President Barack Obama will make federal health insurance available to about 8,000 temporary wildland firefighters, a White House official said Tuesday.

Rep. Diana DeGette, D-Colo., introduced legislation Tuesday that would give the firefighters access to federal insurance benefits, but Obama's move apparently makes that unnecessary.

The White House official who confirmed Obama's decision said the president had ordered the Agriculture and Interior departments, which hire the bulk of federal firefighters, and the Office of Personnel Management to open the insurance plans to firefighters.

DeGette said she was elated by the decision.

"In recent weeks, this fight has clearly reminded all of us of what we owe to the people whose sacrifice and personal risk protect our homes, our families, and our communities," she said in a written statement.

This is what so many people realize. They think that the only people who are not covered by insurance are low life's and they have theirs but you go work for yours. Well many people are working, dangerous jobs, to protect your property and lives yet still have no health care.

I'm delighted that the petition I signed Health Insurance For Firefighters along with other petitions has moved this along very quickly. Seems nothing moves fast in with this Government anymore, but this did, and for all the correct reasons.

While I'm very happy for these men and women who risk their lives to protect lives and property, there are still many who suffer without medical coverage and are working jobs. There are States like Florida, Texas, South Carolina and Mississippi, among others, that are still not going to accept the Medicaid expansion under the Affordable Health Care Act, leaving millions who are unemployed and/or disabled without coverage.

This Country has been piece mealing coverage here and there, for these Firefighters, for the 9-11 First Responders, to some who will benefit from the Affordable Health Care Act, yet still millions go without. Until we can get a truly Universal Health Care system into our Country, and we are the only Industrialized Country in the world that doesn't have it, we will continue to have American citizens suffering without medical attention.

I do not live in the US so will not be party to funding such a plan but surely if someone is prepared to put their life at rsik for the sake of their community the least that the community can do in return is to look after that person when they need it.
