Aspartame is, by far, the most dangerous substance on the market that is added to foods.

Aspartame is the technical name for the brand names NutraSweet, Equal, Spoonful, and Equal-Measure. It was discovered by accident in 1965 when James Schlatter, a chemist of G.D. Searle Company, was testing an anti-ulcer drug.

What you don't know WILL hurt you. Find out the dangerous effects of artificial sweeteners to your health. Aspartame was approved for dry goods in 1981 and for carbonated beverages in 1983. It was originally approved for dry goods on July 26, 1974, but objections filed by neuroscience researcher Dr John W. Olney and Consumer attorney James Turner in August 1974 as well as investigations of G.D. Searle's research practices caused the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to put approval of aspartame on hold (December 5, 1974). In 1985, Monsanto purchased G.D. Searle and made Searle Pharmaceuticals and The NutraSweet Company separate subsidiaries.

Aspartame accounts for over 75 percent of the adverse reactions to food additives reported to the FDA. Many of these reactions are very serious including seizures and death. A few of the 90 different documented symptoms listed in the report as being caused by aspartame include: Headaches/migraines, dizziness, seizures, nausea, numbness, muscle spasms, weight gain, rashes, depression, fatigue, irritability, tachycardia, insomnia, vision problems, hearing loss, heart palpitations, breathing difficulties, anxiety attacks, slurred speech, loss of taste, tinnitus, vertigo, memory loss, and joint pain.

According to researchers and physicians studying the adverse effects of aspartame, the following chronic illnesses can be triggered or worsened by ingesting of aspartame: Brain tumors, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, chronic fatigue syndrome, parkinson's disease, alzheimer's, mental retardation, lymphoma, birth defects, fibromyalgia, and diabetes.

Aspartame is made up of three chemicals: aspartic acid, phenylalanine, and methanol. The book "Prescription for Nutritional Healing," by James and Phyllis Balch, lists aspartame under the category of "chemical poison." As you shall see, that is exactly what it is....

It looks like there are a couple of Splenda wrappers in the trash. I thought Splenda was all natural.

There was a time, around two years ago, I was thinking of switching to Splenda instead of using sugar in and on everything. To be honest, I have never bought Splenda, because I actually switched to honey. Nowadays, I used honey in my coffee and gourmet teas. And, instead of cinnamon sugar, I use honey on my toast. During a month period, I drink a lot of coffee and tea, as well as eat toast with honey quite often.

However, I remember Splenda being sold as an all natural sugar supplement. I almost switched to using it!

I luckily don't eat any form of sugar,only agave nectar=low glycemic value and sweet enought to use very little.
try to assume that all non-organic or local foods have the potential to be poisonous,also don't eat processed foods.

It has been known for years that aspartame is neurotoxic and should be avoided by anyone with neurological problems. In fact, it has been associated with false MS where the sufferer has all the symptons of MS and diagnosed as such. When the sufferer stopped drinking the diet drinks then they became "cured".

Saccharine is less dangerous but if you stuff a rat with half a pound a day then it suffered liver damage after a while. I don't have any rats and, even if I did, I wouldn't stuff it full of rubbish.

A green star to Jim Jaston for doing some additional background work. Essentially, aspartame creates an environment in your body that is similar to drinking formaldehyde, you know the liquid we store old body parts in?
I got a friend to stop using this years ago and her health improved dramatically.

Signed. Thanks, Jim! Decades ago I opened one of these packets to put into my new spouse's iced tea---the fine powdery residue that came out of the package drifted up to my nose, and I nearly choked. I could smell it for awhile afterwards, and told him that the stuff was poison & I wouldn't use it anymore. Happily using regular cane sugar ever since.

I'm already boycotting aspartame; it's only suitable for sweetening rat poison. I have no problems with sucralose, stevia, papaya extract, and right-twist sugars that don't digest easily in human systems. I consider saccharine too persistent and sodium cyclamate rather funky tasting. As I don't need diet drinks, I tend to buy occasional sodas with real sugar or corn syrup but usually just drink tap water from a re-used soda or water bottle fitted with a 'valve' top for convenience.

The thought of Aspartame makes me gag as did the first time I drank something that had this poison in it. Me and Aspartame cannot get along. Rumsfeld's the creep that got this poison on with the FDA! This chemical sugar is very dangerous.

Use honey, folks, as long as the bees are still there.
So far I have only read that saccarine and cyclamate cause infertility, but this stuff here seems to be a real killer.

I have always been suspect of "artificial" sweetners and try my best to avoid them. I will not drink diet beverages or eat anything (unless an "artificial" sweetner has been used without my knowledge) I think my reason for not using them has always been the use of the word "artificial" which doesn't lend itself to something I would consider a healthy alternative.

Signed , Jim. Aspartame & all artificial sweetneers are similiar to saccharin & that has been banned. SO now we discuss artificial sweeteners vs high fructose corn syrup. None are healthy And the food we eat has plenty of natural sweetness to it. I have started using Agave nectar for baking or if a little extra sweetness is required.

Roger, you might like stevia, a plant-based, non-GMO sweetener. It's much more intensely sweet than cane or beet sugar, so it adds few if any calories.

It's worth to look for a honey shop, to buy supreme honey, that's better than the one from the supermarket, which is sold in large quantities, but lacks quality. I usually buy honey with thyme, or honey from pine trees (very dark).

I have been off aspartame now for about 5 weeks and my neuropathy have improved so much that I rarely have any foot pain anymore. I feel great!
