Tor protects you it prevents somebody watching your Internet connection from learning what sites you visit, and it prevents the sites you visit from learning your physical location.

Jacob Appelbaum is an independent computer security researcher and hacker. He was employed by the University of Washington, and is a core member of the Tor project. Appelbaum is known for representing Wikileaks at the 2010 Hope conference. He has subsequently been repeatedly targeted by US law enforcement agencies, who obtained a court order for his Twitter account data, detained him 12 times at the US border after trips abroad, and seized a laptop and several mobile phones.

He appeared with Julian Assange on Episode 8 & 9 of The World Tomorrow, "Cypherpunks".

He is a contributor to Julian Assange's 2012 book Cypherpunks: Freedom and the Future of the Internet along with Andy Müller-Maguhn and Jérémie Zimmermann.

I really want to thank you for posting this. Thank YOU, Thank you.

I only go to Care2, shopping sites, and reseach papers(occaisionally recipe sites). But I absolutely detest the idea that I can't do this without someone trying to sell me something. Or is reporting my spending habits to advertisers. Or I.D. thieves trying to hack(though Norton anti phishing is pretty good) I have 12 anti-tracking programs running at the same time, and still my antivirus picks up tracking cookies. I really hate this.

But I have to read the entire site carefully before I contribute or download. I am not sure yet If I would be handing over my data to another abuser(or worse) in disguise of an activist for internet anonymity.

Tor is a sophisticated privacy tool endorsed by the Electronic Frontier Foundation and other civil liberties groups as a method for whistleblowers and human rights workers to communicate with journalists, among other uses.

But indeed, do your research.

Tor itself has much information. Here is a blog page with various information and discussions.

Noted. Thanks, Dandelion. I watched the Assange interview with Appelbaum and others and was so impressed. I'd been reading snippets about the TOR project since Occupy was in full swing, but am still not sure about using the application. Will check this out with my young adult kids, though. They seem to be the best informed, as I'm a novice by comparison.

I dont like the fact you can ask people not to track you and to post ads on your computer because of something you looked up and they DONT HAVE TO DO IT. To me thats an invasion of privacy. Another block of the constitution gone...I will look into it further also. as usual, you ROCK Dandelion!
