Whiteclay extension was incorporated into the Pine Ridge reservation by 2 acts of Congress, Theodore Roosevelt's executive order removing this was illegal in 1904. Illegal sale of alcohol to Pine Ridge residents started immediately upon removal of this.

In 1882 U.S. President Chester A. Arthur decreed by executive order a fifty-square-mile buffer zone in Nebraska south of the Pine Ridge Agency in South Dakota at the urging of the U.S. Indian Agent and Oglala Lakota elders, for the protection of reservation residents from illegal whiskey peddlers operating in this area.

In 1904 President Theodore Roosevelt by executive order placed 49 of the 50 square miles of the White Clay Extension into the public domain, precipitating a land grab by white settlers, without representing that the original need for the buffer zone had ceased to exist.

These acts were carried out over protests by Oglala Lakota elders, the Indian Agent and other concerned white residents of the area that the need indeed remained. Since the Whiteclay extension was incorporated into the Pine Ridge reservation by 2 acts of Congress, Theodore Roosevelt’s executive order was illegal.

Illegal sales of alcohol to Pine Ridge residents began almost immediately and continue.

Please join in signing this petition to extend the border of Pine Ridge to include the Whiteclay extension. An executive order by the president to do so would effectively make alcohol sales in Whiteclay illegal. According to former South Dakota senator James Abourezk, “President Obama could right a century of wrongs by re-establishing the buffer zone."

I know many no longer sign the Change.org petitions but I can find no other on this, please watch the video and then consider adding your name. Even if you do not wish to sign, please watch the video. Can't the United States do better than this for the people who live in such dire circumstances? They were a thriving people until the Federal Government came along and destroyed and stole almost all they had.

The photo I used, Debra White Plume is holding a sign that reads a Sober Indian is a Dangerous Indian. Meaning when the Indian sobers up they then start to educate themselves, gain clarity and ask for their rights to be honored. But if they are Kept sick, poor, and out of their minds, then the Indian issue becomes easier for the Federal Government to deal with. If they drink themselves to death the Indian problem really becomes easy to deal with, no Indians no problem; genocide complete.
Petition to President Obama Return the WhiteClay Extention Back to The Oglala

This is long overdue. That's why it's so important to keep our voices raised and echoing loudly thru the darkened valleys of greed, apathy, and ignorance. Signed/Thank you Dandelion............

You are so correct Judy C. in what you say, and I thank you for your continued efforts to make others aware of this ongoing tragedy being played out in full view, yet it is allowed to continue on. I thank those who took the time to view this video, sign petition, and to let others know of this.

For those on FB I appreciate the joining of their group on their for updated information and continued ways to help. By exposing the light upon this in a big way maybe the roaches will go running away. WhiteClay isn't a town, as the video states, it has nothing but liquor stores, it is only to rob the spirits of the poor and disenhearted Indian population.

This could be almost any Indian reservation in the United States...it is disgraceful and the country should hang its head in shame...then get up AND DO SOMETHING CONSTRUCTIVE to help them. I can remember when they were allowed to have alcohol in Montana, the report was Browning, MT got 30 bars in 30 days.

There is much sadness among the various reservations, however when it comes to Pine Ridge it is unfortunately #1 for all the wrong reasons, poverty, violence, neglect, so on and so forth. Doesn't make right what happens in other places, it needs to stop all over. This is something the President could do quickly with one stroke of a pen. One President signed a document that was really illegal to do, so another President could undo this damage. Perhaps you signed petition?
