A new study uses creative engineering to unravel brain mechanisms associated with one of the most fundamental subjective human feelings: self-consciousness. The research, published in the April 28 issue of the journal Neuron,

This technology just might have a lot of other great uses as well - not just in comprehending the brain, but providing therapy to people with ADD, schizophrenia, etc.

Balderdash. Leave it the 'all-is-brain boys" to try to say everything about a human being---feelings, emotions, likes, dislikes, religious or spiritual beliefs, 'self-consciousness', even out of body experiences are simply the product of neurons or chemicals in the brain. Pitiful.

I wonder if the temporary loss of circulation that occurs during a near-death experience affects the temporo-parietal junction in such a way as to explain what they experience (i.e., floating above the "death" scene, seeing a bright light, being greeted by deceased friends and relatives, etc.).

Thanks for the article, Nancy!

Agree with Kenneth.
On can not reduce everything to chemicals and numbers.
However note the point that they have found a zone which exists that perceives and records individual with reference to Space. But nobody has defined Space, they have described it.
Consciousness is beyond Mind.
Activity of the Brain is Mind.,which is like a CPU, for storing information.
Higher level is Intellect which sorts out, discriminates and adds judgements ,Right or Wrong.
Still higher level is Chitta which directs the intellect, which is determined by Dispositions that are inborn.
Note that in all these activities and whatever we do, including what i write now, i am aware and observing what i am doing.
This awareness at all levels of activity, whether physical or mental is beyond these states.
Also we are aware of dreams in Dreams and in some cases we recollect.
In these experiences we observe and and participate as well
Consciousness is a part Human activity in all human behavior ,yet beyond it.
Thank You,Nancy.

When it comes to mind vs matter... I'm just glad we're close to resolving it. Materialism cannot be right, it's no longer valid even for conventional science. Yet until now we had no real evidence of the soul or observer or whatever you wish to call it. I am a believer in the paranormal and the spiritual but not the supernatural. All that we consider "supernatural" merely follows rules science has yet to unravel. As our knowledge increases the divide between spirituality and physical science will fade and the need for religion, faith and dogma will be replaced by an accurate understanding of all aspects of the universe.

Descartes' first proof, I think therefore, I am, is the only incontrovertible evidence. All other data rests on the assumption that we are capable of perceiving meaningful data about the universe. Yet we cannot know 100% that we are not brains in a jar, or that brains even exist.

It's like Heisenberg all over again... either we exist... or the universe does... the models aren't compatible. And by we I mean the you that is perceiving this, not the body, Scientifically our bodies exist but we had no more actual proof of human self-awareness that we did for that of a rock or a video recorder. Why I am me, here and now, and not any of the other billions of things physically capable of observing the universe?

But now we've found a physical thing that affects the mind/soul/observer directly. We can even affect it ourselves. Still I want to know if this bit of neurons is somehow generating something we cannot define scientifically yet, if it "attaches" one or more of some kind of pre-existing... phenomena, or if a single such phenomena is split and shaped.

Or perhaps on the level that such things occur there is no true difference between the 3? I want more data, it's time we truly began to understand the spiritual side of the universe.
