Melee at Portuguese Bullfight Sparks Renewed Debate Over Religious Tradition, Animal Cruelty

Animals  (tags: bull fights, bull, animalcruelty, slaughter, animalrights )

- 54 days ago - blog.taragana.com
It was supposed to be a "bloodless bullfight," a dangerous dance between a pirouetting matador and an enraged bull that would not end in death. But this time-honored Portuguese tradition capping a religious festival was anything but bloodless.

“In the old days we used to invite the congressmen, the assemblymen, the mayors, the sheriff, all these people, but for some reason that we cannot understand, we stopped doing that,” Avila said. “So for maybe 20 years we did not connect with the political power, and we can see now that is not good.”

Guinness World Records takes a stand against bull fighting
===============================================
GWR Official Statement

It has been brought to the attention of Guinness World Records that 11-year-old Michelito Lagravere’s recent killing of six calves in a bullfight in Merida, Mexico will be submitted to Guinness World Records for recognition as a potential world record.

Guinness World Records was not aware that this event was taking place, and will not recognise the result. We do not accept records based on the killing or harming of animals.

I'm thrilled that people are challenging these cruel traditions.
Some people are threatened by change, and a fewer number are belligerent about putting aside violent endeavors, period. Such ignorance must be continually questioned - which is where our work comes in.
Thanks, Eureka !

I thank everyone who has signed all these petitions. The only way we'll ever succeed in closing down this 'sporting torture' is to continue to protest - to do it consistently - as often as we can, and not just once a year when it is bull fighting / bull lancing / bull set on fire season.

When our protests are in their faces - all the time - they cannot hide. We will not give them a place to hide.

Again, thank you everyone for your support.

Check sites and did sign all, but the bottom one to Spain, I think they let me sign that twice, #4,784. Don't understand why we don't have more signatures on these important petitions, have forwarded all except the bottom one, didn't know how to do that, but with everyone here in Care2 that says they want to make a difference and here it is a month later on some of these and still not numbers I personally would be happy to see, sad, since it isn't summer, people can't say I'm on vacation with my kids, etc...there has to be a way we can get these numbers up...don't have anymore people I can forward this to.

TY Eureka for these links. I've signed all of them, and will continue to sign as long as man in his utmost cruelty continues to slaughter, kill, maim, torture, shoot, hunt, abuse, and starve defenseless animals. You know.....all of us here have a Heart's over matter sometimes, I just get so irked and saddened, really.......at the abuse of Nature's creatures that should be left free to roam. I even see it in my neighborhood sometimes. So Sad!!!

Now I wonder what some of these affectionados of traditions involving cruelty would say if we English were to resurrect some of our nasty past traditions including dispatcing missionaries to rape the natives into submission, bear baiting, cock fighting, fox hunting, abducting people into slavery, burning witches, child labour, public hangings exhibitting the heads the executed on poles, just to mention a few of our more colourful past traditions which we have thankfully have consigned to the dustbin of history. Although there are those of our political elite that would repeal some of the laws banning such atrocities given the chance! As for some of the more racially charged remarks about Mexicans etc one should remember not all members of any particular nationality support animal cruelty and there is a significant lobby of home grown animal abusers in every country including the US and UK! Otherwise we would not be protesting attempts to repeal anti hunt legislation in the UK or wolf hunting etc in the US! Apart from that I cannot understand the stance of the Catholic or indeed any church or religion not speaking out against the abuse of God's creatures and by not speaking out one assumes they condone it! After all we are not talking about Nazi Germany where priests and ministers of religion where executed for speaking up about atrocities against the Jews.In one example being cononised (made a Saint) for exchanging places with a Jew awaiting the gas chamber at Auschwitz! That person was St Maximillian Kolbe a Franciscan friar, who is incidentally the patron Saint of radio amatuers and also political prisoners etc as he was also a well known amatuer radio pioneer in his native Poland He is remembered in Israel on the list of Righteous Gentiles. It would appear the Church is short on men of Father Kolbe's stature to speak out today against wrongdoers! Jesus would certainly not have been so reticent in this respect about the abuse of his Father's creation! This cruel tradition is but another excuse for perpetrating abuse in the name of religion and the Church should be doing penance for not condemning it outright!

Well said Chris!
What was doing catholic church in Midle Ages was beyond our imagination - whenever I see the photos from bloody fiestas where bulls (or other animals) are tortured and killed in the name of tradition it brings to my mind INQUISITION and the way they were convicting heretics.
Thanks to these fiestas we can't forget the dark side of the church's history - but does the church care?
I don't think so. Polish organisations wrote official letter to Polish Pope John Paul II asking for any intervention in the bloody fiestas but hadn't got any reply from him.
Barbarian fiestas in the name of catholic tradition - that's the absurd

All "Machos" torturing and killing animals bring the result upon themselves and well deserve it. May all Corridas end like this and Then, Maybe, all of Spain will join Barcelona and put an end to this barbaric "culture", once and for all.

This barbaric tradition has to be stopped in all countries. the article says what is the difference between a bullfight and a rodeo? Both are cruel and barbaric, the difference being animals are not slowly and cruely tortured to death in a rodeo.

this is not a religious tradition, but simply a tradtion where a matador legally tortures a bull to death, while hundreds of bloodthirsty fools cheer him on. how any human can watch this torture and pay to watch it is beyond understanding.

it shows the cruel sick attitudes of these people towards animals.

chris b. (1251)

Julie I think the comment in the article makes an assumption that we would condone the Rodeo but not the bullfight! So the writer is obviously not a Care2 person and as you say how a woman can watch let alone pay to watch this kind of barbaric medieval blood orgy is beyond my comprehension. However you will no doubt have heard of the female nursery worker in the UK in the news for sexually abusing very young children and tots in concert with another female and a man both met over the internet and now another woman has been arrested in this case!. The sickening thing about it was when the police interview tapes were shown she rufuses to name the children she abused so some of the parents have no idea if their child has been abused or not what a monster apparently she has until she is sentenced to divulge the names of the little victims!. Some females seem to have taken the equality business to extreme ends buy getting more drunk than men and being nastier than men and presumably women who attend bullfights are part of this unpleasant escalation of the ugly side of human nature!

Incidentally the Popes email adress is currrently blocked and I have not been able to find an alternative address to submit the letter to about bullfighting and religious festivals! We shall need that address to petition for Beatification of Eureka ( the level before canonisation to sainthood and has the title Blessed!) Has a nice ring about I think " Blessed Eureka of the Animals" or later "Saint Eureka of South Africa" Although she might be known by some as the patron saint of bulls!

tHERE is nothing religious about this! It's just a bunch of sick minded religious people hiding behind religon to be mean, because they can get away with it.Cruelty is cruelty,no matter who does it or for what reason and should never be legal! These people deserve their own medicine or put on a nut ward and pumped full of drugs to help their hateful hearts and mind to calm down.We don't need all these sick minded people walking free to torcher and kill in the name of religion.I thought I heard everything, but it never ends!I say enough loop holes for so called relious beliefs, they have crossed the line a very long time ago and it needs to be stopped!Jesus died for our sins, there is no need to sacafice anymore. There is no excuse for this!!!!!

I just cannot believe that they still get by with this... Come on out of the cave honey, it is a whole new world out here... These treatment of the bulls, goes beyond the boundaries of civilized behavior,.Despicable and Horrific abuse to entertain the severely limited mental capacity of the people watching.Bulls suffer unnecessarily for some sick fetish in the name of religious tradition. They should suffer damnation for eternity.

We understand that bull fighting is a tradition in their country. A stupid tradition at that.
But it is their humanity here at stake, and the lives of innocent animals’. These animals’ were created the same as man, so are we saying it is ok for us to kill man with swords or fire!
Let’s change the tradition for life….
This is devastating and unjustified cruelty! Only Individuals that feel no guilt no remorse and certainly no compassion could do something as horrific as this! Is this about control, money, sport or ALL?
it would not be so forgiving if the paws were on the other foot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks Eureka

Oh Chris, about the Pope email bouncing. On the bill board are two Pope emails. One for Italian and one for English. It appears to be the Italian one that is disabled. The mail to the 'english' address is going through.

And ha-ha, very funny comment about the beatification.... Anyone who seriously thinks it is an 'honour' must think twice. It would only mean something if one respected from whence it cometh. I have no respect for them - there is much that the Church can do - a papal bull can call the flock to account - instruct every Catholic in the world not to attend bull fights, nor to participate in them. The silence of the Church is deafening......

Well I was going to say it's a load of papal bull but the significance might get lost and people might think I was just being facetous in a subject that demands serious application Such an edict from his Holiness might indeed procure the civilisation of these miscreant Spanish citizens Bulla Tora Nil Embola, Pax Vobiscum!
