sort of thing, but we are taking our lives in our hands by protesting@

All countries and races have their cruel and nasty bits and I would urge people to put the brain into gear before let their mouths out with blanket condemnation of an entire country etc! South Africa is but one area that suffered from the attentions of Europeans in the form of Dutch colonialists (Afrikaners/Boers) and British colonial acivities during the Boer war which included such atrocities as the invention of concentration camps by the Brits and the imprisonment of Winston Churchill by the Boers! Oh what a tangled web we weave! and of course that line comes fro a Scots poet! Atrocities committed by the Brits included burning of Boer houses and slaughter of livestock a tactic used by the US in Vietnam and elsewhere to deny the enemy sustenence from the local population. Black populations in that conflict were not even accounted for in many of the places they were killed as collateral damage by the warring whitemen! However the sins of our fathers do not justify or add moral balance to the present day torture of bulls or any other animal or human by Zulus or any other group! Bulls or any other animal have not as far as I am aware visited war on anyone although during the Boer war as many as 500 horses a day were ridden to death!

Amanda try scrolling back a bit and read my comments before tarring those of us who care about animal and human rights with the same brush as racists. You may have noticed the same colonial mentality that suppressed and abused indiginous people the world over black, brown white . yellow or whatever are the same sort of people that abuse animals as in their eyes they are the only ones that matter the rest of us are for their pleasure exploitation or use! That means they feel they can rape young girls or boys, cut roads through pristine forests, blow up mountain tops, hunt every living animal to extinction and still suppress any that get in their way regardless of race. creed or colour. Sadly these attitudes prevail despite attempts to outlaw such discrimnation by laws! 99.9% of care2 people are not racists and any that make racially motivated comments with out putting their brains in gear should think carefully why they are on care2. conversly having a go at everyone and saying care2 people are all racist is something that is clearly untrue and I would hope was something said in the heat of the moment! As I have said many times before I will criticise any and every form of abuse whoever does it and wether it be tradition, religion or cultural if it is cruel it is wrong!!!!!!!!

I have flagged all racist and foul language posts here. This issue is about the bulls - not a political scoreboard for those who have inter racial issues.

The fact is: Some Zulus are practsing this barbarity - and that makes these particular perpetrators 'savages'.
Anyone, regardless of race/culture/belief system who practises torture on animals are 'savages'. A good example are those who champion bull fights and bulls of fire torture in Spain, Portugal, France and South America. Ditto for the cowboy 'savages' who partcipate and spectate at horse rodeos - yes indeed they are 'savages'. Ditto for those in the Far East who partake in the slaughter of cats and dogs. And then I will go so far as to say DITTO for every human being who partakes of flesh eating, thereby propping up the Animal Factory Farms and Slaughterhouses where any animal if it could articulate in human langauge would plead to never have been born. DITTO for the vivisectionist labs.

SUFFICE TO SAY - THE PROTESTING OF TORTURE OF ANIMALS WILL OBVIOUSLY TARGET WHOMEVER IS GUILTY OF ABUSE - WHATEVER THEIR RACE.

BUT LET US NOT DAMN AN ENTIRE RACE BECAUSE OF THE ACTIONS OF SAVAGES WITHIN THAT RACE.

AND LET US SHOW OUR DECENCY - FOUL F WORDS DO NOT BELONG IN POSTS AT CARE2. WE MAY FEEL IT - BUT FOR DECENCY SAKE LET US NOT TYPE IT. I'M SURE THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE LENDS ITSELF TO BETTER FORMS OF EXPRESSION.

AND LET US NOT ATTEMPT TO DEFEND THE INDEFENSIBLE - ONE GOOD ACTION DOES NOT NEGATE THE BAD. EACH ACT STANDS ALONE.

We care about all creeds and colours as long as they respect each other and are genuine in their love of animals I do not believe you agree with this out dated ritual there are savages amongst us all. I am sure you are aware as angry as you are that foul language does not score points. Eureka is one of the most caring people I know of and her Love is so great for all creatures great and small. Hi Eureka.
The oh-so-heroic Zulus ALLOWED the Afrikaners to treat them like vermin. And my husband who is something of a Shakaphile told me that originally the custom was a test of courage in which the object was to simply overpower the bull without the use of weapons and present it unharmed to Shaka. Apparently he once had his warriors do the same to a full grown male hippopotamus! My comment about him turning in his grave was in reference to the cowardice of some modern representatives of the tribe he single-handedly welded into a great nation.

What made me come back to this primitive planet? Here people believe there is a hell that is a terrible place. How naive! Hell is here and many blessed people do not realize it, and what is worse, they do not want to see it. The blindness for what people might disturbing in their wonderful life makes things like this possible. Ignorance creates suffering and the knowledge that we cannot do enough creates suffering for us who would like to help.
There is no justice and if there is a god, it is not that type who interferes to help the innocent from suffering.

Off TOPIC:

No the Zulus did not allow the Afrikaners to treat them like vermin. The Afrikaners had guns and so did the Apartheid government. This poster's comments are riacist in the extreme. A thorough study of South Africa's history is called for. I can suggest some very good reading - my personal library is extensive.... So is my personal experience......

Zulus are not unique in being a supressed indigenous population. That suppression very often carried out by those of European origin. Ireland has probably more than it's fair share of similar suppression by the Brits which has spawned revolution, terrorism and dumping of people from other parts of the Brit empire. The potatoe famine ring any bells, mass poverty and starvation, rich Brit installed land owners, mass migration to the Americas. full circle with US sponsership of terrorism in NI. Or if you like what goes around comes around! However I digress and am in danger of waltzing off topic. Indiginous people never allowed themselves to by treated as vermin in any history I have read from Ireland to Native Americans, NZ Maoris, Aussie Aborigals or Africans and Indians etc etc! Like Eureka I try and check a few facts before firing up! However badly the Zulus or any groups were or are treated that is no excuse for gratuitous violence involving animal torture! Like wise with Spanish bull abuse in the name of God! If these rituals are felt absolutely neccessary then as with vivisection therwe is a perfectly good alternative, a dummy bull if they must, set light to an effigy, emasculate an image of the Government(That might be difficult as few governments have any balls!) Anyway you get the picture. If died in the wool academics and school principals can be persuaded to stop using cats etc for cruel training and testing procedures and to change to the many prosthetic and computor driven devices available to medical science then I'm sure some alternative to animal torture can be devised for this particular ritual!

No, my comments are not in the slightest racist. My people suffered for 800 years under British oppression and WE NEVER STOPPED FIGHTING IT, albeit with very limited success, even though outnumbered, outgunned and with the oppresser next door to us. Likewise Native Americans and Tasmanians who chose extinction over exploitation. And let's not forget the Maoris who outfought the highly trained British at every turn and who, if they had had the good sense to stop fighting among themselves, would have sent their oppressors whining back to England with their tails between their legs. Wonder if any of these peoples made a virtue of animal abuse?

All cultures have hung onto traditions that are horrific, and only until they were shamed or educated has change happened. Let's pray they get the message and go forth without having this ritual as part of their tradition anymore. It's all we can do really, because we all are not so innocent when it comes to how our own ancestors have come up through the ages.

Yikes, don't anyone blast me for saying that. It's just that without this medium, for us to learn all these type of practices, we'd never know. It's all about educating people about what they already know is right, but have been taught otherwise. I can't believe anyone chooses to harm an animal without knowing it's wrong, UNLESS they are selfish and sick and full of pain. As awful as this is, AT LEAST it's NOT what we usually see and read about - another teenager killing a pet cat or their dog!

I agree 100% with MyKink. Our gut always, always tell us when we do something wrong. We however choose to ignore it. Some people though don't even feel this 'gut' feeling anymore - they have been separated from their SELF to such an extent that their view of existence is that we are simply all a bunch of chemicals.

I am grateful for a site like Care2. Here we expose, we learn, we lobby, we love, we cry and quite often we rant. Many divergent opinions and honest debate. Almost without fail there will be individuals within any country/race that abuse their fellow man and./ or animals. It is my intention at Care2 to target these individuals only - never to target an entire race.

As a follow-up to this story - it was aired on a Radio Talk show - and some ANC members have now condemned this practise publicly. We can but hope it will cease and these youngsters find another method of celebtating their manhood.

Eureka, what a horrible thing for people to to do to an innocent animal!

I have signed the petition and posted the following comment with it. "Please stop these inhumane and barbaric practices of bringing pain and death to an innocent bull! Please consider that bringing unnecessary pain and suffering to an innocent bull is horrible and does not show manhood. It shows cruelty and insensativity to a feeling animal."
