Tamira Thayne's organization, Dogs Deserve Better, bought the property in 2011. Thayne was charged in Surry County with animal cruelty in August.

Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services spokeswoman Elaine Lidholm tells The Virginian-Pilot that the agency gave Thayne permission to operate the shelter following a state veterinarian's inspection last week.

The shelter had operated without a permit since June 2011.

Lidholm says Thayne would be asked to remove herself from the shelter's operation if she's convicted.

Attorney Fred Taylor represents Thayne in the state proceedings but not in the criminal case. He says the shelter's permit and the criminal case are separate issues.

How can someone with animal cruelty charges be put in charge of an animal shelter. Lunatics!

I read about Tamira and her organization, Dog Deserve Better. She tried to help chained, neglect dogs by their owners. She and her volunteers seem to do a pretty good job on giving these dogs a better life. But by doing so, they also pissed off many owners who bought charges against her. So I am very reluctant to jump into the conclusion that she is a real animal abuser.

As they say, innocent until proven guilty. States she is charged not convicted.

Not sure if i can put link here but found this in an article from date dec 8, 2012, 3 am(must be in another time zone)
The sheriff's office has been unable to find the organization's founder, Tamira Thayne, to serve warrants for animal cruelty and inadequate care of animals.
So i am confused, when she was charged in august(waiting to go to court) and now they are trying to charge her again?

"Attorney Fred Taylor represents Thayne in the state proceedings but not in the criminal case. He says the shelter's permit and the criminal case are separate issues."

We will have to wait and see what happens in court on both issues.

Ty, Phyllis.

Noted, not much more here, but:

'Tamira Thayne, who opened the Good Newz Rehab Center for Chained and Penned Dogs in June 2011, was charged with one count of inadequate care of animals, a Class 4 misdemeanor, on Aug. 23, said Terry. A hearing on that charge is scheduled for Sept. 25 in Surry General District Court."

Sounds like she has some backers that say an ex-employee is behind the trumped up charges- I hope the truth will come out so that the shelter will be under proper care...

"Dogs Deserve Better" is the name of this abuser's organization? How appropriate! The Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services is acting very irresponsibly in issuing this woman a permit based on the shelter's appearance. Ms. Lidholm said they would revoke Ms. Thayne's permit if she's convicted of her prior abuse charges. A more responsible course of action would be to not issue the permit unless and until she's cleared of all charges.

Oh NO NO NO, Tammy Grimes? Oh I smell a rat. Tammy Grimes went to jail to save a dying German Shepherd. She is a true activist. Something is very wrong here. I do NOT believe Tammy would harm any dogs.

I suspect this is a hatchet job against Ms Thayne, who has made many enemies by speaking out against the practice of chaining dogs.

If that's not putting the fox in charge of the hen-house, I don't know what is.

I will only say that there is much more to this story than people know. I would ask that people try to reserve snap judgments until the real facts come out concerning the case. There are people who try to help animals and do what's right for them, and because of this, there will always be people who also try to discredit and eliminate animal advocates and activists.
