Republicans Don't Gut The School Lunches - Petition

Our children deserve healthy food at school, not junk food filled with salt, sugar, and empty calories. We urge you reject any attempts to roll back healthy school nutrition standards.

You read from time to time horror stories about kids having their lunches taken away from them because their parents were just a little behind on payments. How come there is never enough money to feed kids, but there is always enough money for war? On top of that, these are the people who want to deny women access to birth control and abortion. They want those babies to be born but don't care if they go hungry.

Noted & signed. TY, Dandelion! Just one of many GOP frontal assaults on the children of poverty & free appropriate public education (FAPE). As a retired teacher, I am honored to have this opportunity to sign against this systemic inequity which robs individuals of a chance to reach their human potential.

This serves the most vulnerable --- low income kids. Nutritious food so that they can learn better.

In many schools Ben they do offer an alternative meal for the vegetarians and I use "meal" loosely, it's mostly a peanut butter sandwich with some side offering a salad or fruit, if lucky both. So I agree, they could offer up a better selection.

I don't normally do so but I've been busy addressing others news and I thought, it is more than time to send out a few things I had and were backing up, then the night I was going to do it I lost power, so I just added them all in one send out.

The government started this in the 30's when enlistment was a must. During the check ups they the doctors noticed that all of them who had enlisted were deficient in nutrients that is needed. So the government came up with feeding them in school. Now they want to take it away.

Gladly signed. Great numbers of teachers say one of their biggest problems is kids showing up for school hungry. I suppose we pay for Congress members' two martini lunches! They should be ashamed for wanting to deny food to children. Thanks Dandelion.

They could roll back the portion size. I can remember being in high school and playing sports...Just not enough food for an active 16-year old to call lunch!

Sheryl G (363)

That is exactly how the American Indians feel Kathleen. They are ignored by DC but when they are remembered it usually is to steal more resources from their land, or more land, or to make conditions worse for them all. At times I think it might be better to be ignored than to be kicked a bit more if you have that mentality in DC.

So if the lunch wasn't enough when you were in High School Seth why would you suggest rolling back even more on the portion size? There is no reason hungry children can't be fed an proper amount and good quality of foods, there is always enough money to fund more missiles, battleships and even air planes that the Pentagon didn't even want.....think of all the meals that the cost of one less airplane could feed.

Very true Dandelion. We always have enough money to "arm the rebels" as McCain says. But when it comes time to feed children, care for the elderly, fund education, etc... suddenly we are just short. Interesting what they consider vital and what is expendable.

Well said, Freya. I have two boys in elementary school and help with Blessings in a Backpack, which is a program that provides meals to low income children so they can eat over the weekend. Sometimes the only meals some of these children get are at school. It is also proven that children learn better when they are not hungry. These children are the future and yet funds are continuously getting cut from the schools.

School lunches are extremely important. The children will not learn if they're hungry.

Sheryl G (363)
Monday August 25, 2014, 6:04 am
You are so correct Krista, many children only eat because of the food served at school. Hunger is a big problem here in Central Florida and it was noted that many children were in extreme hunger over the summer vacation. Private citizens, in conjunction with the County, got together to make sure that a feeding station for all children 18 and under was set up in each town. There is no paperwork or hurtles to jump over, if you show up and want to eat the child is served. The Blessings in a Backpack also is a wonderful idea and bless you for helping with that.

Asking Teapublicans to care about school children, other than those from wealthy households, is like asking Big Business to stop making profits.
