Indoor tanning is an incredibly popular trend currently with young teenagers and even middle-aged adults. There is plenty of warnings and information that is easily accesible and that clearly outlines the risks of indoor tanning, namely cancer. Despite

I wonder: how much does (sum of artificial + natural) sun/tanning contribute to current CANCER-EPIDEMIC ?
0.x % or 0.0x % ?

dioxin (& similar $hit) ... does not cause Cancer. If you believe numerous, e.g. Mon$ter$anto-, studies.

radionuclides ... do not cause Cancer (in the oh-so-minute quantities released by nuclear plants). If you believ the lies of the nuclear establishment.

global production=~consumption of tobacco: ~ 1 kg / head / year

Uranium-weapons unleashed by U$A: it's not only (as if this wouldn't be horrible enough!) *D*U

Planning to head to a tanning salon to beef up your bronze looks for prom and graduation or to get a head start on beach season? Think again.

A dramatic rise in skin-cancer rates among young adults is spurring health officials to shed light on the risk factors, specifically tanning salons, which women are more likely to use.

Women under 40 are hit hardest by the escalating incidence of melanoma, according to a Mayo Clinic study published in the April issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings, out today.

Researchers examined records from a decades-long database of all patient care in Olmsted County, Minn., and looked for first-time diagnoses of melanoma in patients ages 18 to 39 from 1970 to 2009. Melanoma cases increased eightfold among women in that time, fourfold among men, the authors say.

"We need to get away from the idea that skin cancer is an older person's disease," said report co-author Jerry Brewer, a dermatologist at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.

A tan, whether you get it on the beach, in a bed, or through incidental exposure, is bad news, any way you acquire it. Tans are caused by harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or tanning lamps, and if you have one, you’ve sustained skin cell damage.

No matter what you may hear at tanning salons, the cumulative damage caused by UV radiation can lead to premature skin aging (wrinkles, lax skin, brown spots, and more), as well as skin cancer. Indoor ultraviolet (UV) tanners are 74 percent more likely to develop melanoma than those who have never tanned indoors.

Thank you Jim, Signed this morning before I got to my messages. This is so important! Though I do not go to Tanning Salons they are all over and so many people use them. Sadly I did enough damage for Skin Cancer to myself growing up and staying in the sun w/o sunscreen before all of the people came out and said how much damage is done to the SKIN. Believe Me I know. Dealing with Skin Cancer!!

Two more signatures! Sadly a lot of young girls just don't think of the risks. They think it'll never happen to them and besides, they look so cool and tanned. Oy. This definitely needs more awareness. Thanks so much, Jim!

I am not signing that. The information is out there and if these people still want to risk it it is their choice. We cannot take every moron by the hand and follow them every second of their lives to stop then to do anything stupid and/or dangerous!

I can remember the days when they claimed that tanning beds were safer than laying out in the sun. They claimed that the beds did not quickly age and prune up one’s skin like the sun does.

I sincerely knew a lady who had opened a tanning salon in a community that did not open up to the idea of the beds. She closed the salon down and sold all her equipment except for one tanning bed which she kept operational in her home—I think it was kept in the garage. She had such faith in these tanning beds that she used hers REGULARLY. I worked in the same Tyson Foods, Inc. plant with her for seven years, and she was always tanned, even in the wintertime in Missouri while the rest of us were a bit pale.

She was a very pretty lady. She had a natural beauty and never wore makeup. I now wonder what she looks like after twenty years of using tanning beds; this is, if she is still using one.

It is quite improbable, that you can convince people to stop using tanning beds. They don't much worry about getting old, with a serious disease.
It's a shame.

Yes, unfortunately we learn alot after we're past the age of thinking we're invincible. I never used a tanning bed, but spent alot of time sun-bathing--the tan looked good, and old-age, wrinkles, and cancer were years down the road. If you're lucky, you'll only get the old-age and wrinkles!

On top of the very real risk of cancer, excessive tanning leads to early aging - wrinkles, dry papery skin. No, you won't make a pretty corpse.
